I am not sure the difference is as profound as it once was.

If a programme is filmed and broadcast in HD, and you view it on a HD box, on an HD channel through an HD TV this is the best picture you can get, but if its filmed and broadcast in HD and you view it on a non HD channel through a new SKY or Freeview box the box will do up-scaling for you, so although there is a difference it is much less profound then it once was.

Cricket, Wimbledon, Eastenders etc are all filmed in true digital HD (4k) and so even viewed through a non HD channel the picture will be much better then it was say 5 years ago.  I always struggle to notice the difference on sport, probably due to my chronic colour blindness, but something like the last couple of series of Family Guy the difference is noticeable.

I think the biggest difference is non HD filmed stuff, I get a far better picture (up-scale) from my freeview Ariel/box then I do Sky.  Remember the vast majority of stuff you view on non specialised HD channels is not actually filmed in HD so there will not actually be a difference between the two channels as your box/tv will up-scale at the same rate on both channels.

Thanks. I knew it was all hyped up bollocks.

Tom when u get the chance visit your local Currys, then u will notice the difference, just don't bring your wallet.

So the only place it looks good is in the telly shop?  Smiley

Watch a David Attenborough documentary on SD and then switch to an HD channel (on a telly that supports HD obviously).  The difference is profound.

If you don't notice the difference, then instead of Curry's, it might be worth a visit to Specsavers instead. Wink

I wanted to go to Specsavers but I couldn't find it.

tbh I don't see much difference between HD and non HD. Though as already pointed out, stuff filmed in HD originally broadcasts much better nowadays. Just take a look at older programmes   and see how blurry they look.

Never been a fan of tv shops as the picture never looks right due to all the sets sharing the same feed

If u notice the difference in Currys then its your tv that needs updating (buy a new one). Thanks for the smiley face but i thought id explain anyway.

Tom, according to the manual your TV isn't HD, it's HD Ready.

SD is 576 lines.
HD is 1080 lines.

HD Ready TVs have 720 lines so you're not likely to spot much difference.

Doesnt this change if he has a HD box which then upscales the pictures on the HD channels?

Don't think so. The TV will be downscaling from the 1080i output of the Sky/Freeview HD box to display 720p.
