Okay cool, I've registered for it now. Says it will be out near end of this month. Should I back up files etc before installing it? Just in case... or is it likely to just install over top of my current OS without losing anything?

It is likely to just install over the top without losing anything and you should back everything up beforehand. There's no point in taking the risk Smiley

Hmmm, well it seems consensus is to just sign up for Windows 10 then. One additional reason that I am sort of loath to do so though is that I have this little add-on the Windows 8 that I bought called 'startisback' - it brings back the start button on bottom left of screen and makes Windows 8 work like the older and better Windows. I presume it will no longer work on Windows 10. But then again, maybe I should not even be using this startisback thing?

funny quite how much of a farce windows 8 was.

introduce new OS tell everyone how great it is because you definitely know what you are doing. number 1 installed app was the free to use how to make it not like the new OS app, hilarious.

Decaphobiacs should be aware that microsoft are installing Windows 10 in standard update even if you haven't asked for the upgrade.  You have to disable automatic updates and change to the settings that allow you to view updates prior to installl, where you can untick the Windows 10 upgrade.

Oh I probably will, but I don't want anything inserting anywhere without my express permission.

Done the first bit, can't find the upgrade box.

I have either system or security center, but not system and security.
