Got up way too early this morning (9:30am that is) to play in the Oxford Cup L20 Rebuy main event. Made my way down to the Randolph just in time to be told that the start would be delayed by about an hour, and decided to get some breakfast instead. Eventually made my way back to the Randoph again and found my seat, but didn't know anyone else on table, most of them seemed friendly enough, though, and nobody seriously scary. Well, except for the guy that won the freezeout on the day before, perhaps, but that's another story. Anyways, two hours and a rather lengthy introduction by the MC (didn't know they had MC's for poker tournaments, I seem to learn something new every day) it finally was shuffle up and deal at around 12pm.

With the whole thing being a rebuy, I was looking forward to a crazy 90 minutes of pushing all-in with suited connectors and the similar sort of things you get to see in low buy-in rebuy events. Or maybe that's just me being a fish. Well, turns out I was all wrong: My fellow fish on the table (as in all nine of them) decided to put up some sort of Rocky Horror Show for the first two levels. It was all mid-position raise to 3xBB, fold, fold, fold, fold ... Well, so much for my action-packed rebuy period. In the whole one hour of the first two levels I got action for a single hand. Picked up Kings in mid position and try to raise them; however I throw a single 100 chip in and only say raise a tenth of a second later. The table bully starts shouting abuse (justified, but still not very nice) and it's just a call. And then he doesn't even limp in. Bugger. Well, at least the Big Blind is willing to play and min-raises me. Re-raise, re-raise and all in they go.

Thinking about it in retrospective it all makes sense. Why would someone on a rocky, rocky, rocky table raise into a wannabe bettor with anything but pocket rockets. Well, pocket rockets they were, the first card out a King and the Mr. Big Blind who chose not to rebuy history.

In level three when people finally realised that our table with a single rebuy so far clearly needed a few more chips, the action got going with plenty of random all-ins and me doubling up a few times, doubling down again and generally yoyo-ing my stack. To cut a long story short, up to 7,000 from 2,000 starting chips in the end and second in chips on the table. All good just two little worries: All the pretty rebuy-ladies were busy running around the room handing out those black 2k chips, and only our table seemed to be slightly left out. Other big worry, my last-longer-bet opponent still had chips. Well, it's a rebuy, so I suppose fair enough.

Half an hour break to go to Sainsbury's, find some healthy stuff to eat, i.e. Snickers, Coke and McVities, and then back to the card room. Found out that I don't get a prize for kicking the first guy out of the game, so there are only two options left: (a) The first one out after the rebuy period gets a free poker book or (b) pretend to be able to play poker and win the baby.

Alright, screw that, no way I can fool those guys any longer that I can actually play this game, so it's gotta be plan A. Small problem, though: By the time it's shuffle up and deal again, there is a total of a cool two players sitting on my table. For a minute we discuss making the dealing hypothetical and splitting all the other stacks on the table by three, claiming they were 'blinded out' by the time they can find their way back into the ballroom where we were playing. But then our conscience gets the better of us and it's just 'deal as fast as you've never dealt before'. Still sucks when you both get dealt semi-monsters and sit there for what seemed like hours staring down each other before folding. Well, that done (I made a cool 300 chips out of our short blinding-out session) and the other players gathering, it's back to playing proper poker again. I.e. Plan A. Next hand I get dealt 72o UTG+1. Fantastic hand to bust on and get that book. Again, though, which seems to be a bit of a pattern, things don't quite go my way: While UTG is still contemplating playing his hand and I'm getting ready to push all-in, someone stands up on the table next to me and gets a round of applause. B******. That book was meant to be mine.

OK, change of plan, 72o goes into the muck and it's pretending to play poker again for a little longer. Two hands later, my BB, I get a nice surprise. Right when I'm hesitantly moving my BB into the middle (I don't like posting blinds), the TD comes to our table and asks the BB to move. Listening to the Dire Straits at full volume on my iPod at that moment, I don't hear any of that and only realise something is going on when the dealer doesn't deal and everyone is staring at me. Erm. Pants closed? Check. Sitting on the right table? Check. Returned my cards from the last hand? Check. Spilled drink over me? Nup. OK, needs to be something else then, Dire Straits are told to shut up and iPod goes back into the pocket. Ah, move tables. Fantastic. With a big smile on my face I take my big blind back out of the pot, pack up my chips and find my new table.

Arriving on the new table the smile turns into an even bigger grin, as I'm apparently going to be the button. Fantastic, blinds at 300-600 had reached a point where they began to be painful. And there are two ladies on the table. Well, I was grinning already, so not sure if that made me even happier or not ..
Anyways, first thing on the new table is that I wonder if they've extended the rebuy period and I just didn't realise it. If my last table was rockier than a rock, this one is looser than a 54-year old h** in Bangkok. There only seems to be one kind of raising going on and that's all-in. As I can't play poker this is probably not too bad for me and maybe even +EV, which I'll confirm once I've figured what EV stands for. Anyway, a few cards into the game I get dealt pocket sevens and as all-in seems to be the standard form of communication (and as I've only got 7BBs left), it all goes in. Called by the resident shortstack (Yes, there are people with less chips than me. You just have to look really hard) and his KJo. Rivers the J and even after looking very hard I don't find anyone with less chips than me. Next hand I heroically fold pocket fours to a committed raise and re-raise all-in before me, and feel like slapping myself when the flop comes 44J. Well, nothing you can do.

However, unlike PartyPoker conspiracy theorist would probably claim now, the small stacks don't loose every coinflip by default: A few hands later and UTG+3 I pick up 99 and push all-in for my impressive 3,5BBs after a raise to 3BBs by UTG and a call by UTG+2. Asking my neighbour if I could have his sunglasses for a minute, getting the iPod back out again and standing up, trying to look intimidating all didn't help. Neither of them folded to my massive raise of 400 into the over 8k pot. But the 9 on the flop helped a lot and I was back in the game again.

At least that's what I thought until I foolishly decided to re-raise all-in with AQ against our local chip leader, who made the huge mistake of not folding his Jacks to my two over cards. The board didn't help and the rest was history.

Plan A? Failed. Plan B? Failed. Plan C? Looking over to table 12 I can see Calle with a nice stack just raking a pot. So much for the last longer bet.

OK, I managed to pretend I was a proper poker player for a good three hours, so no complaining about going out this time. I will be back next year and last an hour longer, at least that's the plan. As for the happy ending I promised somewhere up there: Not being addicted to the game in the slightest, I find myself playing a little on WillHill after a friends birthday party in the afternoon that I could attend after all. Again, another story for another time. Back to WillHill: Playing one of my high-stakes L5.50 sit-n-goes, I find myself looking at Kd8d in the small blind, make up the blinds after a few limpers and get a flop of . Check-Check-Check. Turn: . Again it's all checked round while I'm beginning to hold my breath. The guy on the button thinks for a minute and I give up holding my breath. Check. The river brings a beautiful Jack of diamonds and my very first ever Royal Flush. Yeeha. I quickly go to my options and make sure I don't auto-hide my hands anymore before betting a huge 30 chips into the 150 pot. Get a few callers and end up raking a huge 240. And suddenly I was really happy that I went out in the Oxford Cup early, chose playing on WillHill over going to the library and decided to be brave and limp with suited not-connectors.

So basically, thanks for reading the longest post ever made to say "I've made a Royal Flush. Yay.".
