A top sports man does bring prestige and respect to the country.  He/She also gives youngsters hope for the future.  Many kids grow up dreaming of achieving what their hero's have. I never once wanted to have a normal profession. It was always something like a cyclist or racing driver.  There are millions of kids who watch David Beckham and try to put themselves in his place.  This is great as it gives kids the opportunity to dream.  For that reason sports people have as much right to awards as a school teacher, doctor or medical research scientist.

Should awards be given to sports people?   Yes.   But I would prefer them to go to people who dedicate their time to helping sick animals.

Philip Green just got knighted last weekend and he is a tax exile living in Monaco!!!

A joke!!  However he gives to charity so thats his argument - but he probably gives less to charity than he would to the welfare state if he was a domicile resident!!

I agree that honours are a wate of space - they should be scrapped and there should be a new system for true heroes and proper services - not kicking a ball, singing a song etc
