What a strange piece of logic Chesney!
1) We are obliged to have VAT by EEC rules.
2) If we scrapped VAT, the Government would simply claw back the lost revenue by imposing greater or more taxes elsewhere.
The total Taxation requirement is what it is - it has to come from somewhere. How else would we subsidise the colonies?
Sure, I realise that VAT is unavoidable Tikay, but idealistically I'd obtain the equivalent revenue from a progressive area such as income tax. VAT is infamous for impinging more detrimentally on the poorer in society as they spend a higher proportion of their disposable income on consumables. Petrol is a good example of how the well off will barely notice the change in prices in proportion to their income whereas your classic working class travelling salesman will be screwed.
Why should products you buy be taxed? We are so used to it nowadays its just blindly accepted. Imho much better we eliminated the red tape of the multitude of tax regimes and had a single tax on income - check how much you earn on the graph and read off how much you owe. The bearucratic savings alone would be
immense.
'Course I am aware it would never happen...

VAT should be banned full stop.
There are no decent economic arguments for such a regressive tax.
You've just got an economist here (B.A (Hons), PhD, MBA)
very
excited. This doesn't happen too often
I'm going for a lie down for half an hour in case I decide to treat you to a quick discourse on relative elasticities of the demand for oil around the woirld.
lol. You sound like you're gonna pop.
Ok, ok, the threats of a debate on the heteroskedasticity of oil consumption patterns have scared me off...

The very last hand of the night goes to Dewi James, who finds ACES and talks Raymond O’Mahoney into calling his all-in preflop bet of 15k. “If I had AQ, I’d call!” says Dewi. Raymond calls holding pocket 66’s.
