The Midlands has loads of golf and Soccer teams and you would only be 1 hour away from Sheffield
where you can take Sheff Utd as your adopted UK football team.
That's not nice to take the mick out of an American by pretending that Sheffield Utd is a football team!
I'd echo what others have said. You want to be near to Nottingham and that'll give you access to nearby airports and you're still not far from Birmingham, and not a million miles from London. Some lovely areas around Nottingham and a pretty decent standard of living.

The reason I brought up being close to DTD is I will assume there will be more poker there on a daily basis than almost any where else. I was not impressed at all w/ the Vic in London, the casino in Birmingham was nice!!!!!!!!
I guess it would be nice to be a short taxi ride from a place I can play everyday, then when I need to travel I will need a train, a plane, or maybe a CUPCAKE!!!!
I'd go for Birmingham or Nottingham. 45mins from me :0)
Nottingham and Birmingham have good airports although Birmingham is more commercial than Nottingham.
Nottingham is more for charter flights to malaga, mallorca, spain etc but has others aswell
Poker rooms are very friendly up here in gods country
Good grief Mel, how long since you've flown out of East Mids?
Scheduled traffic in February was 165,000, Chartered 52,000.
Destinations include Jamaica, The Gambia, Kenya, Orlando, Cuba, Dominician Replublic, & Mexico. The Budget Boys do all the usual European destinations, BMI & British Airways fly from there too.

Nottingham would obviously be a good location for DTD, however I would possibly suggest being somewhere slightly nearer to London to allow you the freedom of being within easy reach of either, especially London for air travel. Be aware that the nearer to London you live the more expensive it will be. With apologies to anyone from Milton Keynes, the place looks like a concrete jungle but it would be ideal in location being about halfway between London & Nottingham, don't ask me house prices cos I ain't got a clue I was thinking more in terms of geography lol. I'm sure grandad, oops Tikay, would introduce you to the delights of British Snail or whatever they call themselves these days so a car is not so much of a necessity. As for golf I ain't got a clue but 2 certain uk individuals might be worried about a hustle so please declare you correct handicap. I doubt if this helps much but GL all the same.
The Midlands is, imo, better, served as it is by excellent Airports at East Mids & Birmingham, even Coventry.
The problem with the "halfway to London" idea is Luton Airport - truly & undoubtedly, the world''s worst Airport, in every single respect, by a country mile..
I thought that Stanstead was the present holder of that particular title....

No way - Stansted is actually quite nice, one of the best designed Terminal Buildings in the World, too, beautiful roof trusses & lots of natural light. Got it's own Light Railway, you know.
The worstest is, deffo, Luton, followed by Mombasa, Luton, YumDum International (I kid you not, that's the name of the Airport in The Gambia), Luton, Charles de Gaulle, Luton, Heathrow Terminal 3, & Luton.

i have taken many a departure through the Terminal in Luton Airport, sometimes with folks like bill or ben sat next to me, on the same plane and without delay and with excellent facilities.. That does not infer to me Luton is the worst.!
Brian can & will make his own mind up!
