Not proper gold ones, besides, it's always nice to be given it from someone else.

I don't think you need to focus on a minority sport.  With some plimsoles and whatever they've got in the lost property bin at your nearest running track you've got a decent shot at competing in the 100m if you can manage the distance without tearing a hamstring or bursting into tears for no apparent reason.
