People don't like Ashley which warps their view of him. I'm indifferent to him but as someone who goes to the Bridge a fair bit I can say he's nothing short of brilliant. His work rate, his intelligence, his speed, his going forward, his marking, his reading, his ability in the air and just all round abilities in every department make him the best in the world by a way. He was at Arsenal too.
Anyone who says he is either kidding themselves or really doesn't know too much about football.

No one is saying he doesn't have everything you say above, or that he is a fantastic left back, but best in world football??
I agree with you that he is not a very liked footballer. probably has a lot to do with what he did to Arsenal.

Lol you can't be serious!!! He was brilliant against ronaldo in 04 and 06. I am beginning to think we have found someone who has more warped views than Scottish dave about football.
Completely agree.
I cannot think of one major tournament where he or Gary Neville have been shown up by a winger.
As you know I'm a Liverpool fan & for the record I hate them both.

He's no Robbie Carlos or Zambrotta, but who is out there today at the top of their game? I think it's a fair shout tbh.
I don't really like looking internally at "our" EPL players and believing everything that is written about them as though they are the best and no other league exists but the options on the poll on the other thread tells me that he probably is the best out there right now.

Was Carlos really that good ?? He wasn't that great at defending imo

He was out of position a lot yeh (comes with his role tbh) but one on one vs wide men I thought he was good.

Him and Cole are very similar Cole a tad better at defending but doesn't score the wondergoals

I think Carlos is more than a little superior. He's stronger and quicker. 70+ goals for real, 40+ from LB - don't know exact figures. I know he quit real after a howler and did the same for Brazil after a howler (both well past his prime) but in his 10 years or so at Real I only rememer one really bad game vs Nedved when Nedved kept drifting inside for Juventus in 2003 I think.
He faced the likes of Figo, Beckham etc at their peaks and usually kept them quiet - I dont remember Beckham ever having a good game vs him when he was told to be disciplined and not rampage forward. He was world XI of the year on a few occasions too I think around the time Real won everything in sight.
Finally I think Brazil's defence in their World Cup run in 1998 and their win in 2002 was massively underrated.
