True story:

For my first birthday after getting together with my missus, she was very close to buying that numberplate for me as a present.

She was going to pay £750 or something for it and everything was agreed.

Then at the last minute the seller "did a sofa-king" and suddenly said someone else had offered £2000 and she could only buy it if she beat that price.

She told him to stick it the numberplate where the sun doesn't shine and bought me a watch instead Smiley

She only told me the story a few years later when she found out my opinion on personalised plates. I looked on the site where she was going to buy it and there it was - still for sale.

Seems like bullshitting is common trait in the personalised number plate industry!

Think it was C 8 MEL not C 4 MEL she was going to buy.

Long time ago!

I looked at ARB 3R and ARB 80Y a few years ago.  The former was up for £17k and the latter was open to offers starting at £10k.  Decided against it as the car wasn't worth half of that!

An arber who glories in having that job enough to have personalised number plates to reflect it, might just join Branson, O'Leary and Lewis on my personal most despised list!

Do people actually spend serious money on these things or is it just something someone buys and then says it's worth a lot but not much ever gets traded?  I can understand reg numbers with 2 or 3 letters/numbers being rare and worth a bit, but who really wants ARB 3R or ARB 80Y on a plate except for one or two people.
