I can understand the interest factor, to a degree, in my town/royalists etc, but the clips I saw showed hundreds of people throwing roses at the casket. A bit OTT, or simply odd?
The florists did well though.

All a bit beyond me, but I'm not mocking them, just found it all a bit surprising.
Apparently, a whole tourist industry is being built around it. In
Leicester
. Never thought the day would come when Leicester would appear in any tourism guides.

Some strange comments from those who attended on my local news programme. One said "It's a once in a lifetime thing to see a Monarch buried". Anyone told the Queen? Or will they not televise her funeral?

She will live forever, she's immortal.

One of the most interesting things about it is the service was conducted by Catholics, as of course the Church of England didn't exist in 1485 (Henry VIII came two kings later).
He was only king for two years but had a busy tenure. I think the Game of Thrones hype is helping to pique the interest of the public: warring factions, family rivalries, treachery, a king killed in battle. Only lacking dragons, direwolves and unnecessary nudity for the full house.
Shakespeare wrote a play to please Queen Elizabeth I, whose grandfather's army defeated Richard's at Bosworth Field. Richard was portrayed as an evil, hunched wretch and we were given two of the most famous lines in literature:
"Now is the winter of our discontent, made glorious summer by this son of York"
And
"A horse! A horse! My kingdom for a horse!"

He would have been a figure of fun in the late sixteenth century. And here we are, 400 years on, mourning his loss.

Arguably one of England's most influential and controversial kings.
He died almost 600 years ago and his remains were supposedly long gone, but one woman said no, he's buried in Leicester.
After years of fundraising, negotiating, nagging, cajoling and begging, she finally got her way, walked on to Leicester car park, said "Dig here" and there he was.
It's a real life fairy tale.

Crikey, how do you know all that stuff, Tal, is that what they taught you at Uni?
We were taught 3 history things at my Secondary Modern. (Think they are called "Comprehensives" these days).
1) The Romans built straight roads.
2) The Batttle of Hastings
3) The Great Fire of London.
That was it.

Really? Good Lord, never knew all that.
Guess we'd better see what they found.

I'd call it the "Princess Diana Effect" - since then people (as in the general public) have been pretty willing to feel a loss because they're told to rather than because they know the person or feel any 'real' affinity/friendship - or in many cases knowledge - of the person they're mourning.

The world's gone mad.
I'm struggling to think of anything I'd queue 4 hours for.
