Glenn Hoddle when England manager summed up Ferdinand by saying he could be the best defender if the world but just needs to work on his tackling and defending!!!

Personally i thought that was a centre half's priority!!

Notwithstanding that he is a great defender but is prone to lose focus and concentration.

For me Terry is a definite starter for england but as an arsenal fan i would admit that i think campbells performance has dropped off over the last year.  Looks a bit sluggish but a great tackler.

The problem with centre-backs is that by their very nature they are big rocks and the pace of the modern game is getting so fast that it is starting to show even the best centre halfs up.  This season, Terry, Ferdinand and Campbell have all looked culpable on many occassions.

I think that in the future, there will be a movement away from the great big oaf of a centre-half to the more mobile defender who has the pace etc.  For me Kolo Toure is a great example of this, although he is still raw and learning the game.

10 years ago you just didnt have attackers like Henry, Ronaldo, Rooney etc that can show up the best centre-backs with pace and skill

Unfortunately for England Campbell looks like he's on his last legs. I personally would play Ferdinand and King in defence, but that is very unlikely whilst the media bandwagon hypes up the Chelsea skipper. Terry is so overrated it makes me laugh, he is good, but he isn't in the same league as Ferdinand or Campbell (in his prime). I would rather have King in my Spurs team than Terry in my Spurs team, any day of the week. Terry is like an overrated Carragher.

Carragher and Terry overrated? Maybe they are, but they are doing something England defenders have been scared to do for a while.... DEFEND! They get stuck in, they do the messy stuff, they get involved!

Ferdinand is thee most naturally gifted defender I've seen since Baresi, but he is lazy!

Do I want a lazy Ferdinand or a pumped up Terry when the chips are down and the pressure is on? Hmmmmm........... Not rocket science is it?

My current Centre back pairing after Sol's performance tonight is Ferdinand/Terry.

It was so close to being an accurate and insightful post.
The first paragraph had me nodding in unequivical acquiescence.
It all went a bit pear shaped thereafter did'nt it, what happend?

"Ferdinand is the most naturally gifted"..............................I dont know what you went on to say as my cat' who was also reading the post , jumped out of the window in disgust.

Who would your centre backs be?
I think Ferdinand would get in if we played a 5-4-1.
Let rooney do it all by himself up front, and utilise the extra man by packing the defense.

Cole; Terry; Cambell(if fit); ferdinand; Neville.
I dont know why the idea of rooney on his own up front has'nt been floated about yet!

cause owen is a better goal getting inside the box

which is why rooney plays just behind owen upfront

He's going to play Ferdinand and Terry at the back

Sol Campbell looks a year past his best to me...just more fallible than he used to be, perhaps though a reflection of a leakier Arsenal defence around him.

and I think Ledley King will be earmarked for the holding midfielder/sitter in front of the back four in those games we play 4-5-1.

My cats just dragged himself back up the drain pipe and i dont think he can take another fall!
Leave it out lads, I have'nt seen anything from owen that would suggest he retains anything other than his pace these days.
If anything i think owen partnering rooney is encumbering and works to the detriment of England.
It seemed that after the world cup 98 owen was marked out of a lot of games, something from which i think he never fully recovered.
Please note: cat is perched precariously on window ledge. respond wisely Cheesy
