Vicky Coren Mitchell on FOBTs

The average national wage is about £25,000. How many times, over a year, do you think £1,000 or more was lost in a single gambling session, on a local high street, in these circumstances?

No. You’re wrong.

It was 233,071 times.

I mean, for fuck’s sake.

That means that once a fortnight  in each LBO someone loses a thousand.

Is that really so shocking?

No, but I think the point is those numbers are based on those mahcines only.  I could be wrong.  But when I'm in the bookies it's normally the poorest people doing chunks in these machines, tey genuninley believe they have a chance of winning.

I'm not same the poorest people are the ones losing a bag a session and I don't think the article is either.

There is no doubt though that the people who fair worse out of these machines are the poorest and les educated.  When they first hit the shots they were riddled with bugs and you used to be able to take advantage of them but that is no longer the case.

Plus more games have been added over the years to cater for more gamblers.

I'd like to see gambling taxed to the maxo and go back to the days where you couldn't see the losers in a betting shop..I find it quite upsetting

To me the problem is not that FOBT's are available and you can gamble on them (personal freedom is to be valued highly).  They should be allowed imo but it is more the licencing question.

Is it fair that high street bookmakers are operating under a "bookmaking" licence yet well over 80% of their annual turnover is on these machines and casino games? (Coral accounts from a couple of years ago).  Clearly that is a bit of a fraud.  They should have to apply for, and be compliant with, a full casino licence - if they are just offering a high street casino.  If they want to operate under a "bookmaker" licence with the looser regulations that brings then the majority of their business should be bookmaking.
