Capital Gains! GUKPT Leg 2 Comes to Grosvenor Victoria Casino 9th-20th March

The second leg of the 2011 Grosvenor UK Poker Tour is about to land in London, featuring a bumper £1,500 Main Event with side events to match.  Always one of the most popular stops on the tour, the Grosvenor Victoria will welcome up to 200 players per start day for the Main Event (plus alternates for the first three levels).  Last year this leg boasted a prize pool of nearly half a million pounds, and 2010 Champion Cuong Tran walked away with the trophy and £127,800.

This year changes to the side events bring in the popular £250 Short Handed Freezeout (15th March) and £200 Dealer’s Choice Event (19th March), as well as a one-off £300 Bounty Freezeout to end the festival with a bang.  Please visit the Events tab on the GUKPT website for full information on structure, clock etc. for each event.

Satellites are running online as well as live at the Vic.  In addition to the regular ten-seat-guaranteed Re-buy Super Satellite on the 9th March, there will be two chances to win entry to the Main Event via £250 Freezeouts on the 16th and 17th March.

The Main Event

Thursday 17th March     £1,500 + £90 NL Hold'em Main Event Day 1a  12pm (3 days)

Champion of Champions – Leg 2

The London leg of the GUKPT has a Champion of Champions freeroll to match the heftier size of its Main Event – a £15,000 tournament held online on Wednesday 23rd March at 7:30pm.  Winners of all events (excluding satellites), the first player to be eliminated from each starting day of the Main Event, and the Lucky Draw (Table 5 Seat 5) in the Main Event will all gain entry to one of the best freerolls of the year.  The holder of the best hand shown down in each event will also receive Wild Card entry.

Is the dealers choice actually that or is there a selection you have to pick from?

This could be viewed as a little churlish when they already add money, give you free food and drink and let you buy in online without a reg fee.

they add money to the prizepool to the tournament? or they add money in a roundabout way with freerolls/leaderboards/first player to be eliminated/lucky draw/etc etc

free food is meh pretty much everywhere outside of vic where its ok. i would not complain if there was no food at any gukpt.

buy in online without reg fee is a great idea which should be commended

the gukpt is so badly organised in my opinion and come up with the most stupid gimmicks. they should talk to poker players about what they would like to see happening. whilst the ukipt goes from strength to strength the gukpt seems to becoming a joke. i am all for competition and as much choice as possible but stars are now in a different league and will have to look to alternative venues other than G casinos to host their events. the competition for gukpt will soon be dtd's monte carlo events that will become  more regular as soon as nick / simon suss this out. the mid level buy in market from £300-£1500 is becoming saturated and despite the good work done by stu rutter and jaffa cake i can only see it ending in tears for grosvenor

To be fair, it's easy to be streets ahead when you are funded by a company that makes $1.6bn profit a year, doesn't care if they make any money out of the tour as it is basically an advert, doesn't mind spending a load of money on bloggers and video coverage since it's basically an advert, and has a phalanx of famous UK poker names on your books you can demand to show up at a moments notice.

It was announced yesterday that Jeff Leigh of the Vic is to become the GUKPT Tour Manager. Don't think this is embargoed. Too late if it is!

Probably good news. I've felt the tour has suffered, when I have witnessed it in operation, from the "too many cooks" syndrome since Jon Raab left...lots of people making decisions and no real cohesive strategy on the day. Manchester suffered from this. London though has been run like clockwork from what I have seen

Good luck to Mr leigh

Top Praz Goes Back to Hit Squad: Praz Bansi Wins GUKPT London and £101,020

Praz Bansi, the London-based professional player has bookended the entire GUKPT by both taking down the most recent event and being the first ever Main Event winner in the first season of the Tour in Bolton back in 2007.  This outstanding achievement has been interspersed with a couple of World Series of Poker bracelets and a score of other international cashes.  This March, in style which made the Hit Squad proud, a combination of good timing, experience and a never-relinquished chip lead gave him his second title in record time.

He faced tough opposition at London’s Victoria Casino from fellow Hit Squad member Karl Mahrenholz, as well as Jeff Kimber, Jamie Roberts and Ken Wong, not to mention the tough German runner-up Manig Loeser.  After three long days, however, Bansi lifted the trophy and in his usual understated style said that it was a pleasure to win his second GUKPT Main Event and that he had run well against his final table opponents.

The 245-strong field generated a prize pool of £367,500, giving the title-winner a payday of £101,020 for overcoming one of the toughest fields on the GUKPT circuit.  The £1,500 buy-in and slow structure attracted a host of top UK players (and a smattering of international travellers) alongside those who’d fought their way in via one of many live and online satellites held at the Vic and gcasino.com in the preceding days.

In fact, the two winners of the GUKPT 2011 ‘Shoal Survivor’ prizes for Leg 2 (one each for the longest lasting satellite qualifier into the Main Event (live and online)) both made the final table and took home hefty sums for their performance here in London.  GUKPT sponsored player Jeff Kimber, breaking the record for number of final table appearances on the GUKPT with this, his sixth, was the online Shoal Survivor, while third place finisher Gary Lindsay was the live version.  Both receive £1,500 GUKPT Packages which buy them more live tournaments from a choice of legs around the country.
