After wandering past the Brighton Fishing Museum, up and down the pier, through some parks in town I then remembered the machinary topic.  I also remembered that back at the museum there was some old machinary.  So back I went.

There was a box about 2m3 and in the bottom of it was this.  Now I would imagine that this motor was used to drive the belt to turn the next wheel on the left which in turn turned the drive belt you can just see on the far left going up.

I assumed this must be some sort of winch at first.

There were a couple more similar looking machines exposed on the beach.

I guessed in the end they must have pulled up ship anchors, does that seem like a reasonable guess?

Or Brighton folk take their mangling very very seriously.

The winches were for pulling fishing boats up the beach, they would have been in sheds when they were in use.

Hastings still has a beach based fishing fleet, I might try and find a non-rusty version of the same apparatus.

Geo

I counted over half a dozen working winches - I think the tractors are for the one's who don't have a winch.

The lifeboat is launched and recovered using a tractor for example.

Logically you might want to do work on your boat above the high water mark, in which case you could use a tractor to move it back down afterwards - but don't know that for sure.
