Title: Do you Know where this is? Post by: Tonji on May 18, 2006, 06:01:39 PM I need to find out where this place is. This may seem like a strange request, but I buy & sell photographs for a living. I’ve been researching this all day, but with no luck. Its an old photograph, taken in the 1890s, showing a distinctive building, with a clock tower in the centre. Its part of a collection of old photographs from a family that had lived in South America, that’s all the information & clues I have. My guess is that it is from a British Colonial Country, possibly in the Caribeann Anyone recognise it? Any ideas? Tonji. [attachment deleted by admin] Title: Re: Do you Know where this is? Title: Re: Do you Know where this is? Post by: rivered on May 18, 2006, 06:25:32 PM Looks like Barnsley market. :D Have you tried e-mailing all the caribbean island's official '.org' sites yet? - attach the photo and you're away - those guys do anything to promote tourism so just make a story up about why you want to know where it is and how much you want to visit it.... Title: Re: Do you Know where this is? Post by: bolt pp on May 18, 2006, 06:27:27 PM it looks like a little tiny model made of matchsticks with little wooden peole.
You sure it isnt? Title: Re: Do you Know where this is? Post by: mex on May 18, 2006, 07:21:21 PM try googling train station clock towers
Title: Re: Do you Know where this is? Post by: madasahatstand on May 18, 2006, 07:45:51 PM its has the look of a or factory of sorts. there a big covered market in dublin similar. at first glance i thought it was a railway station with all the carts ready to fetch the haulage. other observations is that the people are all black, some with suits and others carrying things on their heads so you go workers and managers in the same place moving around. im still thinking a place where people travel to and from?
good luck with your quest mad on 2nd thoughts none of them have luggage so a market is likely or even a factory Title: Re: Do you Know where this is? Post by: Tonji on May 18, 2006, 08:00:48 PM mad, like that it might be a market or factory, thats a lead...

Post by: Tonji on May 18, 2006, 08:08:30 PM try googling train station clock towers thanks mex, i've been googling all afternoon with no luck. Title: Re: Do you Know where this is? Post by: Sark79 on May 18, 2006, 08:12:07 PM This is driving me mad. I have searched through loads of internet sites .
I found some similar styles in some of these sites http://www.google.co.uk/search?hl=en&q=designs+of+clock+towers&meta= If we can identify the style of clock tower. The we can find out the countries where that style is commonly used or what country the engineer comes from. I thought Jamaica to begin with. I had a look round South Amercian cities as well. I know it looks like the Carribean, but the slave trade also took in Portugal, Spain , France as well as the UK. So it could be somewhere in a South American such as Brazil. Slavery was vital to the economy there because of the minning of minerals and farming. However, like you, I still think it is the Carribean though. But it is best no to rule other places out. I have taken a print out and I will take it to Uni tommorow. My US history teacher might know where it is. He is a switched on guy. He looks like Gordon Burns from the Krypton Factor. :D. He is commonly known as the Krypton Factor man. Title: Re: Do you Know where this is? Post by: Tonji on May 18, 2006, 08:16:24 PM here's another photograph from the collection, it showing a crowded street, the people look to me Carribean, or South American. Its from the same period as the other, the paper & tones match.
What do you think? [attachment deleted by admin] Title: Re: Do you Know where this is? Post by: Sark79 on May 18, 2006, 08:18:42 PM Yea I think you are right. It is Caribbean, rather than South American.
What kind of pylons are they? Title: Re: Do you Know where this is? Post by: lazaroonie on May 18, 2006, 08:25:05 PM i do not believe this to be south america. to be honest it looks more like southern states usa to me - I can see electricity pylons, if you are sure this is around 1890 ?
Title: Re: Do you Know where this is? Post by: Tonji on May 18, 2006, 08:26:50 PM Thanks Sark,
Yes you are right about the slavery connection. In the late 19th Century the importance & value of hardwood timber, meant Europeans headed off to Brazil & other South American countries to make fortunes, & they used the local people as cheap labour, & treated them as slaves. I've tried clocks-towers-south america & other variations on google image & no match. Title: Re: Do you Know where this is? Post by: Sark79 on May 18, 2006, 08:27:09 PM I found a clock tower earlier in Mississippi that looked similar. We may be getting somewhere :D. It could be the Caribbean, South of American or the USA...lol .
Title: Re: Do you Know where this is? Post by: Tonji on May 18, 2006, 08:34:29 PM yes laz, i've considered that, in fact it was my first thought that it's in the southern states, but a friend of mine in the USA teaches American History, & her opinion was that its not America (she explained why in a long email), so i've been following other leads.
thanks laz. keep any thoughts coming. Title: Re: Do you Know where this is? Post by: Sark79 on May 18, 2006, 08:47:31 PM ok, in one of the pics ( the first one of the clock ) in the far left. There seems to be a car or something that looks like a car. Maybe a Model-T. This might just be my eyes playing tricks with me :D. In this case, it may be slightly later around 1918 ish, and America.
In the other pic. There are palm trees ( Florida or the Caribbean, West Indies ). There is a telephone pylon and an electricity pylon ( probably the southern US ) . Post by: Sark79 on May 18, 2006, 10:46:40 PM Yea you could be right Trace. We will add it to the growing list :D.

Title: Re: Do you Know where this is? Post by: Tonji on May 20, 2006, 12:15:30 PM Latest Update: I've contacted The National Library of Guyana, to propose that they may wish to acquire this collection for there Photographic Collections. Waiting to hear back, but the normal response will be "would I like to donate the collection", but as a business this is not an option. I'll see what happens.
For those interested here's a photograph of one of the Plantation houses, its in the Demerara region of Guyana (nice place). I've not been able to find out alot more about the history of this, other than its probably a Sugar Plantation between 1890-1910. Alot further research could be done, but my times limited. Time to move on to the next project. Tonji. [attachment deleted by admin] Title: Re: Do you Know where this is? Post by: MrMojoRisin on May 25, 2006, 04:55:25 PM Waw.... what an interesting job! Just as a long shot, have you or anyone else ever seen a building like this before? Nope never seen that before, but it certainly looks an interesting building. Is it in Wales, it looks like it gots some form of agricultural use? Yes it is in Wales, and yes we believe it was designed for agricultural use. I have searched the web far and wide to try and work out it's history but haven't found another one like it so we were wondering where the idea came from. Surely it's not the only one in the world. Yip, Dewi, it is also called Ty-Rownd. Surprising the things you can find out on a poker forum!!! Title: Re: Do you Know where this is? Post by: Rod Paradise on May 25, 2006, 05:42:00 PM Just as a long shot, have you or anyone else ever seen a building like this before? I thought oast house when I saw it - but I'm not sure if it's a bit small (although for a small brewery/hops producer it could do the job). Furnace on ground floor, hops on first floor to dry them for beer making. Exactly where is it MojoRisin? That might help. Title: Re: Do you Know where this is? Post by: MrMojoRisin on May 26, 2006, 09:53:04 AM It’s in the Swansea valley in South Wales. We think that it was designed to keep livestock in the outer parts of the building and feed inside ‘tower’. We think it was a cow shed or a place to house the horses working on the near by canal. There isn’t much recorded about this particular building as we’ve searched extensively but was just wondering if anyone had seen something similar. Some people think that the idea came from America but we haven’t found any building like it over there either. We were hoping if we could find a similar building we could trace who may have built it.
Title: Re: Do you Know where this is? Post by: Tonji on May 26, 2006, 01:00:11 PM I've never seen another building with that same double circle plan. Do you know how old it is? Is it on Estate land? If it is, its possible to trace its use from Estate records or maps.

I presume this is the same one as Dewi's but it has more of the history of it Daryl Edwards of Barmouth Regarding the round house, my (late) grandmother Mrs Blodwen Davies was born in Ty Gwyn, (Davy Jones locker) in 1911. They owned one half of the round house, when it was decommissioned as a lock-up. They kept chickens and rabbits in there. Title: Re: Do you Know where this is?
