I need to find out where this place is.

This may seem like a strange request, but I buy & sell photographs for a living. I’ve been researching this all day, but with no luck.

Its an old photograph, taken in the 1890s, showing a distinctive building, with a clock tower in the centre.

Its part of a collection of old photographs from a family that had lived in South America, that’s all the information & clues I have. My guess is that it is from a British Colonial Country, possibly in the Caribeann

Anyone recognise it? Any ideas?

Tonji.

Have you tried e-mailing all the caribbean island's official '.org' sites yet? - attach the photo and you're away - those guys do anything to promote tourism so just make a story up about why you want to know where it is and how much you want to visit it....

its has the look of a  or factory of sorts. there a big covered market in dublin similar. at first glance i thought it was a railway station with all the carts ready to fetch the haulage. other observations is that the people are all black, some with suits and others carrying things on their heads so you go workers and managers in the same place moving around. im still thinking a place where people travel to and from?

good luck with your quest

mad

on 2nd thoughts none of them have luggage so a market is likely or even a factory

This is driving me mad.  I have searched through loads of internet sites .

I found some similar styles in some of these sites

http://www.google.co.uk/search?hl=en&q=designs+of+clock+towers&meta=

If we can identify the style of clock tower. The we can find out the countries where that style is commonly used or what country the engineer comes from.  I thought Jamaica to begin with.

I had a look round South Amercian cities as well.  I know it looks like the Carribean, but the slave trade also took in Portugal, Spain , France  as well as the UK. So it could be somewhere in a South American such as Brazil. Slavery was vital to the economy there because of the minning of minerals and farming.

However, like you, I still think it is the Carribean though. But it is best no to rule other places out.

I have taken a print out and I will take it to Uni tommorow. My US history teacher might know where it is. He is a switched on guy. He looks like Gordon Burns from the Krypton Factor.  Cheesy. He is commonly known as the Krypton Factor man.

here's another photograph from the collection, it showing a crowded street, the people look to me Carribean, or South American. Its from the same period as the other, the paper & tones match.

What do you think?

Yea I think you are right. It is Caribbean, rather than South American.

What kind of pylons are they?
