Title: European Championships, 5k main Event, Live Update - DAY ONE
Post by: tikay on August 05, 2005, 08:45:49 PM

OK, we are almost ready.

Jen was last seen hob-nobbing with Paul Magriel, Robert HM is gonna help Jen for a few hours this evening, until I, errr, you know, "become available"......

Hello!  The players are taking their seats (I have been told there are 117 runners although this will be confirmed).  Just sent Tikay downstairs as there's that "Disqualification if not in seat at beginning of first hand" chestnut to be avoided.

Not started yet - I have heard tell that there is a list of players on a wall somewhere. Going to pick out a few to give you some idea of the field.

On Tikay's table is the Camel, whom he is determined not to allow to run over them all... so he says.

OK heres a Question for Tikay/Jen If you miss the start and get disqualified, im sure you get youer money back... as its a 5k comp, what is to stop an internet qualifier who got in on the cheap, from deliberately missing the start and copping a 5k pay day ?

I guess if it was an internet qualifier, the money would be returned to the poker site that he/she qualified for and they would probably keep it, very much doubt he/she would walk away with the cash

Sorry for the delay - the players are spread over three rooms - the card room, upstairs card room, and downstairs bar, so there's a little bit of a delay as we run back and forth.

Robert HM in his mastery of technology created a spreadsheet clearly laying out the prize structure. I hereby cut 'n' paste it from notepad for you:
1st   240,000
   2nd   121730
   3rd   69090
   4th   39480
   5th   26320
   6th   23030
   7th   19740
   8th   16450
   9th   13160
   10th   6,000
   11th   5,000
   12th   5,000

Jen could you keep an eye out for the Irish players? I believe there are a few there. Stephen Dunphy and Paul Leckey should be there (probably both wearing Irish Poker Team shirts) and Peter Roche may be there.

thanks

Mike

No sign of Stephen Dunphy on my list, which also has a Lekich but no Leckey.  Not definitive though - will look out for the logo.

Lucy Rokach was just in the process of winning a satellite into this event when I arrived - she went straight from that table to the start of this one. She is just impressive.

Jonathan Rabb reports from Tableside at Tikay's table that someone threw a purple 5000 chip in with a 100 thinking he was calling a bet of 200. They allowed him to retrieve his chip. He looked relieved.

People are being most helpful here - TWO copies of that player list made their way into my little computer corner, just inside the velvet rope at the edge of the upstairs poker room. They have covered the back wall in a huge European Poker Championships banner, just so we remember what's going on. The people playing blackjack directly behind me don't seem in the slightest bit interested.

Starting chips 10k, blinds at 25 - 50, 90 min clock

Tikay "not looking happy" according to my scout Robert HM - holding up, when queried, three fingers, then five.  This May signify 3500 in chips, which would explain it.

Stuart Nash is sat next to Tony G; I am sat behind Simon Trumper.

Hi Robert HM here, too lazy to log out and in again. No, special names from the States though Doyle Brunson is in the UK, he was at the Billingsgate Comp but I think knocked out yesterday, you would have thought he could have popped in here.

Doh... in best Homer style. I didn't read the list I gave Jen, just going on who I can see. There are 3 areas of tables and some are inaccessable, having said that he is about 20 feet away...... he's a small bloke and easily missed ::)

Back to my earlier question (see page1 of this thread)  The online sites register you by your own name, when you get a draw, they pay YOU, not the internet site that you qualified from.

So it seems i have answered my own question ... there is nothing to stop an online qualifier, or indeed a sattelite qualifier from missing the start and getting a full 5k refund.

Carlo Citrone     13,200
Simon Nowab     7,000
Joanne Liu      12,500

Liam Flood      10,000
Tikay          7,000 (not as devastated as earlier reported)
The Camel      11,600

David Benyamine  12,125
Paul Testud      7,125
Womble         9,600 (one hand played, apparently)

Simon Trumper has 10,600, according to Robert HM who is a chip count natural. I foresee less wandering for myself than usual tonight....

Imraan Ladak whom we met in Paris told me that he was dealt pocket Jacks for the first three consecutive hands. He lost the first one and won the other two, but was coming out for a cigarette after that. Player quote "very strange."

Break over (they only got enough time to get halfway to the bathroom).

Story from Tikay - Sir Clive Sinclair holding A5 was up against a player with AQ. The flop came A high, Clive bet 1,000, was raised to 3,000, called. The turn was a rag, and Cllive checked and then flat called the 2,000 bet. On the river he called again and their Aces and kickers decided the hand. Odd.

Yes hotdog, he's still there but I am up here. Within ten minutes. (Couldn't see his chips when I was there and he was in a hand)...

Post by: Djinn on August 05, 2005, 11:19:48 PM
Robert just went to check on Mr. Wernick and stumbled across a very big hand...

Micky Wernick turns over a pair of queens to show a set on the river, winning a big pot. So big that he was still stacking it when he was asked for a count - he is on just over 15,000.

The guy who lost to that set then gets all-in preflop the VERY NEXT hand, against Lawrence Gosney. Guy actually has QQ this time, which beat Lawrence's A5 suited to send him OUT.

Out before him was Bambos, and there are a few other early exits.

Here's a hand just told to me by Simon Trumper:
Simon in the Big Blind. There is a raise to 500 and Martin De Knijff flat calls, Simon raises to 2100 and original raiser folds, Martin calls . Flop is 10 high, i.e. rags. Simon bets 7000 and Martin folds and shows Jacks!.... Simon shows his Queens. An inspired fold perhaps.

I think that for this years WSOP in vegas anyone who qualified via the internet had the payment sent direct from the poker site to the WSOP so i assume that if you pull out then the payment would get sent back to the poker company, of course if you won it then you would get the money. I hope i make some sense! :)

Jen back - here are some counts:

Firstly, the chip leader, ahead by a mile and a half is on Tikay's table, a gentleman by the name of Henry Nowakowski, who according to Tony is "hitting everything."

Probably close to the top of the next tier is El Blondie with 21,300

Also:
Carlo Citrone     9,400
Micky Wernick   18,000 (asked if he wanted to comment for you guys online, he said "I'll just bok myself and be out in five minutes.")
John Gale       8,000
Simon Nowab    4,725
Liam Flood      11,500
Lucy Rokach    11,025
Keith Hawkins   12,000
Tikay          6,000
John Shoreman   9,000
David Benyamine 16,000
Paul Testud     15,000
Greg Amoils     12,150

Ironside - no Maclean on the players list, nor Simon Zack. Will do the others for you in a couple of minutes.

No Ben Grundy on my list either I'm afraid, but I may have just missed him and will look anyway - you sure he's here?

Channing hadn't really got going when I spoke to him last, but just heading over there to get some fresh counts so I'll let you know what he lets me know.

Rob Yong says hello to Louise - "Good job I'm better in bed than I am at poker - I last longer" Sitting on just 3,000 at the moment, after a full house vs full house in which he came out on the wrong side.

Players on one of those super-short breaks at the moment

They have definitely broken a table. I know this because I counted Greg Amoils' chips downstairs, and there he is upstairs right in front of me. This means that there are nine players at least out, with some very short stacks floating about.

Freddy Deeb    9,000
Simon Trumper 16,000
Imraan Ladak    5,840
Mike Magee    17,500
Greg Amoils    12,000
Neil Channing   1,950
Womble      11,075
Achilleas Kallakis 17,000
Burnley John   18,725
Peter Roche   12,000

Jonathan Rabb reports no sign of Gareth Jones but still working on it - when they break the other table in the main card room it will be easier to spot everybody. There is a G Jones on the list, though.

After the break, Rob Yong almost instantly doubled up and is now on a more comfortable 6k.

Tikay story from Robert (this is great, sitting here having tea while all the action is followed on my bahalf...)

On a flop of 10d Kd 4s with threeway preflop action, Matey 1 goes all-in for his last few thousand. Tikay dwells and then passes, having committed 1000 into the pot. Robert happens to see a K as his hand is mucked...
Matey 2 calls the all-in guy and shows top two pair vs. all-in guy's flush draw. The flush doesn't come and someone else is eliminated from that table of doom. Hopefully they'll be moved up here in a minute where I can keep a closer eye on them - sounds like there's more action downstairs.... air must be thin up here or something.

Tikay has been moved up here onto Burnley John and Peter Roche's table, with his 4,500 in chips...

He recounts one of many bad luck hands: Raising a bet of 500 on the turn to 1500 with the nut straight, he gets three callers (not what you want with two hearts showing). The river brings the pesky heart and there's a bet and two calls in front of him, making the pass unavoidable. He is shown one small flush and two sets! Could have been so good, that one. Not disheartened though.

Rob Yong has 8,000 now - if he can do it Tikay can too, I'm going to tell him.

Paul Zimbler     5,000
John Gale     12,000
El Blondie     28,500
Stuart Nash    12,000
Harry Demetriou 38,000 (having just knocked out Devilfish)
Mickey Wernick  15,000

I was just informing someone that Harry Demetriou was near the chip leader with 40k, when they said "I have 59,000." This turned out to be Edward Moncada, who won the WSOP bracelet this year for the 2000 PLHE. He is indeed the chip leader, and is worth keeping an eye on...

Other chip news:

Imraan Ladak  6,500
Mike Magee   16,000
Greg Amoils   12,000
Achilleas Kallakis 9,300
Burnley John  8,225
Channing     2,100
Bruce Atkinson 15,000
Dan Alspach   13,400

Stuart Nash has been moved to Tikay's table with 16,000 in chips.

Tikay has left it to me to describe his exit - Attempting to get back in it he found AK on the button and raised Burnley John's 500 to 1500 and was called by John and Dan Alspach.  The flop came 9 5 5 and he went all-in when it was checked to him.  Sadly he was up against a pair of Tens and received no help.  Ah well.

There is a new table of doom - Nouri, Harry D, Liam Flood,  The Camel, Simon N, Smurfit, Mickey Wernick, Lucy Rokach.

Chip counts coming after players return from break, which is now.

I must take care of the now "x" in my life and then I will come out fighting, there is something to be said about a guy w/ his life in order and mine has not been since I won at the WSOP!!!! (and won a dream)

It just goes to show that with all that is great comes the wors. How you deal w/ this is a true judge of character, and I will WIN again w/ the positive attitude that I want to have w/ poker and life ;D

Can you believe Jackie said I had a negative attitude ??? Not to anyone that has read my posts on this forum ;D

wsopin06 is 'rookie with a bracelet' Brian Wilson who has been mixing it up on both shores of the Atlantic, taking down the pros and sporting a lovely blondepoker shirt or three. You will know him by his hair first and his Florida accent second.  That is entirely the positive attitude one would expect.  Go for it

Oi John you're not allowed to be off playing 6-card double flop while I'm in a corner watching hold'em!! Mel - take him to the cleaners.

Channing still holding fast to his three chips.  Counts are being gathered by Tikay as I write (their break was 20 min this time)

Simon Trumper has been all the way down to 6k, and is now up to 26k after flopping a set of nines vs someone's top pair and flush draw.

Achilleas Kallakis went all-in blind and got a caller with a pair of 7s. He turned over K9clubs and hit - doubling him to 17k.

No-ones seen Ben Grundy all day, apologies.  I don't know how you missed Wernick, hotdog, he topped the list of counts and all...

note to self dont get involved when you have chips with another player with a stack
espically when all you have is flush draw 2nd set and a low draw and he just has top set

cause your likely to lose alot thank goodness i hit quads on river and now have a huge chip lead

now can we get more updates before i get involved again

Here are the chip counts for the upstairs, which now houses all but one table.  Heard floorperson saying there were 72 players left.

Simon Trumper  30k
Chandra Khajuria  27k
Mike Magee        6k
John Kabbaj       17k
Womble             8k
Channing           14k (!)
David Benyamine 25k
Angelo B. (the Third Frenchman)  12.5k
Burnley John     2.4k
Peter Roche      33k
Dan Alspach       21k
Greg Amoils        15k
Achilleas Kallakis   12.5k
Tony G              9.2k

And for all people who may be watching from Norway - Sverre Sundbo is here and with a reasonable 32k stack.  He says hi.

Sonny Osman  15k
Dave Smith   16k
Neil Channing  15k
Womble      9.5k
Mickey Wernick 14.5k
Sverre Sundbo  36k

Only ten minutes to go here and time has just flown by.  Tried to get Tikay to go get some sleep but he was determined to race around counting chips, and was very surprised to find he only had a matter of minutes left today...

I have some badly taken photos which I am going to do my best to put on today, otherwise I am sure Rhowena's are better and she understands her camera a little better...

Ironside is keeping very quiet about his predicted number of players who would return for Day Two. He suggested 40. I have not counted them, but I suggest there may be one or two more than that.......

Who is Mark Greenwood?
I bet Mick doesnt even know him.
Mick is and always will be known as the WORM.
We at least do know him and play at the same club day in , day out.

Just cause Mick was probably moaning or grumbling, dont take any notice of that.
He wouldnt be the same Micky if he wasnt.
Ask him. hes been called a lot worse than the WORM. Hes grateful of being called that.

Title: Re: European Championships, 5k main Event, Live Update - DAY ONE
Post by: Ironside on August 06, 2005, 05:50:44 PM
if he dont like it then its not fair to call him it here
if you want to call it to him face to face then fine

but surely as this is a friendly site if a person doesnt like being called something then they shouldnt be called it

if i took objection to being called a sweaty sock i would hope people wouldnt call me it on here

they could to my face and i would deal with that in a moan or whatever but
we try to make this forum a none aggro forum

Going back, who is Mark Greenwood?

i think Craig is saying that he (Mick) doesn't take offence at the name, and if you look at the last (or one of) realshady's posts (Ash Pervais) he describes Mick as a lifelong friend and refers to him as the worm.
I have heard it called him many many times, even shouted across the cardroom and he never seemed putout, though i'm far too respectful of his highness to call it him to his face ;D
BTW Craig is a good pal of his too
