Title: footie trivia
Post by: johnlarsson on July 02, 2006, 10:10:08 PM
Heres how it goes...

you ask a footie trivia/question whoever gets it right asks the next question.  lets see how long we can keep it going.

ill go 1st.

ONLY ONE PREMIERSHIP TEAM HAS BEEN MANAGED BY 4 MEN WHO WON THE CHAMPIONS LEAGUE AS PLAYERS AND OTHER 2 MEN WHO WON THE WORLD CUP AS PLAYERS

WHO IS THE TEAM?  AND WHO IS THE 6 MANAGERS?

If by Champions League you mean European Cup then

Newcastle

Souness
Gullit
Keegan
McDermott - European Cup

Jack Charlton
Ardiles - Worlp Cup

My Question

Last Top Flight side to field an all English team ?

Title: Re: footie trivia
Post by: johnlarsson on July 02, 2006, 11:01:54 PM
yeh i meant european cup.

u got 3 out of 4 right for the european cup right.  Mcdermet has never been newcastle manager.

Dalglish is the one youve missed

well done

Right.
I never got my chance to ask my question last night so here goes.

This is for the old boys out there who remember the 80's.

Name these two Scottish Internationalists.
I'll call them Player 1 and Player 2.

Player 1 played in the 1984 FA Cup Final, whilst Player 2 was playing in the 1984 Scottish Cup Final.

The following year it was vice versa!

Player 2 was playing in the 1985 FA cup Final and Player 1 was playing in the 1985 Scottish Cup final!

Can you name the players?
As a clue

FA Cup 1984 Everton v Watford and 1985 Everton v Man Utd
Scot Cup 1984 Aberdeen v Rangers and 1985 Celtic v Dundee Utd

Name the only team to reach the FA cup final despite losing a game in one of the earlier rounds........

<post edit comments: apologies for mistake on question where i asked who won the FA cup. They actually lost in the final but then won it the year after>

also a little known fact from those two fa cup finals is that the games were both held up each year because the ball burst and they had to wait for a replacement!

Algeria lost 2-0 to Austria to set up the debacle of the Austria vs West Germany "fixed" game - as Algeria had already beaten W.Germany 2-1 it meant that a draw in the final game between the Austrians and Germans would see Austria top the group and Germany finish second in front of Algeria on goal difference.

Hey presto a draw it was..........

Title: Re: footie trivia
Post by: Sheriff Fatman on July 03, 2006, 02:00:01 PM
It was actually a 1-0 win to West Germany, which was the only result which would get both Germany and Austria through.

It was that game that prompted FIFA to have simultaneous final group games from 1986 onwards.

And the answer to my earlier question was Italy, England and Cameroon (3 draws in the group stages vs Poland, Italy and Peru).  The team effort finally got there.

Sheriff

PS: Matt's failed attempt to start another question has left us in temporary limbo so I'll kick things off with an old chestnut that should get a fairly quick response......

Sunderland in 79, Villa in 81, who in 1980?

Nice job.  The 1912 FA Cup final replay was played at Bramall Lane.  Barnsley beat West Brom 1-0.

There's a story in folklore somewhere that one half of the pitch was actually in Derbyshire but I've no idea if this is true or not.  I would guess not.

Here's one to run in parallel:

Only including stands built since WW2, which stand in which stadium had the shortest life before it was knocked down?

Arsenal  Sheriff's Question

Got it.

Its well known that Arsenal are the team with the longest unbroken run in the top flight (since 1919) but they actually got elected there, rather than winning promotion in the traditional way.

They expanded the league after the first World War but, instead of allowing a relegated team to stay up (which ironically would have been Spurs) or the 3rd placed team going up from Division 2 (which ironically would have been Barnsley) the Football League committee elected to promote Arsenal who had finished 5th in Division Two in the last season of football before the war.

The rest, as they say, is history...

Title: Re: footie trivia

Not Millwall, Reading or Man City

The side stand at Maine Road was extended not demolished and rebuilt so technically wasn't new. Bloody good guess though

the stand I am talking about was built from scratch, the previous stand having been demolished

The year is 1994. It held 13,500 people

Within a decade the club is in a new ground.

On the site now? student flats.

North London Derby

Oh yes. My family used to live in West London and Brentford was a short journey away on the train from Barnes where I lived.

I first went there in my teens to see Brentford against Wigan and stood on the side terrace

I subsequently saw my team win there in Brentford's short sojourn in the second highest division in the early 1990s

Finally, I even saw the London Broncos as was play rugby league there

Nice friendly club.

Anelka yes :)

What are the league grounds you have to visit this season Tightend?  Are you including the new Arsenal stadium on your tours for curiosity?

Also, there is a club isn't there for people that have been to all the league grounds - is it an official members thing that you apply to or do you just include yourself in it when the goal is achieved.

And....what year do you take the 92 grounds from?  Teams obviously get promoted and relegated so this years is different from last.

Just curious :)

Yes the 92 club exists

It is much more difficult these days with new grounds and 2 up 2 down from the conference but once you are in you are in but the real anoraks have to visit the new grounds to believe they still qualify

Yes I have to do the Emirates this season.

Amongst the grounds I have yet to do are Torquay, Carlisle, Darlington (new ground), Hull (new ground), Accrington (just up) to give a few examples....a bit of travelling to do

no, not Nick Barmby....tottenham, liverpool but not a manchester side or Sunderland/newcastle...

the North east derby does not include Middlesboro

Keep thinking

mainly they are lower league remote type towns where leicester have never played...and new grounds!

Leyton Orient play in Leyton, district of London. Curiously there is also a Leyton FC in the Ryman League, a Leighton Town (Leighton Buzzard) in the Ryman League and a non league football club in Leytonstone

Rushden are no longer a league team and play in Irthlingbrough. They were the amalgamation of Rushden town and Irthlingborough Diamonds when Max Griggs arrived

Could be a good one in Scotland as well.... but I think you'd have to narrow it down to teams with place names (ie Celtic, Rangers, St Mirren etc don't have place town/city names at all.....)

Partick Thistle are based in Maryhill, not Partick.Queens Park (the original ones) play near Queens Park, but I don't think it's the area they play in. Clyde don't play near the Clyde anymore.... Other Scots fans needed to complete this one though

Yep, that's correct against Southampton.  It was also Pennant full first team debut.  Also Ian Wright on first full team debut also score a hat-trick and this too was against Southampton.

Orient are the only team to have played league games at Wembley - but this was back in the 30's i think when they were known as Clapham Orient and the total was only a handful.

Quote
It was also the venue for Arsenal's home Champions League matches in 1998-99 and 1999-2000. The only other time it has hosted an individual club's home matches was in 1930, when Clapton Orient played two home Third Division South games there.

Now I'm definitly confused I tried to cheat and that didn't help at all

Hmmm, will have to call the dubious goals committee out for that one!! ;)

Two more FA Cup questions:

1) Who is now the sponsor for this seasons FA Cup

2) Wilfred Minter once scored 7 goals in one FA Cup game for St Albans City but his feat was a record breaking one for what reason?

I got sent this today and my head hurts any ideas people, i don't know the answer, but i will find out.

In London Spurs and Arsenal could do it, as could Chelsea and West Ham.
Both Manchester City and United could also do it. Everton and Rangers could do it, but not Liverpool or Celtic. The only British clubs that could do it this season are Man United (who would probably prefer not to) and Arsenal (who have gone closest so far and are desperate to do it).
It would take Everton and City the longest to do it.

There is only one other British club that could do it. Who are they and what is it?

I remember it like it was yesterday. 1979 or so. Match of the Day, Jimmy Hill. Its New Years day or so and its cold enough to freeze most games off, but this club had a tent over its ground...before undersoil heating of course.

The club is playing at home to Norwich and this midfielder scores the winner having played the whole match in his wife's white tights.

The MOTD credits had this player in slow motion to the music from the ballet Swan Lake

I was 12, this player was a hero of mine

He sadly died last year of cancer

I expect most of you are too young to remember classic MOTDs from the 1970s.....

Speaking of which. Remember that MoTD series with Dennis Waterman that covered 1970's football.
It had one hour programme for each of the seasons in the decade. It was class. Highlight was always
Davis Coleman shouting 'One- Nil'.
Can this be bought on DVD? Anyone know?

It most certainly isn't

I can give clues.

The first clues are you are looking for a big SPL team, lower league Welsh team, yo-yoing English team. When he played they were top division....and they are now. Well known N Irish team.

Many many caps for his country

Now retired

Rough playing career 1980s to mid 1990s

Yes but that's ok though, isn't it?

Captain of Northern Ireland, many caps,  played lots for Rangers and Watford ( yo yo club? ).

That's where it then starts to fall down though!!   ;D

Was just a thought though!

I'd assume answer is more likely to be a Irish/Scot though than English due to the fact we can probably remember most of England's 1980's captain's/ multi capped players ??

i think o'neil was playing right midfield

i saw an interview with him once talking about how he didnt start the cup final because francis had his shirt
i also saw an interview with oneill and he said he didnt play because clough thought he was injured but oneill disagreed at the time,he then went onto say looking back clough was probably right!

I scored 185. Missed some real obvious ones so I reckon somebody on Blonde can get them all.

I admit to googling the spelling of some players names. Might be classed as cheating but I've never been able to spell that Danish goalkeepers name!
