also a little known fact from those two fa cup finals is that the games were both held up each year because the ball burst and they had to wait for a replacement!

Algeria lost 2-0 to Austria to set up the debacle of the Austria vs West Germany "fixed" game - as Algeria had already beaten W.Germany 2-1 it meant that a draw in the final game between the Austrians and Germans would see Austria top the group and Germany finish second in front of Algeria on goal difference.

Hey presto a draw it was..........

It was actually a 1-0 win to West Germany, which was the only result which would get both Germany and Austria through.

It was that game that prompted FIFA to have simultaneous final group games from 1986 onwards.

And the answer to my earlier question was Italy, England and Cameroon (3 draws in the group stages vs Poland, Italy and Peru).  The team effort finally got there.

I thought that was the question you were apologising about - that'll teach me to skim read!

I had apologised as my original question asked "who won the fa cup" when in fact they only made it to the final. They won the cup the year after - i wasnt sure how many people had already read the question before i realized my error.

Anyhow, the answer is Charlton - they had two-legged rounds for one season after the war.

You're getting there (Leeds winning in 1972 would scupper your first answer).

nope - beats me, i cant think of a final that was played outside of London apart from when it went to the Millenium stadium. I'm guessing it was a replay but cant think of any off the top of my head.

Either that or its a trick question and your talking about the Women's FA Cup!!
