I bought the house i currently live in 5 years ago and have lived in it for 4.5 years now.

Today on entering the utility room i saw a double light switch by the back door and wondered what the hell the second switch was for. I decided to gamble and switched it on and to my amazement a fan started making a "fan" type noise. I have since found out that as the boiler and tumble dryer etc. are in this room, it is to remove humidity and condensation etc.

How can it take 4.5 years to find such a thing?

Has anyone else ever found anything after so long living in a house? If so, what was it?

I moved a book in the bookcase and it swung back to reveal an entrance to a firemans pole and the batcave below

BTW, for the record, if you want to wind me up and say things about me for a laff, it will never be taken seriously or personally. I am all for a bit of banter and fun and urge you to continue, mainly cos it frees me up to pay the favour back lol

not quite 4.5 years, but after just short of two years in this place I realised that the vents at floor level under our kitchen cupboard is a floor level heater.  I'd never noticed the switch, which probably goes to show how clean my kitchen floor is!

We've had a dishwasher for about 3 years, too lazy to wash up.

I'm also too lazy to know how the dishwasher works.  All I know is hot kitchen items come out of it now and again.

We had a switch underneath the top of the stairs but never figured out what it did.

Lee to be honest, during the whole month i stayed at your hourse you didnt seem to know thier was a utility room! Debbie handles all that!

Funnily enough I was thinking along the same lines! Lee, I thought all you used it for was to store your hundreds of empty diet coke cans, ready to be recycled?!

Actually, I'm surprised you've even noticed it now! as you sent away you garden in skips, what do you actually go out of that door for?   :D  Nothing would shock me with you, after the "wow, I found a motorbike in my garage" moment (I still don't get how you could forget buying a beast like that) So not seeing a switch is a pretty minor thing tbh lol

I went there to put some clothes in the tumble dryer throw my porn mags and kebab wrapper in the bin. The garden is work in progress, 3 skips filled and i'm now doing the good stuff!!


I really have no answer to this one, you have me beat. What i can say is that if i havn't been in my garage for 5 or 6 months, how could i know?

After getting a couple of pals round on Friday afternoon to help with the gardening i have discovered that i have a back fence!!!!!!!!!
I also found a bar B cue, a watering can and 2 gnomes!!

In our kitchen, we have the normal work surface with cupboards underneath then some cupboards on the wall type thing - normal kitchen stuff.  The wall units have lights under them - again pretty normal, but in the 4 years we've lived here, we can't figure how to turn them on.  Wierdly, I'm sure I've had them on before but I can't for the life of me get them on again.

Normally, these lights are daisy chained together and they are often plugged in above the wall cupboards. Stand on the work surface and have a look above for a plug. Either that or they have individual switches on the actual lights. The only other scenario is that your normal light switch has extra switches which will operate them.

Kitchens are tricky things to work out.  Extractor fans hurt my brain.  They are fiddly things ( well my one is anyway. It may be due to the fact it is older than me )

My extractor hasn't failed in 5 years.

I've tried all that, it's no where.  I've had the cupboard all out to see if there's a switch inside, tried following the wires, but they go inside stuff I can't see, I've stood on chairs and knelt as low as I can go.

Well, it does, I just can't find the bloody thing :D

Get a hammer and smash holes in the wall at 6" intervals until you find where the wires end up :D
(as in the borrowers and that Gene Hackman film where he was looking for a bug)

OK this is a mission now, we have to find the switch. Behind any appliances already plugged in or switch is located in another room adjacent?

It can't be in an adjacent room, the only room really adjacent is next door (that would be wierd :D) and our dining room, which it isn't in.

It's too late to be searching for a solution to an age old problem now, I'll look again in the morning :)

I did lose my car one time. I left it outside a bar and forgot about it....
