Title: Whose New Year's resolution is to give up smoking?.. Post by: Mango99 on January 02, 2008, 03:16:33 PM Well, it's mine for a start...
Kind of.. Just gonna smoke the last of my tabs, pop down the shop and get some nicotine gum. It's a filthy habit. Makes your clothes smell and your breath bad. Also kills you. Hell it's enjoyable, but I fancy being able to breathe unaided by the time I get to 50. Anyway fancy joining me or taking part in a last-longer bet? Not sure how this would be judged though... :) Title: Re: Whose New Year's resolution is to give up smoking?.. Post by: danafish on January 02, 2008, 03:19:45 PM I lasted 6am New Year's Day to 5pm New Year's Day. Total waking non-smoking time = 2 hours. Good luck, man.
Title: Re: Whose New Year's resolution is to give up smoking?.. Post by: Claw75 on January 02, 2008, 03:24:56 PM My plan was to give it a bash from Friday but not too confident tbh. Think I might need to give it another week or so and re-read Alan Carr first.
Good luck! Title: Re: Whose New Year's resolution is to give up smoking?.. Post by: Jim-D on January 02, 2008, 03:29:07 PM The best way to give up is to get pregnant!! A close friend of mine was a real heavy smoker and from the second the piss test was positive the urge for a ciggie vanished and hasn't touched one for 4 months,
Now i understand it's not the most practical way to kick the habit but atleast it's another option for you (women atleast) ;) Title: Re: Whose New Year's resolution is to give up smoking?.. Post by: boldie on January 02, 2008, 03:32:29 PM New year's resolutions are bollox..if you didn't quit earlier you are not ready to quit yet..simple as that. New year's resolutions only make you feel guilty when you break them.
Either do it because you really want to or don't do it at all..you shouldn't need the feeble excuse of having bought a new calendar to quit. I found out I was pregnant with my daughter 2 weeks into giving up smoking - so that ensured I didn't touch one again. By the time she was 4 months old I'd gone over a year without a ciggie and was sure I'd reached the stage where I could just be a social smoker......... New year's resolutions only make you feel guilty when you break them. Aye, it's not really a New Years Resolution, as I've been planning on giving up anyway. Just thought it might be easier to get the Christmas (and especially) New Year's parties out of the way first.Either do it because you really want to or don't do it at all..you shouldn't need the feeble excuse of having bought a new calendar to quit. Just thought I'd post to see if anyone else was doing the same, as it's the time of year when people tend to give up (this and non-smoking day I expect)... Not sure how this would be judged though... :) Stuff nicotine replacement, a social smoking friend (5 ciggies on a night out once a week) became addicted to the gum and was using it constantly in the end as it created a bigger dependency as he wouldn't smoke all the time but chewing on gum isn't an issue anywhere. I would reccomend Allen Carrs book personally but i know it doesn't work for all. Best of luck anyone who is trying to stop smoking though. Post by: jizzemm on January 02, 2008, 11:04:04 PM Well im proud to say i gave up about 6 weeks ago and i dont even miss it unless i am out, so the answer to that has been to drink less, or go out less.. boring i know, but since I stopped i found that i dont enjoy a drink as much, but when i do go out i can drink so muc more..
The other positives has been that i have been far more active, Gym used to be a chore, now I want to go, i want to be there, now i just need to start looking like I go there.. ;carlocitrone;. Give up Matt if you can because you will feel the benefit for sure.. Make the next blonde bash your target... GL :)up Title: Re: Whose New Year's resolution is to give up smoking?.. Title: Re: Whose New Year's resolution is to give up smoking?.. Post by: LLevan on January 03, 2008, 07:22:16 PM I didnt give up either, I have stopped being addicted to nicotine...........about 8 weeks ago I bought the Allan Carr book: The Only Way To Stop Smoking Permanently.................spent about 10 days reading it(all 470 odd pages of very small print) and continued to smoke whilst reading it. Got to the chapter where you light your last cigarette and followed the intstructions to a T except that I only had 2 puffs of the last cigarette and then put it out. I havent given up anything, I have become a non-smoker end off. Considering I've smoked since the age of 14/15 and I'm now 45(yes Grandad the real 45) and I smoked anywhere between 30 to 50 cigarettes a day its amazing that I managed to stop being addicted to nicotine so easily as by reading a book. I personally believe that Allan Carr to a certain extent brainwashes you but I've no complaints about being brainwashed in this instance and can't speak highly enough about how he has helped me become a non-smoker. 6 weeks in now and I've hardly had any cravings whatsoever, I don't feel the need to preach to anyone to stop smoking but if you genuinely do want to try I recommend spending the price of 2 packs of cigarettes or even less for a copy of 1 of Allan Carr's books.
Good luck to anyone trying to become a non smoker. Title: Re: Whose New Year's resolution is to give up smoking?.. Post by: MPOWER on January 03, 2008, 08:38:54 PM I wanted to stop.

Agreed also. However, I think the main reason I've been irritated and annoyed so much by evangelistic non-smokers before, is that every time I've felt they have a point and that smoking is stupid. Maybe they don't need to be quite so righteous about it though. I'm certainly never going to criticise or make snide comments about any smoking friends if I manage to give up. Anyway, down to the single last cigarrette in my pack of 20 now lol, then off to the chemist to buy some nicorette or whatever it is they recommend. Here goes (finger's crossed). They recommended nicotine patches rather than nicotine gum. Their view being that as you have to choose to chew the gum or not, it's just as easy to grab a cigarette. As you have the patch on from the morning (I think - haven't read the instructions yet) you don't have to worry about that.
I tried gum last time round and found it wasn't that much of a bother.. but I sometimes forgot to take it with me, meaning I ended up smoking again after 5 days off it. Especially if stuck in a pub or somewhere where there was lots of tempation. Title: Re: Whose New Year's resolution is to give up smoking?..
