Ok,

My first car was a mark 1 Cortina GT.

We added every extra we could , wide wheels, paint job  and yes a furry dash board

The Engine was a Cosworth 1600 with Weber carburetters, that would easily rev to 7,000 rpm

With only 4 gears it would hold 110 mph on the rev limit.no trouble

I loved that car

My family were a bit strange

They had a pet Emu that came in the house in the winter.

When it died they loved it so much they had it stuffed and put in the lounge

I was an ice cream shell, I was about 6 years old and remember it so well as I had never had one before.

My Dad was a member of the Buffs Club...no idea what that means but I think it was a mini Masons. I remember noticing that Santa had brown shoes and thought it a bit odd...I spotted a guy with the same shoes and sussed out  that day that Santa didn't exist :-(

We suspect it to be her grandfather, but we're not sure.

It wouldn't be a cat. Cats like their home to stay in one place, they don't make good pets for Gypsies.

BTW- That's a waggon, not a trailer.

Oh yes!

I only went to Butlins once, but what an eye-opener.

Meals - three a day - were seved in "sittings", two Sittings each. When a particular song came over the PA, it was your turn to eat.

The Dining Hall was a huge place, seated 1,000 or more, & there were sparrows & pigoens flying all around it.

Buffets & self-service were unheard of, & the Waitresses served all the Meals in one "go", hundreds of them all rushing out from the kitchen with several plates of food porecariously balanced on their arms.

When a plate got dropped, as it often did, everyone cheered. We sure knew how to get out of line in those days......

I saw this old picture of Hinckley. It fascinated me so much. The shops, the car, the little girl on the pavement, (Strange to think that by the time I saw this pic, she had lived her life.

I went out and tried to take a modern picture of the same view, (not as easy as it looks)

Back then it was Hi de hi days when you had music playing over a tannoy at like 7am or something ridiculous when it was peeing down with rain and some numpty singing "wake up its a beautiful morning"...those were the days :-)

Spot on :-)

The porridge was abslolutly vile and my mother insisted we ate every drop to build us up for the day LOL

This is my Favourite family photo, only because it has fond memories of the place, but my Mom and uncle are being towed by my great great uncle, who was the ferryman at the Calf of Man, My great Aunts father in law used to own the island apparently, but is now a national trust bird sanctuary. Bit of useless information that i never forgot lol

I hate the fact modern planners saw fit to pedestrianise our city & town centres. Totally destroying the character.

Hinckley was mentioned in the Domesday book, so I suspect it may just have been pedestrianised to start with.

Although some places can create a certain level of blandness with their pedestrianisation schemes I think it makes a refreshing change to have any work that doesn't place the car as being the most important consideration and every other user as less important.

City & town centre users, cars & pedestrians are equally important. Trade & social considerations rely on both. Urban planners since the 70s have usually fallen into the trap of designing pedestrian centred solutions. The result has been bland, dull, windswept urban centres, that at night become no go areas.

City centres are supposed to be busy, chaotic places. That is what gave them individual characters. London was different to Liverpool, & Liverpool to Glasgow....Now this is less the case, & is a great shame.

I'm into wild-craft - food, fire, shelter type stuff & there's some stong devotees of the old-fashined bill-hook, the differnet shapes all have names - I'll see if I can identify that one.

Stunning comparision.

Only one building (the Church excepted) remains "as was".

Note the awnings over the shop windows, every shop had one.

Bill Bryson, in one of his books, noted how, these days, most every Town Centre in the "modern world" looks identical. A KFC, McDonalds, Tesco, PC World, da de da.

There are still some traditional Town Centres though, I saw a bunch of them in North Yorkshire recently.

I think there's still a Buffs club in West Register Street, just behind the Burger King at the east end of Princes Street. I enjoyed a lunch time pint or two in there when I worked nearby in the early 1990s, a cheap place for Friday lunch time drink and always pretty busy. I did once ask what the ROAB actually is and was told it's mainly a charitable organisation. If it's not still there the sign certainly is as I passed by that way a couple of weeks ago.

I cant remember the name of the street, you head towards Haymarket from the West End, just before Haymarket you go left and the road doubles back, there was a small flight of stairs up to the door. He probably still goes there, Ive not seen him in over 20 years.

Nelson Bickford - Just a classic 19th century name! you only hear names like that in the movies of 'The Olden Days'

One of the few regrets in my life is that I never met my Belgian grandad, and recently took my dad to Brussels to visit his grave stone. Due to the snow it was a bit of a nightmare, but found it in the end.

Only just seen this, didn't realise you were related to Brucie..
