On My Grandads Boat that my Aunt (the battle axe in the overalls) lived, blimey just realised there's only me and my little sister still alive

This is my Favourite family photo, only because it has fond memories of the place, but my Mom and uncle are being towed by my great great uncle, who was the ferryman at the Calf of Man, My great Aunts father in law used to own the island apparently, but is now a national trust bird sanctuary. Bit of useless information that i never forgot lol

I saw this old picture of Hinckley. It fascinated me so much. The shops, the car, the little girl on the pavement, (Strange to think that by the time I saw this pic, she had lived her life.
I went out and tried to take a modern picture of the same view, (not as easy as it looks)
I hate the fact modern planners saw fit to pedestrianise our city & town centres. Totally destroying the character.

I bet 'Simpkin & James' never expected to be a KFC! But how much easier on the eye is their logo than the brash red KFC 1?

Hinckley was mentioned in the Domesday book, so I
suspect
it may just have been pedestrianised to start with.
Although some places can create a certain level of blandness with their pedestrianisation schemes I think it makes a refreshing change to have any work that doesn't place the car as being the most important consideration and every other user as less important.

Me too so to get back to the original topic....I am middle top. Photo is me and my sisters and brother at our first Christmas party
Pics like that are priceless Suzanne.
Is that an orange you're eating?
I was an ice cream shell, I was about 6 years old and remember it so well as I had never had one before.
My Dad was a member of the Buffs Club...no idea what that means but I think it was a mini Masons. I remember noticing that Santa had brown shoes and thought it a bit odd...I spotted a guy with the same shoes and sussed out that day that Santa didn't exist :-(
At least your clue was subtle - I went to the Xmas party at the school my Mum taught at & the Santa was black. Ma Paradise tells me I was very indignant thet they'd set us up with such an obvious fake.

Oh Rod, he wishes regularly that I never used the forum. I could sit here and not say a word of course, but where would the fun be in that?!

City & town centre users, cars & pedestrians are equally important. Trade & social considerations rely on both. Urban planners since the 70s have usually fallen into the trap of designing pedestrian centred solutions. The result has been bland, dull, windswept urban centres, that at night become no go areas.
City centres are supposed to be busy, chaotic places. That is what gave them individual characters. London was different to Liverpool, & Liverpool to Glasgow....Now this is less the case, & is a great shame.

I think Tim (Mr Laxie) summed it up best at the last bash.

Here's a pic of my old man, (who incidentally is 78 today) with Bobby Charlton at an event my Dad was running.

To get it slightly back on track here's an old picture with lots of roads.
And this is the (ground level) version with pavements
Personally I'd prefer to see lots more of the second rather than the first.
