I don't really know anything about them, other than owning a Eurovox MaxV or whatever it's called.

That one looks excellent though, and I think I'd be going for one like that (with a recorder) if I was buying mine again.

Is it possible to get one of these that transmits HD signals or is it not techincally possible?

Blatant "I have a flashy HD TV" brag post imo.

:D

Another question, I used to have cable as my tv but switched over to Sky, can I test if the feed is still live by plugging the old cable wire thingy in to the back of the tele - will/should it pick up freeview channels? I think I read on the forum that's what you do but I'm not 100%.  Also, my internet is still cable, can I use the internet cable to do this or is it seperate?  If I can, can I split the cable in to two, one for the net and one for the Eurovox?

Title: Re: Eurovox
Post by: kinboshi on September 18, 2008, 02:26:11 PM
I have cable broadband, but cancelled my TV.  I have a splitter (about £3) that takes the signal to the TV as well as the cable modem.

You won't need to test it, it will work.

Post by: Graham C on September 18, 2008, 02:49:21 PM
Cool.  I'm undecided on whether or not to have my Eurovox in the living room or in the room with the computer.  I currently have Sky in the living room but a tv card in my comp with the Sky freeview channels in the comp room.  Obv having the sports in a second room is a huge bonus, but having the rest of the channels in the main room is a plus too as we don't subscribe to the movies or setanta.

Decisions decisions.

Where do you get things like splitters from?  I really don't have a clue and I'm sure our Tandy's stopped trading about 10 years ago!

Ebay for £3.  Some of the Eurovox sellers include one with them.

Get two boxes - problem solved.

I may get two, let's see if I can get one working first!

Got it today, updated the box, no problem, went to plug in the scart lead.....ah, I don't have a spare scart lead, in fact, I've just given one away with a video player I no longer use.

Tomorrow, I'll get one and see if I can get it working.

Title: Re: Eurovox
Post by: Graham C on September 23, 2008, 02:08:06 PM
I'm having a lolshocking afternoon.

I popped into town to get the missing scart lead, finish up and go back to the car. I didn't quite open the car door far enough so it sprung back and hit me just above my eye on the boney part.   It hurt.   A lot.

Popped home to set the box up but opened my post first and letter one was  shitty letter from Vodafone saying that as I'd cancelled my direct debit, they're going to charge me more plus an admin fee.   It's an hour later but I've sorted that out.  It turns out that if you cancel your contract you can cancel your direct debit and all the fees are credited, but they don't bother to let you know.

Letter two was the speeding notice asking me to plead guilty otherwise they'll take me to court.  Evidence?  mmmmm evidence.

So I finally sit down and follow the instructions and I can see the set up on the screen.  I'm in here surely!  Needs to scan from 1 to 770 at a pace of about 2 seconds per channel.   OK I'll do a bit of tidying whilst I wait.  About 25 mins later I'm at 625/770 and it dawns on me that I didn't plug the arial in the back of the box.

It's a tiring afternoon and I've the thrills of our accountant popping over later :D

Hopefully I'll get sorted out later.

Hurry up and sort it out Graham - I'm thinking about buying one!

Title: Re: Eurovox
Post by: Graham C on September 23, 2008, 10:00:49 PM
Right, it's up and running....almost 100% too.  I've put the hard drive in the wrong way and need to swap it over, but apart from that it's all good.

I did make one further mistake which was to plug the cable connection into the video hole.  This doesn't work so I'd advise against it.

It's a good bit of kit.  I'm not quite sure what I can say about it, it works well and I've now got loads of channels I didn't have earlier which is lovely for the movies and the extra sports.  It's a really nice bit of kit. I do need to get the hard drive sorted though.

Title: Re: Eurovox
Post by: ACE2M on September 24, 2008, 12:46:56 PM
just got mine this morning, going to sort it out tonight.

So i will need an extra scart lead then, anything else?

Title: Re: Eurovox
Post by: Graham C on September 24, 2008, 02:25:35 PM
Just the scart lead.  And the little bit of plastic with a white panel - that's apparently supposed to be stuck to the hard drive to pull it out again.  Not quite sure how I'll get mine out again at the moment :D

Oh make sure you plug the cable connection in the right hole :blonde:

So, other than user error.... it's working OK?

Can you schedule your recordings?

Title: Re: Eurovox
Post by: Graham C on September 24, 2008, 04:24:23 PM
Yeah it's all down to user error.

Can't record anything yet due to the hard drive being stuck in the wrong way.  I need to correct that then take a look but I cant see a tv guide on there yet.  I can get the current program but haven't worked out how to get future programs.  I'm sure you can, like every other problem I've had, it's more than likely user error :D

I shouldn't be able to get fancy things like this!

mmm, maybe, why do you need one?  I thought you had a box already?  Do you record lots?

It does work a treat though, at about 6pm I set a film to record at 10pm and it recorded and everything.  I'm yet to watch it, but i have a feeling it worked.

Did you have sky before getting yours?  I'm wondering whether or not to keep my Sky now.  Does mean I won't be going HD for a while :(

I have one that doesn't record.  So I still have Sky+.

I don't want to spend £50+ a month on Sky+ if I can get this box to do the live pause and recording that my Sky+ does.

No Sky One though (on mine anyway) so I have to keep the basic package I think.  Will be getting rid of the sports though, should save about £20 per month

That's the only channel that you can't get.  Think that was why the Citeh match the other week was on Sky One - and I think they've done it for other matches as well.

I guess for the programmes shown on Sky One there's always the interwebz.

Now press the blue button (powerscan) (the colour options on the remote and on screen differ for the EVMAX this will be the yellow button) this will open another smaller window with the heading "full power scan". If you are on the T/W network press the OK button, if however you are on the NT! network you will have to highlight within the window the first entry for symbol rate, usually (6.952) and edit this to (6.887)then press OK. The box will now scan all frequencies and find all active transponders for your area, Then it will scan them all for channels. This can be a long process, So go and have a cuppa and a read of your newspaper.

Yes.  Been away for a few days, and so only got hold of it tonight.  Just finished flashing it and installing the firmware.

All good.  Now just have to sort the channels out into a sensible order in the favourites!  The PVR thing seems to work well.  Told Sky to cancel my contract last night, so that will stop in 30 days.

lol, to be honest, I've been watching Sky mostly!  I did phone to cancel the sports, but they offered me £15pm off for 3 months so in effect it's only £3 for the month so I said yes go on then.  I was only going to reduce to the basic package where you can get Sky One, we watch that a bit for Prison Break, Lost etc, wouldn't wan to be with out really.  I know I can download them but I don't want to watch them on the pc and burning them to dvd is a chore.

That said, the box is working great, I've recorded a couple of bits successfully too. I just need to get in to the habit of watching it more and set a decent set of favourites up.

Does that £15pm for 3 months tie you in to a longer contract (say for 12 months) at the standard rate?

They asked me why I was cancelling, and I told them I'd just got a new job on an oil rig.  That sort of put an end to them trying to offer me something at a discount :D.

any chance you can give me a quick guide on setting them up, somehow they got sorted into movies, sports, popular etc but i never bothered to mess with them after that and i hate reading instructions.

Would like to just pull all the things i normally watch into one list called ie 'my stuff' and have the rest sorted as it is now.

Any ideas how i take any of the channels given non descript names like 'bics1' and assign it to my sports section or movies section after renaming it? Found a couple of channels not duplicates or ascribed their own names e.g. sky sports extra.

I love it on the whole just wish i could be arsed to sort the final tweeks to make it spot on.

The only thing that really annoys me is only being able to watch a few channels when recording.

Title: Re: Eurovox
Post by: kinboshi on October 12, 2008, 06:09:29 PM
You just go into the menu and the favourite manager.  You then go through each channel, one by one and stick it into a favourite group.

You can also change the names of the favourite groups - so you can have a 'His' and a 'Hers' group if you wanted.

You can also edit the names of any of the channels.

Didn't know you could change the names, can you create new ones too or just rename?

Also, my signal only comes through at 80% ish, would a booster have much effect?  What does yours come in at?

I don't think you can create new groups, just rename the existing ones.

80% is spot on.  I thought this when I got mine, but apparently 80% is spot on.  If it's much less, you need a booster; and if it's much more than 80% you need something to weaken the signal (no, I'm not kidding!) as apparently the Eurovox has a sensitive tuner or something.

The picture should be just as good (if not better at times).  Might be worth going on to http://www.techwatch.co.uk/forums/eurovox/ and doing a search.  If nothing comes up in that, then start a new thread - but be prepared for some flack as they don't always take well to n00b questions.

nah, it's ok.  It's certainly watchable, and it's better than normal tele, just not quite as crisp as Sky that's all.  It's not a biggie, but when I saw it was only running with 80% signal, I wondered if it was right.  Will maybe have a quick look though.

Perhaps you had a really bad picture before.  Yes, that's what it it, I'm sure of it.  No need to confirm, you had a  really bad picture :D   Actually perhaps it's just on certain channels.  I tend to watch Sky still for most of my stuff, then switch over for the stuff I don't have on Sky.

Sky1 now on Virgin, and so now on the Eurovox too :)up

(Sky2 and Sky3 as well, some Sky Arts channels and I think SkySports News) as well.

You'll need to do a powerscan and then a channel scan to pick them up.  Make sure you choose not to sort your favourites when doing the advanced powerscan - otherwise it'll wipe them all.

I'm not sure what baud thingy I need to be scanning, I'm NTL in the south, I did have a sheet that was an idiots guide on how to do it (came with the box) but I cant' find it.

Can you help please?  I shouldn't be allowed these things!

scrub that, found it.  Always the way, spend ages looking, ask for help then find it straight away.

Yes I think there is.  I seem to recall seeing a post about HD Eurovox that had just become available but was for satellite only.  Will see if I can find the link again, I'm sure it was on AV forums

There is a HD Eurovox that's a satellite receiver: http://www.maxking.co.uk/shopcart/product.php?productid=16564&cat=0&page=1

Not a clue about satellite though myself.
