No - Platoon, Catch me if you can, Avater, Casino (wouldn't expect Rounders tbf), Oceans 11...I guess we could all go on.. Would have thought Casino, wouldn't have a great appeal to the general public, same with Rounders obv, I fell asleep during Oceans 11 and Catch me if you can was 100 x better as a book than a film imo. Can't argue with no1 though. Title: Re: Radio 1 Top 10 films Post by: celtic on March 13, 2011, 02:46:46 AM Oh, and will be watching City of God soon, never even heard of it before now.

Anchorman is well overrated. Slumdog is rubbish. Never seen Clueless but never imagined it was a top 20 film. Title: Re: Radio 1 Top 10 films Post by: outragous76 on March 13, 2011, 08:32:32 AM Stand by me ?

How anyone can say it isn't funny is beyond me.
The Shawshank Redemption is massively overrated. The best film ever? Really? Really really? I'm not saying it isn't good, but the reason it is so popular is because it took about 3p in the cinema, then became a huge word of mouth hit on video and DVD afterwards. It's that film that everyone has got a mate who shows it to them and goes look at this film no one knows about. Because it creeps up on you, people think it's better than it is. Title: Re: Radio 1 Top 10 films Post by: Waz1892 on March 13, 2011, 01:32:41 PM Shaun of the Dead is ace. How anyone can say it isn't funny is beyond me. Really, Really, Really is the best film ever. By the very fact that it became so big despite it's relatively poor showing at the cinema surely proves it? It wasn't massively hyped up by promo's media etc, and yet, became so big, because of workd of mouth. For example a few on here, me included have never seen City of God..so I'll go see it now, and because of word of mouth, this could become a fav film of mine...so i spread the word etc. etc.... Title: Re: Radio 1 Top 10 films Post by: Longines on March 13, 2011, 01:46:24 PM The IMDb top 10 is pretty close to spot on IMO, Inception is slightly overrated due to being new:
Rank Rating Title Votes 1. 9.2 The Shawshank Redemption (1994) 2. 9.2 The Godfather (1972) 3. 9.0 The Godfather: Part II (1974) 4. 8.9 The Good, the Bad and the Ugly (1966) 5. 8.9 Pulp Fiction (1994) 6. 8.9 Schindler's List (1993) 7. 8.9 12 Angry Men (1957) 8. 8.8 Inception (2010) 9. 8.8 One Flew Over the Cuckoo's Nest (1975) 10. 8.8 The Dark Knight (2008) Title: Re: Radio 1 Top 10 films Post by: redarmi on March 13, 2011, 01:58:10 PM Shawshank Redemption is an interesting one. I always see it rated number one in these things and think there must be better but everyone that sees it loves it. There are films that I think are better from an artistic or storyline point of view but in terms of general popularity I think it deserves to be number one.
Don't really get Shaun of the Dead being in top 20. Funny film but second best ever????? really??? City of God is an absolute must see and the fact that it is the only non english language film in the list when really something like half should be foreign films speaks volumes. I would have Amelie in there too. Never everv watched a film that made me feel as happy as Amelie did. Just a great feel good film. The Godfather has to be higher than 10 too. Oh...and Clueless must be a mistake or there must be a film called Clueless that I haven't seen because the vacuous rubbish I watched is not in the top 20000 films. Title: Re: Radio 1 Top 10 films Post by: mondatoo on March 13, 2011, 02:05:29 PM Never even realised it was listed as no2, seriously WTF ??
Title: Re: Radio 1 Top 10 films Post by: Alverton on March 13, 2011, 02:15:13 PM The IMDb top 10 is pretty close to spot on IMO, Inception is slightly overrated due to being new: Rank Rating Title Votes 1. 9.2 The Shawshank Redemption (1994) 2. 9.2 The Godfather (1972) 3. 9.0 The Godfather: Part II (1974) 4. 8.9 The Good, the Bad and the Ugly (1966) 5. 8.9 Pulp Fiction (1994) 6. 8.9 Schindler's List (1993) 7. 8.9 12 Angry Men (1957) 8. 8.8 Inception (2010) 9. 8.8 One Flew Over the Cuckoo's Nest (1975) 10. 8.8 The Dark Knight (2008) Pretty close. Agree with the inception and prob Dark Knight being in there cos there new, but no real complaints. Although I would have Goodfellas and Toy Story in there. (And Taxi Driver, Chinatown, Raging Bull, Apocalyspe Now, Fight Club, Jaws, Blade runner, Star Wars, Lord of the rings, Ailen, Die Hard, The Apartment, Heat, Terminator 2, and a lot more) Seriously hows anyone meant to narrow it down to 10 or 20? Title: Re: Radio 1 Top 10 films Post by: mondatoo on March 13, 2011, 02:30:48 PM Goodfella's >>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>> Godfather ainec.

and the imdb one obviously has flaws. it's pretty good but having godfather above godfather 2 is just wrong Title: Re: Radio 1 Top 10 films Post by: scotty2hatty on March 13, 2011, 03:01:18 PM Fairly sure that a panel of "experts" or the like picked the 20 films and the public basically picked their favourite from the 20. Wasn't as if you could pick any film you like to vote on.
Title: Re: Radio 1 Top 10 films Post by: sledge13 on March 13, 2011, 03:02:34 PM Jaws >>>>> Everything else...and still lol at The Dark Knight, most overrated film ever! laughable fight scenes, Bale is awful with his comedy growl and non existent plot...Batman Begins was a lot better.
Title: Re: Radio 1 Top 10 films Post by: redarmi on March 13, 2011, 03:07:38 PM Fairly sure that a panel of "experts" or the like picked the 20 films and the public basically picked their favourite from the 20. Wasn't as if you could pick any film you like to vote on. Be surprised if a panel of experts came up with these twenty films. Too many of the critics standing dishes are missing and it has that bias towards more recent releases that is present in every top x list voted on by the public. Suppose it culd have been from a list of 100 or something. Title: Re: Radio 1 Top 10 films Post by: redarmi on March 13, 2011, 03:15:18 PM Just had a quick look and it seems that the public submitted videos saying what their favourites were then an expert panel picked the top 20 which were then voted on. Makes some sense of the order then I guess. Can imagine your average Shaun of the Dead fan being quite pc literate and being more likely to vote than, say, someone who loves Citizen Kane.

Kind Hearts and Coronets (1949) Although, not mentioned yet, but I'm hoping someone will nominate: Kick-Ass Although if it was a film-with-twist competition: The Man Who Wasn't There (big Coen brothers fan, you could almost nominate any of their films in this category) The IMDB top250 is a great way to expand your film horizons. I went through a phase of watching as many as possible (when I had a long train commute, a portable DVD player, and a LoveFilm subscription). Think I went from about 90 to 241. After getting off the bus, I searched for my return ticket only to realise I had lost it. I have spent the last 13 months hitch hiking home :D. Luckily I had a vegetable pie on a low light cooking in the oven so after eating that when i got home, I decided to check out the happenings of the blonde forum :) . My vegetable pie wasn't even burnt, it was perfectly cooked . Title: Re: Radio 1 Top 10 films Post by: sledge13 on April 16, 2011, 09:19:31 PM shawshank redemption isn't even the best film from the book it came from! It nicked all its ideas from Clint Eastwoods classic "Escape From Alcatraz" anyhows...Shawshank is a good film but hardly brilliant, next time Alcatraz is on check the "borrowed" story lines...(obv pasted list, but true!) alcatraz--- shawshank 1.moisture corrodes the walls--- same corroded walls 2.hides nailclipper in bible--- hides small pick-axe in bible 3.wall debris is released thru pant---- same here pockets when outside everyday 4.guy with mouse as pet--- guy with bird as pet 5.african-american friend who is--- same(morgan freeman) senior inmate(Paul Benjamin) 6.pain in the ass warden---- present 7.gay dude bothers protagonist---- gay dudes bother protagonist 8.old guy cant cope without painting(chops fingers)---- old guy cant cope with freedom(commits suicide) 9.protagonist placed in the hold for no fault of his ---- same here 10.the bathing scene---- similar here 11.the movie scene----- similar circumstances Then again if we did a best tv show thread, Eastenders would probs win...the sheeple are in charge... ;) Title: Re: Radio 1 Top 10 films Post by: Horneris on April 16, 2011, 10:08:39 PM It is brilliant Sledge, I watched it for the first time last week, really moved me.
