So we will compile a top 10 by letting everyone have one nomination, no duplicates. When we have, say 40, we will vote, but you can't vote for your own nomination.

I'll start.

Twelve Angry men. (1957 Henry Fonda version)

I have put the nominations so far (and will update) on the OP to hopefully avoid duplicates.

Just to be a bit different, I'd like to nominate:
Kind Hearts and Coronets (1949)

Although, not mentioned yet, but I'm hoping someone will nominate:
Kick-Ass

Although if it was a film-with-twist competition:
The Man Who Wasn't There (big Coen brothers fan, you could almost nominate any of their films in this category)

The IMDB top250 is a great way to expand your film horizons. I went through a phase of watching as many as possible (when I had a long train commute, a portable DVD player, and a LoveFilm subscription). Think I went from about 90 to 241.

Oh, and that Radio 1 list is laughable, mostly. But each to their own, I guess.

If people are taking recommendations, they wouldn't win a popularity contest but try

The Vanishing (Spoorloos) - 1988 version not the awful Holywood remake.
http://www.imdb.com/title/tt0096163/

Also if you have not seen it and like a good war based film with a story and don't mind a subtitle or two try BlackBook (Zwartboek) - a brilliant film.
http://www.imdb.com/title/tt0389557/

Possibly the best subtitled film I have ever seen Das Boot.
http://www.imdb.com/title/tt0082096/

but my vote for the list is

The Holy Grail - comedy at its best.

I'm going to nominate a film called "Thirteen".

http://www.imdb.com/title/tt0328538/

This has to be watched to truly understand it.

La Vita e Bella (Life is Beautiful)

I know it sounds poncey picking a foreign film but not many have had such an impact on me.  One of those where I didn't know much about it before watching and just sat mesmerised on my own.  Both funny and moving and I recommend it to everyone I ever discuss movies with!
