I saw a trailer and thought it was some other roman programme. Not sure of the name. It has jaime murray in it. She wears less clothes than she did in dexter. Google is your friend.

I haven't but discussing this with a bloke at work who has, his opinion was that the first episode follows the books pretty well

I've read all of the books. He's surprisingly not all that well heard of, though the 'Song of Ice and Fire' series is completely breathtaking, in my opinion; though I confess to enjoying fantasy set literature.

In terms of running parallel with the first book, the series does a great job of that. Looking forward to episode two.

I thought the first one was poor, but has improved since - and now I quite like it.

Someone who's read the books said that it sticks very closely to them and if I've liked it so far then I should enjoy the rest of it.  Not sure what that means if you didn't like it so far...

I think they will move stuff around from books 2,3 and 4 to fit the narrative better. I think finishing this season with a certain wedding would be a great idea. Not sure if they'll get that far though.

Yeah, there'll be a bit of shuffling around. Think the main reason we didn't get Arya this episode was they put a COK scene at the end of last season.

Doubt we'll get too far ahead. I imagine we'll be ending similar to the book with the Blackwater.

Fantastic series and I can't believe that it's coming to an end already.  I think 24 made life good for us all with, well 24 episodes in a series.  Few have followed since with that number but the epic ones like Game of Thrones seem to only have 10 in!

Thought this weeks was brilliant with the storming of King's Landing.

Everyone's entitled to an opion, we can't all be right, but we're entitled to it :D (only joking, Lost is pretty good) .   24 was amazing when it came out and was possibly the first one of those type of programs (major US action series with Hollywood stars in) that I saw.  Thought the first 3-4 (5?) series were just the best thing ever, but then it got a little "oh realllllllly" but still enjoyable.

Love Breaking Bad. I'm only on the 2nd series of it and watch it when I get time.

<3

I didn't start watching Lost until midway through season 4.... I sure didn't catch up before season ended and spend the next 2 years tilting my ass off waiting for the next ep/season.

I absolutely loved it and was always getting into it with the people who all hated on the end and the show. What especially tilted me was that the biggest hater didn't even watch the fking show, he watched one season then just moaned on 'unanswered stuff, polar bear, knew that would happen blablabla'  GREASE!!

I've always had a few that were my clear faves, but I could never order them outright. Having watched FNL again recently I think that's got top spot followed by

Lost
Sopranos
Wire

Then you've got Entourage, House, 24, Dexter all vying for a spot in the top 5, GoT has got a lot to live up to now with all this talk in here. I'm pretty excited now and think my flight might just go a lot quicker than anticipated if it's that good!!

Another factor for me is rewatchability.

I've seen season 3 of 24 twice and it was painful the second time around. Also I have no desire whatsoever to ever go through Lost again even though I was hooked the first time. Something like Sopranos which I rewatched recently was actually better the second time around. Ditto for a few other series.

Best series ever... Man V Food :)

Title: Re: Game of Thrones

HBO are great no doubt about it, one mans pleasure is another mans pain though and just because you don't like something it doesn't mean it's not great to that person.

Oz
Sopranos
Six Feet Under
The Wire
Deadwood
Entourage
Hung
Eastbound & Down
Luck

I really enjoyed all of those, some more than others and 2 of them are amongst my favourite shows ever.

Some of the HBO stuff just doesn't appeal to me, I'm not going to watch it just because it's made by them. I will admit to watching most of Tell Me You Love Me because Penny from lost was in it though and naked for much of it :D

I'll agree with Baron on some shows being rewatchable and others not so, I've seen FNL a few times now and absolutely loved it as much the 2nd time even though I knew what was happening, same with Sopranos and The Wire.

I do have Band of Brothers, Generation Kill and Rome on my hard drive to watch, they're gonna have to wait now while I watch GoT and start NCIS.

Can't say I've ever watched Man vs Food though and don't expect to :D

Man vs Food is amazing.

Every episode, guaranteed, an obese hill billy will go by his side when he is struggling and start giving him the motivational speech about how eating shit loads of food makes him a real man, love it.

He came to England recently to film a show, cant wait for that one.

do yourself a favour and don't even consider watching any of season 3. it's truly awful and will ruin any good memories you have of the first 2

HBO are great no doubt about it, one mans pleasure is another mans pain though and just because you don't like something it doesn't mean it's not great to that person.

I totally agree, it's just when in the same breath as Sopranos/Wire we're being told how good 24/Lost is my head actually asplodes.

Band of Brothers is UTTERLY INCREDIBLE, if you have any interest in the war, any respect for those who died and what happened you cannot fail to be moved and amazed. you know the ending and it's still amazing. At uni I kept rewatching it with people who hadn't seen it, all thanked me, I probably watched it right through 6-7 times in 4 years.

Generation Kill is really interesting, whilst Rome is pure class.

I still have a few HBO on my list of things to watch - Boardwalk Empire, Luck, Eastbound and Down and I can't wait!

Also the fact most shows have full 1 hours episodes  ;tightend;

Deadwood is amazing, if you have any interest in the Wild West, Cowboys, drinking whiskey likes it's water, or Lovejoy then you'll find it incredible.

Sons of Anarchy I have also seen, and I hate to sound like a twat, but although it's more than watchable it's not the same level of quality content.

Essentially, I would HAVE to watch every episode of w/e HBO show in order, whereas w/24 or SoA or other more generic stuff I think missing one episode isn't the end of the world.

The theme of Deadwood put me off for a long time but once I watched it I spent a lot of time looking into the Wild West etc.  A truly great series and if you are not normally into historical dramas etc don't let it put you off.

yup totally agree, I was spoilt having watched BoB so often and being so much more familiar with the history of it and specific scenarios, whereas Pacific with it's policy of focusing alot more on the relationship and emotional aspects felt alot harder to watch. Having watched it back again I definitely enjoyed it more the second time.

My main issues with HBO stuff is that it is done so well and at such expense that they can't do enough seasons.

Rome and Deadwood are excellent examples, Rome was co produced with BBC help and the writers had planned something like 5 seasons and half way through season 2 is told btw this is your last we're busto. So has to rush it and try to get everything important into a massively truncated time line. Deadwood was pretty similar in that they filmed I think 3 seasons but then didn't resign all the actors and with so many well known actors giving them a year or two and hoping they would all be free to film at the same time for the same length of time was ridiculously hopeful, they then wanted to finish it with 2 films but even that couldn't find the traction. :( booooooooooo  It's pretty ridic the way the 3rd season finishes purely because it's setting up for the most amazingest best tv show season ever.... :(

Stupidly enough having said all that I would still highly recommend both Rome and Deadwood.

I've always been massively into Wild West, Cowboys/horses/ dem guns etc.  So I found it easy to watch Sopranos/Deadwood/The Wire because they all intrigued me so much. Shows like Treme which is set in post Katrina New Orleans focusing on the people and the place and the history of it pre Katrina and the music scene etc etc, having little knowledge if not interest in that put me off for quite a while but then I watched an episode or two and remembered why i've struggled to ever not enjoy an HBO program (this includes frigging SITC fml).

24 is great for what it was, there was definitely no genius in the writing. There was genius in how they kept the same plot running through 8 seasons though essentially and Bauer just made Chuck Norris look like one of the Chuckle brothers :D

Lost however we'll have to agree to disagree because I just love everything about it and that's even with the fact so much was left unanswered. I looked at it from a different point of view, one which many will differ from and that's the reason it created such vastly differing opinions of it.

NCIS has just been shelved then, I'll put those on my iPad and this summers Vegas viewing will be HBO exclusively. (What an absolute life having all those in the locker too unwatched)

Tbh if I had watched Lost 'in a vacuum' (lol PHA) I could well have actually enjoyed it.

It's when it goes hand in hand with a load of people who have no concept of a good tv show who then rave about it constantly.

was pretty similar to Prison Break. that should have stopped after one series, absolute joke that it was continued. Again I have seen a tonne of PB only because of smashed morning afters at house parties etc where we've just ground a tonne of episodes unable to move. Cant say I remember much or enjoyed it enough to need to see more though. Again it's the sort of thing you can watch turn away for 10  mins turn back and it doesn't matter.

I'm so excited for Boardwalk Empire I dare not watch it because then I will have seen it lol. Tis exactly the same as when people tell me they haven't seen Sopranos or the Wire and I just get so jealous.

OZ is an absolute HBO classic and shows how good HBO are that they can make a show with about 4 female characters and a tonne of male nudity/bumming/murder etc (it's set in a prison ldo) and still be so enthralling.

Really enjoying GoT. Lost was pretty darn good up until the final episode, which still makes me angry whenever I think about it. Awful, awful ending.

Life on Mars was one of the best shows.

I think on the whole I'm a pretty good judge of good shows and I still love it and am glad it ran the way it did.

Prison Break season 1 is one of the best debut seasons of a show ever, season 2 was good and that should have been it. They absolutely butchered it by continuing it and I was just in pain waiting for it to end from then on. I had to carry on to just see what happened and as expected it was just clueless nonsense  ;grr;

I spent most of 2003-2008 smashed so had plenty of viewing whilst on the same planet some of these writers must have been and still can't figure out why they continued with the shows.

As for the ones you haven't, just watch them and enjoy it. New shows will always be coming, I don't like he change so hold off for ages and then when I watch think why did I neglect myself so long.

Oz was great for sure, I watched it after I had seen several other shows and it's com to see characters I've seen popping up in Emerald City :D

Heroes. Spartacus (although the prequel series was awesome series 2 was average).

I wouldn't say you need to be intelligent to 'get it' (I did after all  ;D) say possibly overthinking it maybe as from a character point of view it's amazing and the way they all worked together created great television for me. The plots all were pretty standard and nothing way out there or grounbreaking in all honesty. The way they all worked together made for a great show and Ian McShane was absolutely incred :D

Just done first 5 eps of Eastbound. Wouldn't say I'm a huge fan tbh. It passes the time ok, but So much reminds me of Talladega nights and most jokes are quite predictable. Not lolled much whereas Something like always sunny has me non stop cracking up. Maybe I was expecting too much.

+1 to all this apart from the reading bit. There seem to be lots of little things going on everywhere and I can't keep up. Might help if I concentrated a bit more I suppose.

Cant stand the Dragon bird. I reckon Sean Bean's bastard son who is trapsing about in the snow will be the winner in the end, and that the little girl who pretends to be a boy will be the one to kill Joffrey. Also think the massive blonde bird in the armour will get it together with the massive bearded bloke in the armour.

Peter Dinklage is the best thing about it (and the violence and the boobies).

Well it's called A Story of Fire (Dany?) and Ice (Jon Snow?) so I reckon those two will either be knocking boots or knocking swords by the end of the series.

Title: Re: Game of Thrones

I don't think its that hard to follow.

Maybe in the final eps they didn't explain very well that Robb Stark's chief advisor guy Roose Bolton: http://awoiaf.westeros.org/index.php/File:Roose_tvseries.jpg had his son Ramsey Snow (Snow is the surname for all that are bastard born) take 500 men to Greyjoy and his crew in Winterfell to deliver the message.

And it was poor that they said that the boys had to move North because "they might come back". Could've come up with something better than that I thought. In the books I believed they left much sooner.

Is it right that magic and the walking dead ppl at the end exist again because of dragons being alive again?

My least favourite part of the story is all the Danaerys parts (the girl with the dragons), but I love all the rest, especially the bits with Arya and Tyrion (supposed to be everyones 2 favourite characters I guess). Lord Varys is pretty com too.

tbf Brent, Dany's story is so good in the first book that it takes a while to get going again after that. The Boltons are gonna get very interesting in season 3 imo.

Because they need to keep the narrative going and there are characters that don't appear in whole books they have to stretch out storylines so you don't forget about them. They've already said that from series 2, it's going to be less 'directly from the book' and more 'based on' so that they can move stuff around to fit a TV narrative.

Good point about stretching the storylines out, I guess they have to do that.

Martin hasn't written the 6th book yet and will probably take another 3 or 4 years to write the 7th and probably final one (wants to keep it linked with seven kingdoms etc.) so they will have to space the series' out to a certain extent  :(

It'll be like Harry Potter, some of the characters (the minority that never die) will have to be in it filming in it for like 10 years!

As fit as she is I agree. Terrible actress.

IMO the whole Brann and Rickon (two youngest sons) story is way off. They should be with two other characters called Meera and Jojen Reed whose father was Ned Stark's bezzie mate and who almost certainly has the knowledge of events past which may hold the key to the future.

The "others" and dragons story is unexplained but it is hinted at that their magics are connected (both not seen for 300 years etc) and some other stuff you haven't seen yet to do with the artifacts relaing to ice/fire.

Started watching it again from Season 1. Hopefully I'll pick up a few bits I missed previously.

Already realised that the walking dead extra at the end of season 2 is the same walking dead extra slicing heads off in S1 E1 so it's working already.

Half way through book 3 now and you will not be disapointed

Been reading storm of swords for a while now and am only 43% on my kindle which is beyond tilting to see as I'm a fast reader and it's still taking forever, but I'm reading it in one book rather than the 2 parts.

Can't wait for season 3 so far they have been amazing adaptations of the books hope it continues

Seem to be quite a few things starting up again over the next few weeks.

Probably looking forward to Dexter most of all on the 30th Sept.

Also Big bang theory (27th Sept), Sons of anarchy (11th Sept) and Boardwalk Empire (16th Sept).

Hopefully these will keep me going until Falling Skies returns some time next year.

I've still got 7 seasons of 24 to watch as well so I should be ok. Jack Bauer is clearly the man.

GoT doesn't do grande finales in the final EP. The had Ned die in ep9, the battle of black water in 9 and the red wedding in 9. It's deliberate as they want to keep the fall out (as a true character drama should) for EP 10.

Amazing scene anyway!!

The chapter in the book is even better. Loads of foreshadowing that you don't spot until it's too late. A big deal made about accepting food and wine from the hosts early on so that "you're safe", and that nagging feeling he's referred to the rubbish musicians one too many times....

Brilliant stuff.
