I have a viewing for a flat tomorrow, looks really sick and I really want to live there but theres a potential dilemma with the landlord

The landlord and I have spoken only briefly on the phone but she sounds pretty posh and specifically asked if the tenants were a family or professionals. Suave as you like I insta-answer professionals because I don't want her to, well, hang up.

So the viewing is all set up, its with an agent but she seems like the type that is gunna scrutinise whatever he tells her about be pretty heavily, so whats my play?

(a) Just tell the truth and be a poker player

Positives - No need to spin a web of lies that could get complicated as all 3 of us will have to meet the landlord at some point. I'm the only one going to the initial viewing though.

Negatives - Landlord sounds like she wouldn't like it and might insta mug us off. Insisting on paying 6 months up front might put landlord on the defensive but it'll probably go down well with the agent on commission.

(b) Suit up and go as a self-employed accountant

Positives - Self employed so she can't really ask us for any paperwork (I think). No risk of getting mugged off for not having a suitably respectable profession. We all look young enough to pose as graduates setting up our own accountancy firm, which gives the perfect cover for paying up front - the business won't be launching for another couple of months.

Negatives - If they ask for any sort of proof besides a degree certificate we've got nothing. If we get found out we obv just get told to gtfo.

So tell me blonde, whats my play?

Tell the truth.

Honesty is the best policy Dan IMO.

Six months up front would prob sway it, 12 months def.

Have you got someone that can act as a guarantor?

Offer a few months up front if you really want it and can afford it, if it will help.

a) Tell them you are in shipping...Or
b) Tell them you are self employed t'internet professionals (and hope they don't drill any deeper)...Or
c) Pull up your bank account via mobile banking and show an account balance that makes her smile.

Whilst I usually advocate the truth, the whole truth and nothing but the truth, it won't help you land the flat.

IMO tell the truth!  I will check with the lettings guys in our office what your best to do and post itt early in morning.

Not standard, but most people have a fixed guaranteed income so it's not really an issue.

In her eyes you won't, so getting a guarantor would smooth the whole process over.

Either way, don't lie. It never helps matters.

Definite don't go full on lie. If you say self employed they could ask for accounts or letters from accountants etc which you won't have.
If you pretend it's new business then you have no guaranteed income so may be in trouble.

Not offering all information straight up is an option but think you have to be honest if pushed.

Is this in Barcelona or back in the uk mate. Honesty is the best policy but if you pay enough up front people are happy enough.

As for guarantors, your income may not be as regular but would assume its more than mum n dads

just tell them 'I play poker professionally, here's a few bags in advance, if you have any questions, let me know.'

Spain are bringing in the same as the have in france and italy so it'll be pokerstars.es, ipoker.es and so on. Spanish players won't be able to play on .com sites anymore.

I think you would be mad to tell the truth. People on here are desensitized to poker so have a different mindset to general society. A posh landlady seeking a family or professional people will most likely be horrified. Negative stereotype imagery of blokes sitting round her table smoking cigars and gambling into the early hrs and complaints from the neighbours. There is no need to be on the backfoot here as you are in a commanding position. She wants to rent a flat and you are ready to do a deal with a bumper down payment. Just say the 3 of you are investing £100k in setting up an internet business. If she tries to delve just say it's in the future's market and then start pressing her about the quality of her internet connection, say you're a little disappointed there's no jacuzzi, and remark that the kitchen is a little smaller than it looked in the pictures. It's not really her business to be delving into your affairs too much. Wear a suit, take a couple of references from suitable people and lie well is my advice.

Lying is the nut worst option Dan, used to work in lettings, never seen a lying prospective tenant work out well.

You would have to run so well to find a stupid landlord & agent that buys it.

more to the point any landlord not taking 6 months up front (presuming that is the continued basis), is insane!

Spoke to the lettings guys Dan and they said dont lie and to be upfront with the agent and tell them its unlikely you will pass the landlords checks so therefore you would propose to pay 6months upfront plus 1 1/2 months rent as deposit and then at the end of the 6 months if you wish to stay on you will pay another 6months upfront and any landlord given advice by a good agetn should accept you on that basis.

Fwiw I rented a place in central Leeds when my only income was from punting with no problems and I didn't pay up front although I intended to use it as an option if neccesary.  Agent didn't seem too bothered but I can't remember which firm it was....they were based in The Calls iirc though.

Also I would definitely try and line up a guarantor and some good! references.

I saw this thread asking for some advice and took time to give the best advice I could. A couple of my friends have been turned down for rental properties in similar circumstances. There was no malice in my post just genuine advice. My second post was a light-hearted joke where again there was no malice intended and no flaming of any kind. I say well done to DMorgan for getting his flat and I'm glad his decision to tell the truth paid dividends and he was successful. So why am I a mug?

Tikay, as you can see there are no cliques on Blonde and the atmosphere is splendid for every member. All you have to do is get involved. 

Don't sweat it mate. I was misunderstood  by the masses but then they saw the light and included me in the calendar. I love blonde and enjoy posts of people who deviate from the norm.

We are talking about renting a flat Guy. Is a thread about renting a flat such an emotive and touchy subject that it should be devoid of any humour? I think if you are provoked by a light hearted joke about renting a flat you are very easily provoked. I didn't intend to provoke trouble and so I am sorry if people were offended by the checkboxes.

Somebody who is on the advent calendar for being what Blonde is all about has called me a mug so I suppose I must except this and apologise for my joke. I was out of order and deserve the flaming.

However, would you say calling somebody a mug is provocative? You didn't question that for some reason.

I must admit I don't think I have ever agreed with something Mantis has posted previously but on this occasion I personally would have gone for the lie route as I have had numerous negative experiences with people outside of the poker playing community when they found out I played, one time I nearly lost my job because of it.

Don't think he deserves to be mugged off in this particular thread though.
