all over the shop.  just tried to log in to facebook and it said my password was changed at 12.13pm.  went to my email to change password and that password had been changed too. have just this minute got an email from pokerstars saying someone has tried to hack my account there.  What steps do I need to be taking now other than changing all my passwords?

oh and email from pokerstars says:

It has come to our attention that it seems someone has hacked your pokerstars account,

 In this case, please contact us back via email with the credit card number ending in xxxx and also the three digit security code which appears on the back of your card as well as the expirey date, this will allow us to open your account stright after we recieve this information.


surely not the best idea to do this on a potentially compromised email account?!

pokerstars v quick on the ball.  asked them what had happened - someone got into my email, changed my stars password then tried to transfer funds across.  someone must be pretty desperate for $12

If they've got into your email then your Stars $12 is the least of your problems.

just sending an email and something has popped up on the bottom telling me it's being used in one other location (and shows IP address).  anything i can do with this info?

yeah - sky, powered by gmail.  they've changed my password again. 

on a plus note stars have banned the ip address as it's apparently not the first attempt.

so pokerstars froze my account pending me sending them info.  happy for them to leave it frozen for now and told them so. Only just now I've got an email saying i've just won a tournament, and another email from pokerstars asking if it's me......er no - my account is frozen, remember? (and i don't tend to get those 'you finished in 1st place' message normally.

Id be a bit suspicious as to whether all the PokerStars emails are from them tbh. Do they ask for 3 digit security number in emails normally?

just heard back from stars again, apparently the hacker was still logged in from first access so that's how he was playing.  wonder if i'll get to keep the winnings?

Having reread them pretty sure none of the emails are really from pokerstars. Latest one says my card has expired so they need the new details. Excuse me if i dont email them to you pronto.

You want someone to email them ? Not sure if a third party email would help though.

Maybe them getting back to you so fast shows its not pokerstars!

Email them back and say its all under control and the police have the ip adress and know who is doing this and its in there hands now!

I changed my email and fb passwords from another machine but obv don't want to try to access from home before detecting and removing the trojan (which so far i've had no joy with) have emailed pokerstars support but no reply yet.

Forgive me if i stop indulging the pisstake/jokey replies for a bit - really just want to get this sorted.

Just tried to log into email from phone and password has been changed again despite my having reset it and my security question from another computer. Scans aren't detecting anything. If anyone has any genuine advice here i'd be really grateful. It might seem like a bit of a joke given i dont have much money in mycaccount etc but feelingvpretty violated knowing someone is in my email, never mind the poker stuff.

Claire, forget about the poker - you need to get your email secure.

Switch off the computer you think is compromised and access Gmail from sonewhere else and follow the instructions from google as to what to do if you are hacked,

Could they have the email open, so they don't get locked out?  Can you isolate the account from everything linked with it?

possibly, but everytime I've caught them using the account at the same time as me I've hit a button saying 'end all other sessions' so that should've kicked them out.


I did that earlier at Gary's.  the password somehow got changed again since then despite not having opened the email account on my own computer.  current activity is showing that the rogue IP address last used the email account an hour ago.  At a bit of a loss as to what else I can do here?

It doesn't work like that imo. If they have your email 'open' (presume you mean 'looking at an inbox after logging in', you can still login from another machine and change the password, and then the hacker can do nothing until he's logged in again with your new password.

Contact Google, get the email shut down.
Contact your bank, freeze the account for web transactions, probably cancel credit card.

New viruses are really sophisticated, will probably be hard to remove. Almost definitely has a keylogger in it. Expect to virus wipe, reboot, and find it still there. You can take other steps to try to fully eradicate it, but you may have to get a new hard drive, sometimes formatting doesn't even work.

Sounds like they have a hold of your secondary email security info, like 'secret' questions and linked email accounts? (Or they've set the latter up themselves). Only google can sort that for you.

ran norton power eraser this afternoon.  It detected one odd file that it didn't think was suspicious, but I deleted it anyway.  Since then there has been no activity on my email.  I've changed facebook settings so any attempt to access from anywhere other than my computer results in a passcode being texted to my phone.  No attempts since then.

I guess the main point of the thing was to try to get my card details through pretending to be pokerstars security, but they obv realised i'm  not playing along with that one.

the real pokerstars have replied to my email now and are going to call me later.

My bank details should be safe - any time I try to log on to my account from anywhere other than my home computer I get texted a passcode.  Nothing has come through.  Obviously haven't wanted to attempt logging on today from here just in case.

no they wouldn't.  what was quite lol was this email asking for my card number and security code with some spiel on the bottom saying 'stars will NEVER ask for your login details via email'.  just the card details then? right you are.
