Title: Reluctant update
Post by: RED-DOG on December 18, 2012, 02:15:48 PM
I've put it off for as long as I can. It's time to upgrade my phone. After doing a bit of research I've plumped for the Galaxy S3.

I think I got an OK deal - Phone + unlimited all network minutes / texts & 1gb of data. Thoughts?

Also, any opinions, advice, tips,  pro's cons etc for this phone would be welcome.

Try turning it on and off again if you have any problems.

Sigh. I suppose I deserve that.

I'm assuming you're an Apple fan boy Andrew?

Not an Apple fan boy as such just like the products for ease of use.
I'm a simple man with simple needs who wants everything done for him :)

In my personal opinion Apple hardware and software are absolutely top notch, and I almost went that way, but in the end I found them just too protective / exclusive / controlling.

Didn't say I don't hate Apple ;)

But seriously, the android platform has always suited my needs a lot better than the iphone (and I really dislike itunes). For others, an iphone would be a far better choice than android; and others would be happy with either.

If Tom's going for an android phone, then the SIII is probably the best choice (I'd say it's better than the One X unless you're going to use a modded ROM on the One X to get it to multi-task properly and get the most out of the processor - then the One X and SIII are pretty much identical and it's a case of which one you like the look of the most) at the moment.

I agree, not much to choose between them. The burst mode on the camera and the better battery life swayed it for me.

SIII has a removable battery - so you can buy a spare(s), which you can't on the One X - something I dislike about it.
Sky Go isn't (or wasn't) supported on the One X, it is on the SIII (I think).
SIII uses an SD card, the One X doesn't. Not really a big deal to be honest, but think I prefer the SD card route as it allows for future upgrading.

So why did I choose the One X?

Love the build of the phone.
Has the burst mode on the camera as well (if burst mode is what I think it is). In fact the camera is excellent imo.
The jump in processor power and speed compared to my previous android phones and other around is pretty significant.
I always install a modded OS on my phones, so the HTC v Samsung flavours of the OS didn't matter to me.
The SIII wasn't out when I got my One X :D

A good rule in life is never to buy anything you don't have to in December. I think this works with upgrades too.

Any deal you find this week will be a lot less in January I would say. I am due an upgrade but just cannot find a nice small handset that I like. I only want to make and receive calls and texts.

Seems like the industry have forgotten about customers who don't want browsers, music apps etc.

Did you get your screen sorted, how did you break it and how much did the repair cost?

Do you use a case or a 'bumper'?

My current phone has a place to attach a lanyard, I tried it for a couple of days and found I loved it. So secure, no dropping or peeps snatching your phone in the street. Also useful for pulling it out of your jeans pocket.

Unfortunately the S3 doesn't have a lanyard attachment point, but I will fit a bumper that has one.

Not got round to sending mine off to get the screen fixed yet, as I use my phone a lot for work and trying to get another one setup to do everything I need first before I send the One X away to be fixed.  Been too busy/lazy to get that sorted and thought it might be best to do it over Xmas or in the New Year.  In the meantime I'll just keep slicing my finger to bits.

I'd previously dropped the phone a few times, including once from head height onto tarmac.  The screen survived this abuse, and although the phone is well made, I'd also been lucky.

When I did the screen, I only dropped the phone from a bench - so less than two feet, but it fell onto a concrete floor covered in thin carpet tiles. I guess it landed 'perfectly' and from the sound it made when it landed, I knew the screen had been damaged.

If you're worried about doing the same to yours, I'd say a case would definitely have prevented my screen from going this time, but I prefer the phone without a case so was willing to take the gamble.

The SIII and the One X are the same size.  Both have much larger screens than the Desire I previously used, noticeably larger. But both are pretty slim and I don't know about the SIII, but the One X feels a lot lighter than the Desire. It does make a bigger bulge in my pocket though...

Tom,

Completely off-topic, but when I found that photo, being a saddo, I then read the article which accompanied it. Just curiosity getting the better of me.

Here is an extract from it. These guys speak a different language to you & me!

".....On our Linux routers which run carp on the LAN side we saw some flapping going on. On our load balancers, we saw messages about late heartbeat messages. We use failover Intel teaming on our web server NICs and saw errors about missing probes. The problem was wide spread enough that it seemed to be the switching infrastructure, however there were no significant errors in the switch logs. We did see some ASIC and interface drops, but the incrementing of these did not seem to always coincide with major network blips in our infrastructure......"

Sixteen mind-numbing paragraphs later, by which time my eyes were bleeding as if they had endured a whole Online Staking Report bulging with Stars HH's, they TIO&TIO. Which worked.

Gotta love that!

Just got the Samsung Galaxy Note 2 on EE, got the following deal

Unlimited Minutes
"          " Data
"          " Texts
2 Swappables
50 minutes to the U.S a month

£28.50 per month, I paid £30 up front for the phone and they were asking for £14 per month for insurance..

Brilliant phone, really happy with it..

(I should add, I've been with Orange/EE for 12 years and had some issues with being over charged with data recently)

Sounds like there's no solution for that one.  It's just the way the OS works now when the phone's attached to a windows PC via USB.

Quote

That might be down to the same issue.

My phone's rooted with a modded version of 'Jellybean', and I can mount the 'SD Card' (even though the One X doesn't have an SD card...) as a storage device, so wasn't aware of the issue.

If it helps, I mount sd card as a drive too, it comes up as an option when I plug the usb cable in.  I can't see the folders unless I do it.  Probably doesn't help but it's what I do to copy music across.

For the photos thing, I bet it's not much slower to just copy everything across into a new folder then delete the ones you don't want.  Not an ideal solution to what you need of course but it's an easy work around and it'd be easier to see photos properly from the thumbnail on the laptop rather than the phone.

Found a work-around for the photo's. Open them in Picasa and I can view them there. then just import the ones I want.

Found a work-around for the music files too but I'm not bright enough to explain what it was I did.

Next problem- Documents attached to emails.

When I download them I can view them once in the 'Downoads' folder. If I try to view them again after that, I get a message saying "This file has already been opened"

Yes I opted for insurance only because I managed to sell my old Blackberry for £150 so I subsidized the years premium as £14 per month for phone insurance is astronomical.

Yes you can connect the Phone via USB and view pictures as thumbnails.  I usually use dropbox to save my photos and if uploading them to my Mac I use an application called "Kies" which allows me to synch my phone to my Mac or TV over bluetooth.

The Samsung Galaxy S 3 is a great phone, you'll find the android software much more versatile then IOS which I've always found slightly rigid.

Okay it's £6.99 per month and covers against

- Accidental damage
- Liquid damage
- Abroad cover
- Theft
- Up to £100 of unauthorized calls
- Breakdown
- 48 replacement or if repairable they will do it within 5 days

It was £5.99 but I opted for £1 loss cover to, paid via paypal upfront for the year at £83.88

It seems like a good deal by a reputable company (AIZ are the parent company)

It was £5.99 but I opted for £1 loss cover to, paid via paypal upfront for the year at £83.88

It seems like a good deal by a reputable company (AIZ are the parent company)

I suppose it depends on your environment.

I've had several of the above problems but I spend a lot of time outdoors and I'm always climbing over / crawling under things.  I'm also quite forgetful, and I get wet often and fall over a lot.

In simple language, how / where do I type up a document and then save it so that I can retrieve and edit it or attach it to an email at a later date please?

www.dropbox.com would be a good solution.

Install it on your PC, install it on your phone.  Work on the document on your phone, it will be ready for you when you get to your pc.  Work on it on your pc, go out and about and then suddenly get a spare moment to send the email, do it from your phone, updated doc already on your phone.

In addition, you can use your dropbox as a backup solution for important files.

"Work on the document on your phone"

Firstly, where do I actually create the document please Simon? I need to open something to type on to.

Also, I assume dropbox is online, so I would need a data connection to access it? How does it work?

Can I save stuff on my phone, and if so how?

Probably a good time for someone else to take over on the advice but...:

To be able to work on it on your phone, you would need the software to be able to do it.  E.g. Microsoft Office.  If you don't have it, you phone will probably be able to view the document, but not work on it.  Not sure what is on your phone, but mine just lets me view or edit the docs that I pull up from dropbox.  It's a fiddle, but I can do the basic functions on the phone, insert a few numbers on a spreadsheet, re-wrtie a paragraph on a word document, etc, but never need to/tried to do any complex formatting when on my phone.

There is a nice little demo on the dropbox website giving an overview of how it works, but yes, you would need to be able to connect at some point.

There's probably better apps that others can recommend, but I used to use (before Dropbox) Astro manager as an app.  It would give you a file explorer system of folders much like you'd have on your PC and you can save work to your phone/memory card as you choose.  I don't use Astro any more as dropbox is a cloud solution with a decent enough file manager system built in.

When using email from my phone, I select "attach a file" and it gives me the choice of source, which for me now is usually dropbox.  I can attach the whole document, if that is what I wanted to send, or if for example I wanted to send a bunch of photos I'd just taken, then I could create a link to a folder with those photos in, and just send the url in the email.. in other words not trying to send a very large file.

Hope that helps.. if not, wait for Boshi :)

Yes it did help.

It would appear that I need some kind of office app for a start.

I looked at the dropbox vid. It appears really useful, although you couldn't put everything on there because there's a 2 gig limit, probably just the job for sharing docs or pics.

So could I upload a pic to dropbox and then paste the URL into a blonde thread?

Title: Re: Reluctant update
Post by: Simon Galloway on December 22, 2012, 09:02:09 PM
Absolutely.  I haven't done it very often, but even better, you coudl have dropbox set up so when you take a photo, it automatically gets saved to dropbox for you too.  (Saves having to upload them to your PC when you get home, they will already be on there)

The 2GB is quite a lot, and there are steps you can take to increase that limit for free too.

Couple of throwaway photos to give you the idea.  Recipients would be given that link, but would not be able to leap-frog from that folder into the rest of your dropbox.

I suppose it would make sense to re-size the images before you upload them. That way you would use less space and less data.

yea, I put that photo on Blonde earlier this summer.. was yummy too ;)

This time I just gave you the url so you could see what the link would look like to someone who received it from you via email.

One of the things that swung me towards OneX rather than SIII was they offered me 25GB dropbox for free.  Fat bastard I might be, but I don't eat that much that it would take 25GB to capture it anytime soon!  You can re-size if you want to, but for a lot of photos that have a limited shelf life, just delete them from your dropbox later if you run into capacity issues.

Yes but if you upload 20 2mb photos that's 40mb of data gone from your allowance.

Oh.. you are talking about data on your phone contract allowance?  Assumed most people had AYCE data on the latest phones or 1GB at least.

Google Drive is an alternative to Dropbox. Think it's 5gb free of charge, and then you can pay for more.

With Drive (and Dropbox I'd assume) you can tell it not to sync unless you're on wifi, so as not to eat into your allowance.

I'm trying to understand how email syncing works. (I have a Galaxy S3 but I assume it's the same for all smart phones)

I have my email accounts set to sync, and I have told it how often I want it to happen, but it doesn't sync automatically unless I also enable 'Sync' in the main settings menu.

The thing is, if I enable sync in the main settings menu it seems to sync everything all the time, i.e. calanders, notes, online photo albums (picasa).

Is there a way to just sync my email and leave the other stuff until I'm ready to sync it or is it sync one sync all?

If it is sync one sync all, how often does it sync, and what's the point of setting up sync frequency for my email accounts.

Lol. I hope this make sense. It's terribly difficult to communicate this stuff when you don't know what your talking about.

PS- Sync. (Just in case I haven't said it enough already.)

PPS- Yes I've tried turning it off and on.

PPPS- No advice from tikay please. Give the others a chance.

This next problem is much more difficult to explain but here goes...

Downloading photographs.

When I connect my phone to my laptop with a USB cable it gives me two connection options. These are:

Media device (MTP)

Camera (PTP)

If I connect as a Media (MTP) device I can go to: My Computer > GT-I9300 > Phone > DCIM >Camera and there I can see icons for my photographs. The problem is, I can only see them as icons not thumbnails, even when I select the 'Show as thumbnails' option.

As I understand it, this is normal when connecting as a media device, but it's a pain in the arse when you have to click on every icon before you can see what it is.

If I connect as a camera (PTP) I get the option of downloading pictures using Microsoft Scanner and Camera Wizzard. If I do that it says it has found 770 pictures, (although there are only about 50 in the camera folder).

I also get the option of using Picasa 3 to download the pictures. This works perfectly. It allows me to see the pictures as thumbnails and then select the ones I want to download. The trouble is, it's fine the first few time I connect, then, like the Microsoft Wizzard it finds 770 pictures and crashes. It wont work again until delete all the pictures from the phone.

What's more, deleting them by pressing the 'Delete all' button in the phones picture gallery won't do. I have to go to: My Computer > GT19300 > Camera tasks > Delete all pictures on camera.

Love,
Tom.

This sounds like a pain, and it appears to be a problem with the SIII and Windows.

Maybe the best solution is to copy all the photos from the folder on your phone to the Windows folder (skipping the ones that are already there), and then browsing them on a folder in Windows rather than on your phone.

Then you can keep the photos you want on your phone (and could even move them into a 'keep' folder, so you aren't trying to download these each time you connect to your PC), and delete the rest.

How are you copying them over, just 'drag and dropping' them?  I would have thought there'd be a way to skip all that are identical (same size, filename and date modified).

How many images are you talking about?  If it's only 50 - then copy them all over into a 'dump' folder, and then copy from there into the final destination.  That might not be too much of a hassle?

Can't find a way to skip identical files except one at a time.

Can't see another way except drag & drop, (Camera wizard sees 770 images).

Sometimes there can be ~ 200 images if I've been using burst mode.

I installed this app because I use turn by turn navigation quite a lot and the stock volume wasn't quite loud enough. It's also really useful to use the phone on the speaker as a 'hands free' when I'm driving.

The thing is, the app runs all the time unless to go into it's settings and force it to stop.

What I want to know is, is there liable to be a significant battery drain from this app if it's left running in the background?

I'd be more worried about it damaging my headphones/speakers.

You can go into your phone settings and see what's been using your battery.  It shouldn't be one of the main battery drains.

This is my battery usage (under Settings > Battery):

Thanks Bosh.

I was careful about speaker damage. I started at really low settings and increased them gradually. I have it set at 60% of it's max atm and it's ideal. My volume controls still work the same so I can turn it down in quieter situations.

Although the app seems to be running all the time (Shows up as ongoing is system tray) it doesn't appear in the battery usage listings.

Been thinking about this. The app is running, ergo is obv incurring some battery drain, but is it not showing up in the usage list.

Perhaps it is not configured in such a way that it shows up, or perhaps it's recorded as part of the 'Android System' or 'Android OS' readings.

It isn't actually doing anything most of the time.  Think of it as your TV remote control. You change the channel with it, and then until you use it again it's not using any battery power.

My phone has something called 'Clear OS' which is apparently some kind of content filter. It won't let me view certain sites, (2+2 for instance.) I can't find any settings for it, and I've tried turning my phone off and on.

Any ideas anyone?

Is it network related or phone related? I would have thought network and you can call them up to switch it off?

It's not a network thing. It won't even let me post the name of the site on here.

Sussed it. It's DTD's filter.

Have you tried switching it off and on again?

Actually, if you have a good 3G signal there, you can switch the wi-fi off whilst you browse the blocked sites, and then log-on again to the wi-fi after.

Tom did you get a Galaxy s III or a Galaxy III mini?

Who did you get it from and what monthly cost?

Did you have to pay towards the phone?

Got the s3. The mini is supposed to be the same spec but it's not.

I didn't pay for the phone. I get unlimited calls & texts and 1gb of data for £27 pm with Voda.

Thanks Tom. I can get exactly the same with o2 but they want £99 for the phone.

When I got my new phone O2 price matched carphone, might not apply cross network but worth asking.

Thanks pokerfan. I tried but no go. Tom's offer must be for existing customers as not shown on their website. Others offered free phone but monthly cost more so worked out the same. Got given extra GB for same £26 per month tariff. Bit the bullet and upgraded.

Would someone please try to walk me through the process of posting a photograph from my phone to the forum please?

Install the photobucket app.

Take a photo.

Upload it to your photobucket account (assuming you have one, if not, sign up via your PC and then log in via the app on your phone) - if you go to the gallery there is an option to 'share' and if you have the photobucket app that is one of your options.  Also you can open the photobucket app and then find the image to upload that way as well.

Take the link to the uploaded image in the [IMG ] [/ IMG] tags. and post that link into your post.

Hey presto!

Thanks Dan, But just before I attempt that, would Dropbox do the same job / be more useful?

Not really suited for this job.

I don't use dropbox, I favour Google Drive myself.  For images on forums, definitely photobucket.

If that's meant to be a photo of a nuthatch, then you've failed.
