Title: Nut toys you had as a kid
Post by: Woodsey on December 29, 2012, 12:32:51 AM
Was at my bro's house tonight for a few beers and spotted this mofo on his top shelf. Can't tell you the amount of pleasure we got from firing up this up as kids, no batteries or any of that shit just a bit of paraffin and pure steam power like the old days.

Ok fk, I'm deffo old now  :( ;tk;

We did wonder if we could run it off what we were drinking though   :D

I didn't really play with toys much once my old man opened the Snooker Club and I had my first PC too

I had a mini table at home, but once I was allowed on the full size ones at the club properly in 1989 I played that almost every waking hour. Dragging my beer crate around the table to stand on, so that I could reach the table properly. A couple years later the beer crate is gone and I'm playing for money every weekend 'Best of 3 for a bluey and the light'  :D

So jealous at the time, but happy times returned when he put those step things on the back wheel so I could get a croggy!

Like the poor man's chopper and without any gears.

I remember loving this, and playing until the adaptor was burning hot.  Think it is safe to see it didn't remain in pristibe condition.

Barry how could you?! You've brought it all horribly back to me!

I have the first premier league sticker book but it must have cost my poor mom and dad more than it did to get me through Uni. At one point, I needed about 8, including the top half of Peter Ndlovu. I had about 100 spares, including some 8 Pavel Srnicyzks and a dozen Phil Babbs.

I kept trying to convince people that the Phil Babbs were worth more so they were getting a good deal if they swapped one of theirs that I needed for multiple Babbs. They must be worth more...I've got them all!

In the end, mom and dad sent off for the last few and saved themselves any more heartache..."Another Phil Babb, mom!"

One year I was walking home from the shop checking out my new cards and I turned over the world cup, which was number 1 in the book, the rarest, and had that shiney gold material on it.

Greatest feeling in the world, I shall own the playground I thought.

Then a bird did a shit from above which landed right on it. Didnt mess up a single other card or my hands or nothing.

Some great things on this thread, especially the scaffold lol, me and my brothers would spend hours on a Sunday climbing...

Anyway here are a few of mine..

Raleigh burner - Best BMX ever, shared between 3 of us,
With the puncture repair kit obviously as the 1980's was a decade of construction we always seemed to get a nail in on of the tires
The vintage skateboard made even more famous after Back to the Future
And the Amstrad cpc 464, having to load games for 5-7 minutes each time we wanted to play seemed normal..

Manic Miner = greatest platform game of all time contender (suspect Super Mario Bros might have something to say about top spot)
...

agreed - but it's the sequel Jet Set Willy that's competing for second place, those Italians are some way down below some of the other Spectrum games

We used to spend days making the balsa wood ones and then putting tissue-paper over them and coating the whole plane in something highly imflammable called dope before attaching the jetex motor which either wouldn't ignite or blew up generally if launch was achieved and occasionally during said ignition.

Ages 14-18 lost to my amiga

Namely

Lemmings (completed)
Sensible soccer (and all subsequent releases)
Utopia
Robocod  - James Pond II
Bubble Bobble (completed)
Wings
Zool
Football Manager

And then on PC when I should probably have been chasing girls - Empire Earth!

The others are Beneath a Steel Sky, Syndicate and Chaos Theory.

Syndicate was actually a really cool game although I don't think anything can touch SWOS.

Penultimate is streets of rage, n'est-ce pas? I was always Axel and used to hit the controller of my friend's mega drive so furiously I'd accidentally hit the C button and the special backup enforcer would come in and clear all the baddies.

yeah I did, but I wasn't massively into girlie toys as a rule.

one i tried to find a pic of but couldn't (doesn't help that i can't remember what it was called) was an air stewardess thing that had a little cap and a carry case shaped like a plane where you could carry all the drinks and snacks for the passengers :)

my brother was big into spinners too - remember they were a massive craze and they had loads of tournaments around the place (outside sweetshops and things) where you could win prizes for doing the best tricks - think someone came to our school to give a demonstration as well.

reminded me of these, which were roughly around the same time I think

I knows, imagine me getting my pound notes out from my moth lined Farah slacks. I used to run at book on the FA cup at primary school and it was not as predictable as today's FA cup, teams like Wimbledon won for me making it a zero pay out and notes to burn. Just doing a service for the kids of Hayfield Primary who could not get on with the big 2! Of the day.

Mine was a 520ST, what's that one?

Its the Atari VCS

My favourite game was Pit Fall, although defender was good too.

I thought woodsey and Herbie would remember this as they are about the same age as me.  :)

yeah I just loved defender. This Christmas fav thing the kids have got is a version of tin can alley. Their heads  nearly explode everytime they shoot the gun and the can jumps in the air. It is only a cheap version but they love it.

Picked up sporting injuries already from playing Wii Olympics :)

Love it Lee, it looks amazing. This thread has got me thinking I may start to collect some of these old toys, the problem is the price. My brother has a decent electronic handheld collection and he would not let me have any of them when I went to visit over new year, I know he came back from Japan with a load but come on... They are in the shed just going to waste.

I blame the E numbers in 80's candy for my hyperactivity as a child, but I loved these bars... After having one of these I'd go out and climb the scaffolds on my street..  8)

(Highland bars were my second fav)

I'm waiting for Atkin to post up a picture of an ipad4.

For me I really remember these:

And finally the game that I played so hard as a kid (my mum bought me a sega mega drive almost straight after it's release):

My mega drive stopped working because I played it too much, every time I turned it on it would smell of burning.

Reminds me of my child hood a bit, but the console of choice for me was the supernintendo. I used to absolutely adore super mariokart and that game is timeless, even today that is heavily playable, which you can't say about a lot of games from back then. Shout outs to Zelda and the football game Striker.

Did also enjoy a bit of the Amiga console as well. It had sensible soccer on it and that blew me away. Had a ridiculous knowledge of European geography at like 7 years old because I knew Spartak Moscow played in Russia, so Moscow is in Russia. Was convincing my Mother then, that it was educational and this sorta thing really helped.

SNES > Mega drive ainec

+1, although Master System > NES, although very close imo.

Gameboy > any other handheld gaming device ever

Sensi Soccer and Micropose Golf where the two Amiga games that must have swallowed up the most of my times for 3-4 years. You could play people for money at them, sensi soccer had incred swerving and tatics, i wish they had a modern version of it now.

I can't believe I was 3 years old when the amiga sensible soccer came out. Must have been 4/5 years old playing that game, and I remember being good at it, rather than sort of not knowing what I was doing.

Definitely argue that this game and others i was brought up on created transferable skills, to what I do now with the pokers.

Would imagine too those that are really good at Call of Duty would be good candidates to transfer over to online poker, in terms of core skills of reactions and quickness of decision making. Obv so much more, but I think there is something in that.

scramble? You had a fire button and bomb. Trick was to time it so you dropped 2 bombs as you go over the mountain peak to take ot the first 2 rockets and then dive down to ground level and rapid fire the other rockets.

For space invaders let them come down clearing the houses and as they are just above you sweep from one side of the screen to the other timing your shots to perfection so you clear the full row

Asteroids just leave the hyperspace button well alone. Once you hit that sucker you are proper fecked :)
