Title: Pernickety
Post by: MereNovice on June 08, 2014, 01:52:13 AM
For a long time I've been irked by the way that times are recorded using the twelve hour clock once twelve hours has passed.
Times such as 12:30pm should obviously be 00:30pm.

I feel even more aggrieved when 00:30am is reported as 12:30am.

If we can't get it right during the first hour of the day we are truly screwed.

If I started a petition would I get any support?  Who should I address it to?

"am" and "pm" aren't used on a 24 hour clock (as far as I know).

You'd hate the clock on my oven Sir.  It's a 24hr clock and at midnight it reads 24:00 rather than 00:00.  Really not sure why.

I'm impressed that you are watching your oven at midnight.
I think we all need to be vigilant.

there is no such time as 24:00 or 00:00 which means there is a minute in the air everyday as a squaddie this was our online time of day or night of our own as we were paid by the day not the hour as that minute didnt exist it was me time

I  hate to inconvenience squaddies but ...
As you say, there is no such time as 24:00.
However, 00:00 is certainly a time and 00:00 to 0:01 is very much a minute.

Anyway, that is only distracting from the very real problem of people having (nearly) 13 hours on a twelve hour clock.

I realise that most analogue clocks/watches have the number "12" at the top of the dial rather than "0" but this is merely an obfuscation in the most serious matter of the reporting of time.

nope certainly no time as 00:00 clock should go from 23:59 to 00:01 but it cant or we would have to have leap days to correct it so instead we force a 00:00 into the 24 hour clock

I think that you're teasing me but I'll respond anyway.

A clock can display 00:00 as easily as 24:00 and probably more easily/sensibly. I believe most 24 hours clocks do this as standard anyway.

My bugbear is 12 hour clocks displaying times greater than 12 hours.

Leap years are a consequence of the earth's orbit around the sun taking (approximately) 365.25 days - this bears no relation to an arbitrary decision to choose 24:00 or 00:00.

Why would it be 00.00 when 12 hours have past already?

How, according to Mere logic, should midday and midnight be written when using numerals to represent a 12 hour clock.

Keep your reply simple please. I'm not at my best at this time of the morning.

Both midday and midnight would be 00:00 (assuming you are only recording to the nearest minute).

The first minute of the day is/should be 00:01 not 12:01 or 24:01.

I don't know of any clocks (or ovens) that show time as 24:01 so why should a twelve hour clock display 12:01?

Isn't the first minute of the day 00:20 here?

So if I wrote you a note asking you to meet me at 00.00 would you arrive during the day or during the night?

NB: No wisecracks about not wanting to meet me at any time please.

Sadly, it seems to be 12:20. :D

I wouldn't want to meet you at any time.

If you were operating on a 24 hour clock it would be during the night; if you were operating on a 12 hour clock it would be an evens shot apart from any factors I could deduce about whether you would prefer to meet me at midday or midnight.

That's all irrelevant anyway, 12:30 should be 00:30; I can see no logical argument against this. At best it's an antiquated reflection of analogue watches/clocks with the number 12 at the north pole.

To avoid confusion your note should say midday or midnight not 00.00

Nobody says midday. "I'll meet you at twelve-noon" would be more usual.

so at 12:30am/00:30, if I ask you the time what actual words do you reply with?
"half past midnight" or "half past twelve"

Good spot Lord Mondy.

Even MerePernickity & Red "About Time" Dog (decent punnage to be fair) will be stumped by that.

Sky TV have Shows that start @ 24.00, 25.00 & even 26.00

Stick that in their pernickity pipes.
