1  Poker Forums / Poker Hand Analysis / Re: [LIVE] AK against decent opponent on: July 11, 2012, 10:11:58 PM

If your a Teessider welcome. The aforementioned Greek Andy is in no way good at cash games or tournaments.

I'm guessing that all Greeks called Andrew automatically become known as Greek Andy in whichever cardroom they play/pub they drink in/job
But given that the blinds were 500/1k in level 5 it's quite likely this is Gala Teesside and this post gets a big +1

Posted on monday too, isn't it a £20 f/o with re-entry then too?

It's actually in Gala Leicester. This was from Saturday.
2  Poker Forums / Poker Hand Analysis / Re: WS $1k -3 nitty preflop folds, which do you agree with? on: July 11, 2012, 12:57:45 AM
  • 1. I usually fold here.
  • 2. Maybe you were incredibly right but I always shove.
  • 3. I think I'd consider calling and check/folding missed flops or shoving. I don't think I'm ever folding here though.

Obviously we all know that AK is an easy shove here. I'd guess that the maker of this thread knows that now too.

In the interests of being helpful to the OP what other hands are we raise/calling and what are we just jamming?

I can't think of any hands to raise/fold with given that oppo has 3 bet us quite a few times.

I know that I'm always calling, I was just prompting a few answers so that I could ask a few questions later on, which are mainly about the hands plan. When we look down at AK with ~17BBs is our main aim to get it all in no matter what the action before and after us is? Remember that there are antes as well.

In regards to my stack size, I'm very rarely raising with hands I can't 4bet/call a shove with from my position, even though sometimes a steal from there can be alright. I'm probably doing it with ~11% of hands here (which I think is actually pretty tight).

Hey everyone. This happened not too long ago against a player people know as 'Greek Andy'.

Format:

  • £20 MTT with 1 re-entry.

Stack size and blinds information:

  • We were in level 5 and the blinds were 500-1000 with a 100 ante
  • I was sitting in CO with ~17000
  • Andy was sitting in SB and had the second largest stack on the table (the largest was on my right).
Relevant player information:

  • I haven't got much history with him but from what I know he's a decent cash player but doesn't do amazingly well in tournaments.
  • He has 3bet me quite a few times but none have been more than 2.5x my initial open.

Action:

  • Action folds round to me. Hero in CO looks down at and bets 2000. Action folds round to Andy in SB who asks how much I have remaining (the dealer announces ~15000). He elects to raise and covers my stack x2, committing him to the pot. BB folds. HERO?

I know that what I'm about to say will most probably be completely shunned but could we ever shove in this spot? I know that I can name a few reasons why it's a possibilty, although I usually would take the bet/call option myself and then fold/check back any heart turn.

Pro It's inexploitable

Con: never giving the opportunity for opponent to spazz

Care to elaborate?

I know that the whole concept of this strategy is straight forward but I'm wondering if anybody could be nice enough to highlight it's pros and cons, preferably in detail.

Thanks. Smiley

yh don't like the 3bet pf, would prefer a fold but given how mitch is gong to open a ton of Kx's and Qx's I think flatting, even with an offsuit hand here is good.

As played bet/call or c/f the turn, I think chk/call is the nut low line as we let everyone else realize their equity, and make the river boarderline unplayable for ourselves turning a hand with decent value into a really tricky bluff catcher.

bet call turn for me.

What exactly do you mean "realize their equity"?
9  Poker Forums / Poker Hand Analysis / Re: Spot vs assumed nit on: June 25, 2012, 06:35:01 PM
Pre-flop: I would have considered betting a little more, especially at these limits live as so many players limp/call with suited connectors, weak aces and other average hands.

Flop: In a 4way pot I definitely prefer checking here as we're not often getting called by many worse hands. It's possible for him to check-call with a flush in this spot a lot of the time too. Thinking about it, what would you do against a raise?

Turn: As played, I'd call and reevaluate on the river. He's always going to be betting . If he has AT, A5 or A2 containing the then it sucks to be you. The thing is, if he's a nit then I doubt he's playing A5 or A2 offsuit so those two can be excluded from his range most of the time.

River: What river cards would you be calling and folding to?
10  Poker Forums / The Rail / How can you define what level you think at? on: June 24, 2012, 03:23:23 AM
I've heard a lot of people talk about it and somebody recently posted a thread which referred to it. Could anybody give me some sort of in depth insight please?
11  Poker Forums / Poker Hand Analysis / Re: Over playing AK? on: June 23, 2012, 10:58:36 PM
That's so typical, Dom. Haha. You're always one for bad beats. Tongue Minesh and the rest of the guys who play the £1/£2 with no max buy-in seem to have a crazy hand ranges. I think that they see it as a deceitful way of playing, meaning they believe that they disguise their hands well.

Pre-flop: I think opening ~2500 is fine in most cases, but I can see why you'd consider 3x. ZeroFive's point is pretty valuable though. Perhaps opening 3/4x here with hands like these could be more beneficial than I first thought.

Flop: I think you always have to be betting flops like this for protection. Realistically, most decent players would be protecting their blinds with some sort of holding, and I wouldn't call Minesh bad, so betting and reevaluating on whatever he does afterwards you would be my most favourite line.

As played though, do you think he's calling or raising you with a set here? It's something that would really cross my mind.

In this case, let's say you decided to bet and he decided to raise. I'd be more than happy to get it in, especially as his image is a relatively loose one and he could be holding a lot of Kx combinations (but very rarely K5 or K3).

Turn: This is a very tough spot being the player that he is. If he hit his hand then he's checking a lot of the time here because of how aggressive you've been, but then again if he's got a weaker K or hit his set on the flop then he's probably checking too.

I think that you're either shoving or checking back here. I prefer checking because if the river comes a non-heart (or maybe no Q, J or T) then you can usually get value of a weaker K (assuming he checks and you're ahead). If you did check behind then you could definitely call a river bet from him.

It's just a shame that he had that particular hand. Definitely a cooler.

1000 is a fine amount to raise generally here - the point is you don't want to raise to 1400 or something, have the shorty jam and get 3 callers, forcing you to see a 5 way flop with QQ.

I'm assuming you called with your QQ and won a nice big pot?

Didn't really want to post results (mainly because it makes no difference as to whether the play was right or not) but he showed JJ and spiked a J. Good job I didn't high five everyone though! Haha.
13  Poker Forums / Poker Hand Analysis / Re: [LIVE] QQ - tough spot on: June 18, 2012, 02:33:09 PM
Well Im hoping one of the reasons you made it 1k (or less) pre was incase the shorty jams his 2k in (making sure the betting isnt capped from behind - ie giving you the option to re raise any call/raise behind).

The guy (jammer) is the most aggro on the table. He is never jamming the lot with AA or KK, and may well spazz out with 99-JJ. Big suited aces form a big part of his range (AK AQ etc).

So on the grounds there is no hand in his range which beats you,  one hand you are flipping against, and the rest you crush, there is absolutely no reason to keep your chips out!

Yep, that's bang on. That is pretty much exactly what went through my head.

Just out of curiosity, what's a reasonable amount to be betting with pre-flop at this blind level? I thought 1000 was pretty standard.

Snap call, high five everyone in the room and holddddddddddddddddddddddddd

Haha. This is the first post on here which has actually made me laugh. Tongue Any thought process as to why?

Hey guys, this happened to me last night at Gala Leicester and I was wondering whether or not I could have made a different move.

Format:

  • £30 MTT with 1 rebuy or 1 add on.

Stack size and blinds information:

  • We were in level 3 and the blinds were 200-400
  • I was sitting in MP2 with ~18,000
  • Dom was sitting in CO and had ~2000
  • Spencer was sitting in the BB and had ~25,000

Relevant player information:

  • Spencer is known for being really aggressive. I've saw him make huge shoves at small levels with hands like AJ to small suited connectors. He usually plays the hands at the top of his range more calmly than he does others.
  • Dom is at the top of the league leaderboard by a good amount of points. So far, I've not tangled with him much but with his stack size in this pot I'm not at all concerned.
Action:

  • Action folds round to me. Hero in MP2 looks down at  and bets 1000. Dom in the CO shoves his remaining ~2000. BU and SB folds. BB shoves for ~25,000. HERO?
