Help please  Blondes.

Sheffield here I come next Weds 28th!

My lad has had offers from some Universitys and yours is one of them. This week we had Warwick and Birmingham so stayed at the Ricoh De Vere for £50 and played the £20 deep n steep at the G Coventry for some father/son bonding. It was a good laugh and he outlasted me in his first live event so I am up for revenge next week. Warwick Uni is top of the pops at the moment but he has heard computer science at Sheffield is also an excellent course and then the last one is St Andrews in Fife next month.

So next Weds night, which casino has the best value tourney for us with a Premier Inn nearby so I can have a few beers and drive back on Thursday?

This is not a mega bender really as he does not drink a lot and I am meant to be responsible. So no Lil Dave style antics this trip but would def have a few beers with any of you if you fancy. The wife was not over impressed with me semi degening him the other night on our very serious midlands Uni fact finding trip.

Also need a good Chinese or Indian eaterie for pre poker.

Would appreciate any local help.

Thank you.

Alex

Is the game on Grosvenor G's website.

Cash as Aaron says is the strongest in Sheff at Grosvenor, also if you enter the tournament you get 50% off bar food ordered before 9. Aaron often bangs on about the food there but I think he wants Michelin star for Mcdonalds prices! I eat there at least twice a week and loads of the cash players eat too i rarely see any problems with it. They have even started some Wetherspoons style offers but I am not sure what Wednesdays current offer is.

As people have said it all depends where you stay.

Jurys Inn/Travelodge/ and loads of Accor hotels are in the city centre. A taxi to G will be circa £5, taxi to naps nearer £10-14. Or you could possibly walk to Genting though there wont be many poker players there. I have eaten upstairs in Genting and it is pretty good, the Chinese leaves a bit to be desired. Better off going to somewhere like Wong Ting also right in the middle of town.
3  Poker Forums / Poker Hand Analysis / AA vs KK how to play? on: January 08, 2013, 04:52:09 PM
Sat night at G sat on 1 /2,

Im on the button. Player 1 is under the gun and Player 2 is to the right of me. I get dealt pocket kings, Player 1 raises to 10 Quid. Player 2 raises to 45. I make it 90 to go. It goes back to player 1 who pushes 104 all in. player 2 raises all in as well to 500. At this point my stack is 190. Basicaly im getting 3 to 1 to call.

Little background player 1 about 10 hands before this He and i were in a hand and he raised all in about 100 quid with AJos after i raised with to 30 with pocket 10's I folded and he showed his hand.

Player 2 was playing loose but i picked up a read on him. I was postive my read was good.

I figure that player 1 has something like A J AQ AK Maybe AA QQ. Im pretty much priced in to call him any ways its like 10 more to call him which is a no brainer. I figured that i had him beat. Even if he AA i would still end up making 100 quid off of player 2.

From the read i was getting from player 2 i figured he was trying to push me around. He might have pocket aces but i couldn't put him on that hand from my read even though he was representing that hand. So i call and guess what they both had. Pocket AA's both of them. No help from the flop turn or river. And im done for the night.

I figure i made the right choice due to my read on player 2. Player 1 wasn't really in the picture. Im not mad about this, just chalking it up to poker variance. What do you think?

Similar to what WIlliam Hill are offering on LFC to win the premier league this year! Wink

I am going to NYC in March for a week and may take a trip up to Foxwoods in CT if I can get the wife interested in seeing the countryside Wink

Anyone been there?

I learned so far It is far more important in Cashgames to really know the players you play. Taking mental notes is essential, even when you are not involved in a hand. This goes for any game, but esp. for CGs imo, as I always sit with 50% the max initially. Plus you just feel more comfortable on a Table when 50% of the players are looking like as fishes and you also have notes on the other 25% or so if they are regulars.

When to leave a table: This has been an issue for me. Usually cashgames-guidelines advise you to leave a table after 2-3 hours at latest, as you will get explored and your hourly rate will sink due to that. Also most players in lower limits are just really recreational, so they don't take notes of your plays and therefore don't exploit you as much, i.e. it can be really easy to pick up late on a Saturday night!

Is there much of a consensus as to which is the best poker site for a 1/2 level player that likes to sit down holding circa £150?
8  Poker Forums / The Rail / Re: Poker in Sheffield on: January 08, 2013, 04:25:39 PM
It would appear Genting have been forced to react already. There has been significant imrovement in G's schedule and Genting have reacted apparently. There has been a noticable increase in the amount of players in just the last week with knocked out tourney players then migrating to cash (where I can out fish them for a bit Smiley  )

You would have thought the new player in town would be trying to lead, but it appears they are followers. Not even any added or guarantees for their regular tourneys, which to be fair is what most people play.

http://www.gentingcasinos.co.uk/club/sheffield/poker/

I said that competition would help, but it seems Genting throwing money at us in September did nothing to gain any regular business. I am sure Grosvenor are happy to lose customers for one big comp a month a keep the players for the other 27ish days of the month.

Just seen this on their Facebook page.

Still prefer cash, but it looks like they are trying to out do Genting and Naps with fully dealer dealt, variable guarantees and early bonus chips...Could be tempted for the Monday comp if it gets many runners.

I wasn't expecting miracles, but going from mid thirties to mid twenties in only its first two weeks isn't great.

I think their card room manager has been a little mis-led in the power of some 'locals' dictating what they think they can achieve.

Andy said that G are looking at a £100 freeze with lower guaranteed players and a bonus add in to the pot from the Casino. Seems to make sense as all 3 places struggle to hit anything over 30 when the buy in is over £50.

What's the best curry house in Sheffield?

Shapla gets my vote but the walk down is a little more 'Gauntlet' than through town!

Seen as Trigg bumped this, I'll update and tell you that the £50r tonight got £5500 from 33 runners, definitely not bad for it's first week and a few names missing too, very respectable. It will get even a bigger PP after a few weeks too for sure & lands decently enough for GPS in a couple of weeks.

I went up last Sunday and it only got 22. Looks like Genting can't do what Naps and G failed at after all. Lets just admit it, Sheffield players are all talk and won't front up for a bigger comp game. I can only see it getting worse as we get nearer Christmas and people are saving their money.

I was talking to Andy and G's new schedule will revert to being more competitive with added etc more like when they opened and went after naps. Due for launch in Jan.

It got 28 runners on sunday and the pot was around £4650.

I was only going to play if it made 50 runners so left when It didn't look like it was going to get close.....

£20+ for a fillet steak is standard pretty much everywhere that has a health and safety certificate

http://www.scoresonthedoors.org.uk/business/napoleons-at-owlerton-sheffield-58447.html

http://www.scoresonthedoors.org.uk/business/g-casino-sheffield-331280.html

Both Napoleons and Grosvenor seem to manage it!

Usually Casino food is quite heavily subsidised in terms of profit.

Arguably the best non-starred restaurant in Sheffield is Morans     http://www.moranssheffield.co.uk/Dinner.html    £25.95 even there. But you don't have to add sides at £3 each!

I can live with £20 for a fillet too, I take it you've never been to Vegas? Or just stick to McDonalds when you're there....

You can't play much if you are still paying for stuff in Vegas Wink
