1  Poker Forums / Poker Hand Analysis / Can I fold a set here? on: July 07, 2008, 10:19:04 PM
I lost the hand history to this one somehow but I'll try to explain it. The game is 25c/50c on Ipoker (10 Man). I was sitting with just over $50 and the other player in the hand was just under $50.

I get dealt  and there is a raise before me (to $2) I call and everyone else folds the flop comes down

The other player bets out ($4 into a $4.75 pot) I call - Might be a mistake here. The Turn comes

He bets $8 I raise to $20 and he moves all-in - I call, he shows JJ and more than less stacks me. Bottom set on this board? Is there much that moves all-in at this level that my hand actually beats? The only reason I ask is that I had a strong feeling that the guy had a set but could not bring myself to fold this - I am right to call in this spot?
2  Poker Forums / Learning Centre / Re: AKs, mildly dodgy board, easy call? on: May 07, 2008, 02:59:18 PM
I find this kind of hand confusing at the same limits. When people flat call the flop then make a big raise on the turn it just screams set at me. Then again I really need to learn not to be a nit. Most people seem to believe that a call here is +EV so I will be calling the next few times I come up against this situation (even if I have to force myself) and keeping a record on how I do. I have no doubt this is profitable I just need to prove it to myself *lol*

Thanks for the replies as always. Trying to learn to play this game properly is a lot hard than I first thought *lol*

I'll keep trying though
4  Poker Forums / Learning Centre / Re: Am I being too weak here? on: May 07, 2008, 01:46:10 PM
Yeah OK. Thought this had to be wrong - think I currently have a leak in my game where I play too tight in general and I had already lost two big pots with JJ to bigger pairs that night (yeah I know ROT)

To answer mondatoo, the reason I called was that I really thought he had AA or KK and thought I would stack him if I hit a set. Impiled odds are clearly there although after reading the advice from you guy's I realise this was probably very flawed thinking by me.

So we are saying it +EV to get it all-in with a good overpair in most situations are these levels? Is it also +EV to get it all-in on the flop when AK hit's TPTK. I know it partly depends on the player but everyone seems to play the same at 10c/25c the default option on this kind of board with a hand like JJ or QQ should be push right?

Thanks for the advice by the way this learning board is so useful.

Hand I just played - basically had no information on Jans77. He had not been in many hands and I just find at these limits (the only ones I know, and I have not played for long) re-raises are usually at least KK. Just want to check with some more experienced players as this does feel weak.

There is nothing I can do here is there? After he called the flop I was slightly concerned but I have to put in a big bet on the turn don't I and after he raises I have to call right?

7  Poker Forums / Learning Centre / Re: Playing a set - Ipoker 25c/50c on: April 25, 2008, 08:24:00 PM
Thanks Guy's

I was wondering if I should have done what Kinboshi suggested and just flat called and then gone for the raise on the turn. That way I might get more money out of a hand like AQ?

If he had say AQ, KK or AA does my check raise give away the strength of my hand and let him get away sometimes? Also he could bet again on the turn as another continuation bet?

I do only have bottom set. That is really strong on the flop but would not be so good if he checked behind me on the turn and made a big bet on the river. Is that kind of thinking to "nitty"

Hi All

Playing 25c/50c on Noble Poker. Unfortunately don't know how to get the hand history but I just had this hand and wondered if I played it right.

I am the small blind sitting with $52.20
MP1 has $50.75
Cut off has $45.50

I am dealt three diamonds three clubs

MP1 Raises it to $2
Cut Off calls
I call

Flop Comes

Best flop I can really ask for with my hand.

I check as I have seen MP1 continuation bet before (is this a mistake?)
MP1 bets out $4.5
Cut off calls

I raise to $15
Both fold

I suppose I should be happy with that return but do I miss value here as I know MP1 is aggressive and might well have bet out on the turn as well?

Hi Guys

Question for all you experts about low limit hold 'em and suited connectors. I have only just started playing online and have done OK - broken about even on my first week (well just a little down actually) but I seem to be losing most money on drawing hands like suited aces and suited connectors when I flop the draw.

I am playing just 10c/25c at the moment whilst I try to build a bankroll. I think by reading some previous posts I have figured out I have been overplaying the suited aces and suited connectors in early position where I have been limping in and calling a raise. This is probably wrong as I end up check calling and it's either obvious when I make the flush/str8, and put in the big bet or I miss and lose the pot.

But what is the best way to play them in position? Are they even +EV at this level (surely they should be), is it entirely dependant on your opponent. I get the fact I need to have implied odds so stack sizes are important but whenever I hit I don't seem to be getting paid off. I assume I am doing something wrong here, although I know I am talking a very small sample size. But I still feel I could use some advice on this kind of hand when I flop the draw.

I my better off raising on the flop with the nut flush draw or just calling and trying to make my hand as cheaply as possible?
How do I decide if I have the odds to call a bet on the flop and turn.
If I make my hand I have to bet - how should I size the bet (I have pretty much been just betting the size of the pot)

Thanks again for your help

1. Ignore Kinboshi

2. Play on Blonde

3. Win millions

Sound guidelines...   Smiley

Win Millions?? Good idea - I will do that *lol*

btw - didn't know about the learning centre. It looks real good for new players

Thanks for the replies and the advice :-)

I want to play cash games mainly, but would like to play in the odd Multi table tournament as well. Only the very low buy-in multi table tournaments though. I will probably be putting in about 10 hours a week to start with (just a couple of hours each day after work). Plus a bit on the weekend if I have the time. I might end up playing a bit more than that after a while but not for the first couple of months.

I like the sound of the loyalty scheme and would welcome a PM about it - I have heard of them before. I have downloaded the Blonde software and have been watching some of the games. I'll probably try out the software by playing a freeroll or something but it looks good.

As far as bankroll management goes I'm going to start off at 25c/10c which should give me enough protection against variance right (not to mention beginner mistakes)? Then I want to give myself the target of getting to $1250 before moving up to the next level and follow the rule that you need 25 buyins to move up to the next level. I assume that is a sensible way to go as a lot of good players (including Tikay I think) have recommended this.

I'll have a look at cardrunners as well, thanks for the advice on that.

As for the hand analysis section I definitely be using that and I won't get at all offended if I get some harsh responses. I expect I will deserve some of them but if it helps my game its welcome. I won't be taking offense *lol*

Thanks again for the response and the welcomes. Look forward to chatting with you all in maybe playing at the tables with you in the future.

If can can just ask one more question I have a few magazines and they seem to recommend some poker software, poker office and that sort of thing. I have looked at their sites and understand how they work - does anybody think these actually help your game?

Hi Everyone - First post here

I'm new to this forum and online poker (and really poker in general) and I am looking for a bit of advice and help and I am told that this forum is the best place to get it !!

I have only really played games with my mates before but have got good results and wanted to give poker a "proper" try.

I have a bankroll of $1000 to start with and would like some advice on the best way to proceed in trying to become a winning player. I will probably have to post some hands in the hand analysis section. I would like to learn to play cash games, can anybody help me with the best site to play on and how I should start out?

Hope some people can make suggestions.
