New player asking for help
«

April 05, 2008, 12:44:35 PM »
Hi Everyone - First post here
I'm new to this forum and online poker (and really poker in general) and I am looking for a bit of advice and help and I am told that this forum is the best place to get it !!
I have only really played games with my mates before but have got good results and wanted to give poker a "proper" try.
I have a bankroll of $1000 to start with and would like some advice on the best way to proceed in trying to become a winning player. I will probably have to post some hands in the hand analysis section. I would like to learn to play cash games, can anybody help me with the best site to play on and how I should start out?
Hope some people can make suggestions.

First of all...
to Blonde.
The main piece of advice I would give is to keep an open mind when posting hands in the analysis section. The replies may seem a bit harsh at times, but if you look beyond the 'harsh', you'll find there is some very good advice.
As for the rest, well...I've been told we're always learning and nobody will ever know all there is to know about the game. Some are exceptionally great, without a doubt, but never perfect. Practice by playing small stakes sit n go's, tournaments or cash. Don't move up until you've had a consistent record of wins at your starting level.
Good luck with it and be gentle on your monitor. After all, it did press the 'call' button. Oh yeah, one last thing. Bad beat stories will cost ya 50p around here, so be sure it's worth it before you post it.

Welcome to Blonde
About the sites to play on. I would suggest getting a site where you get some sort of rakeback (or loyalty scheme as Kev likes to call it...I'm sure you'll get a pm from Kev about the Blonde scheme soon)...simply because it means that if you break even over a month you still make a profit. There is no reason why you should get some sort of rake back deal.
How many hours a day/week are you thinking of putting in and what times are you going to be playing? Blonde (and other i-Poker sites) have decent traffic at most times but Party poker and Full tilt poker have more. I would suggest that you stay away from Pokerstars if you play cash simply because the standard of play there is the highest by some way.
Stick to your bankroll. If you have 1k$ you can not play 1-2$ cash. Bankroll management is everything if you want to be a long term winning player.
use the handanalysis thread and learning centre on blonde a lot..plenty of good players here willing to give advice (even more bad ones like myself though
I would also consider using the card runners site as that really seems to be the poodles peanuts when it comes to improving your strat and skill.
Best of luck to you

Thanks for the replies and the advice :-)
I want to play cash games mainly, but would like to play in the odd Multi table tournament as well. Only the very low buy-in multi table tournaments though. I will probably be putting in about 10 hours a week to start with (just a couple of hours each day after work). Plus a bit on the weekend if I have the time. I might end up playing a bit more than that after a while but not for the first couple of months.
I like the sound of the loyalty scheme and would welcome a PM about it - I have heard of them before. I have downloaded the Blonde software and have been watching some of the games. I'll probably try out the software by playing a freeroll or something but it looks good.
As far as bankroll management goes I'm going to start off at 25c/10c which should give me enough protection against variance right (not to mention beginner mistakes)? Then I want to give myself the target of getting to $1250 before moving up to the next level and follow the rule that you need 25 buyins to move up to the next level. I assume that is a sensible way to go as a lot of good players (including Tikay I think) have recommended this.
I'll have a look at cardrunners as well, thanks for the advice on that.
As for the hand analysis section I definitely be using that and I won't get at all offended if I get some harsh responses. I expect I will deserve some of them but if it helps my game its welcome. I won't be taking offense *lol*
Thanks again for the response and the welcomes. Look forward to chatting with you all in maybe playing at the tables with you in the future.
If can can just ask one more question I have a few magazines and they seem to recommend some poker software, poker office and that sort of thing. I have looked at their sites and understand how they work - does anybody think these actually help your game?

Welcome to Blonde you seem to have the right attitude towards starting as a poker player.
For cash just about every medium to large site is going to have enough traffic to play small stakes. I would recommend you find somewhere which has rakeback (loyalty scheme) and reasonably soft games. I would avoid the main us sites as the standard is higher there (ftp and stars).
As for bankroll I think Boldie might be joking about playing 1/2 off $1000, well I hope he is. Starting at 10/25c sounds fine you are in theory rolled for 25/50c just but no harm in being overolled imo.
Regarding tools there are masses of aids out there varying from close to essential (Poker tracker/ Holdem Manager/Poker Office) to useless. I should probably put a list up in the learning centre, shouldn't I, mods is this allowed?

See I don't get to see/be involved in general mod chat and blonde has changed its policy to 3rd party links at least once or twice since I have been on here. So I was asking permission. Links to my all my favourite sites will be up soon, lol.

Members are no doubt all too aware of the numerous incidences of blatant spam which take up a significant amount of our time to deal with. Many of you also take the trouble to report these posts to us, for which we are grateful.
However, in addition to this there are many posts made which include links to external websites of various types, including other poker fora, blogs, and other poker and non-poker related sites.
Generally, we allow links to other poker fora such as 2+2, as these are usually made to draw attention to a topic of interest or to provide reference or guidance to another member. With regard to other site links, our decision to allow or remove a link is largely based on whether the linked site is seeking to gain commercially from the link being there. This includes, but is not restricted to, affiliate sites and sites which compete with blonde and/or its paying sponsors. This policy is also intended to protect blonde members, particularly those new to poker, from innocently activating affiliated links without their knowledge.
We also ask that members do not copy content directly from other websites in their posts without proper accreditation being given to the source.
