1  Poker Forums / Poker Hand Analysis / Meh spot...early stage in live tourney against tough reg on: June 28, 2011, 02:00:09 PM
Live £50 freezeout at G, earlyish level, 200/400/25, avg stack 15k

Good tough reg with avg stack who has been pretty active at table opens UTG+2 to 850. I look at a pretty   in mid position and make an optimistic call, knowing that most at this table don't want to get into pots with this guy. Heads up to flop

He leads out for 1100 into 2325. I think he knows I am raising here almost 100% the time with a flush draw, so I call...

Turn is

He leads again for 1100, his flop bet to me could be anything, this bet feels weak but that could be a trap...Aces are only a small part of his range, he knows Im just as likely to defend with 78s and would float that flop...so I call here with 2 pair and flush draw getting 3:1....I was tempted to raise here now, but in case he does have the A9 or whatever, I have some outs so dont mind just calling...

River is  , he bets 4200 this time which seems a much more confident bet...on the turn Im hoping he has a weak ace and I make the concealed flush, on the river I really want to believe my 2 pair best kicker are good...not sure what he puts me on but he eitehr really wants the call on the river or really wants me to fold, I can see him playing any pocket pair this way, TJ, any king any ace..given how hand played does it seem like its a straightforward fold or not?

also confused why the title says set mining?!

Set mining because most at table know I would be raising most pairs but limp complete junk...so it gets more in the pot...OOP against one or two who will get me off nines on any scary board so I dont mind limping...

Our Hand

Pretty average table 1/2 live NLHE, 9 handed. Straddle is on and flop is seen 6 handed, I limped along early position with nines. Stack is about £400, only one player at table even remotely has me covered.

Flop is

Blinds and straddler check and I bet £18 into £24 pot. Pick up one caller (button) and everyone else folds.

Turn is

I've played a few pots in my time with villain (pretty much a fish at this table) fairly weak passive/station. I check the turn and they bet £22 into £60 pot. They have about £150 behind. I just flat call.

River is

I check pretty quick and they auto ship pretty quick. Have I butchered this hand, am I winning ever, or is this pretty standard?

Raise pre has got to be +EV? (Along with a compulsory "Ahve goat tae punish tha limpers!" speech...ahem)

If I raise pre I have a harder time getting away than here; I'd just looking to get to a cheap show down....a lot of people diss "information raises" but it surely calls for it here to save the two stacks behind getting odds to tag along, not going to get any info if just get cold called by anyone sitting behind, but if SB was leading a   on the flop he might try and get more in on flop? I don't win much tourneys...I'm either going broke here or playing scared till the river...thats why I prefer to put up maybe another 600 preflop to take down the 1000...

Is it wrong to say I was trying to look like I was out of line? Tongue

I always shove river here just because the check calling to me looks like a non believer and the river bet smells of a blocking bet, I always think if they thought they were good that far then they will pay off.....but I guess it should be a case of I've won enough or I've lost enough......cheers for the advice.

FWIW, got 2 outered! Only reason I ask...

First hand at this table, looking at stacks I have chip lead so decide to open to build up PFR, dream flop...are you going for more on the river ever?

Pretty damn good, although it reminds me too much of every night in poker for me (minus the binkage)
