When i watched this, It seemed as though daniel knew he was beat on the river when gus pushed in but just had to call to see it. After all the betting, gus is still willing to go all in on the river, he isnt gonna be doing this with a striaght, he would have lead at the river, he isnt pushing with the naked 5, he isnt doing it with an overpair. If I didnt already know that there was $540k pot taking place i would have thought neagranu would have laid it down on the river

i was pretty surprised Gus checked.. it gave daniel a great chance to not get his whole stack in the middle. If DN has a straight, checking lets him bet and fold, and sometimes check behind. If Gus leads the river, then daniel calls with the straight or maybe folds, so leading probably wins the same/maybe more if DN has the str8 (compared to checking) because its not like he is calling a c/r with just the straight.
the key though (as far as I can see) is that if DN has a boat, I really really doubt he just calls the river, so Gus leading into him is a real strong way to get DN committed for his stack (by raising) whereas with the river c/r it just comes across as so strong it gives Negranu a real good shot at folding, for all the reasons Pab alluded to in the post above.
I guess people might say "well if he checks, he lets DN bluff the river".. which might well be true, but how often is DN not going to have a hand with showdown equity here given the action pre/flop and turn..almost never is the answer.
Naturally its easy to be an expert with the hole cards in view, but the check just kinda felt wrong when I first saw it, and it still feels wrong now
