Last night, there are 16 players left in the tournament and my table breaks as we re-group to play two tables. I've been going well by my recent standards (!)...225,000 chips in play..I have 20,000 plus.

The table I am placed on contains most of the chips. I have two stacks of 30,000 plus either side of me.

The blinds are going up every twenty minutes, and are in the region of 800-1600 as we re-start

And then the cards go completely cold...I try a steal and BB re-reraises. I get to see a flop with nothing in the BB and come nowhere near the board, stacking to a lead out bet.

Two small stacks double up on AA and KK.

Soon I'm getting blinded away but we are down to 13 players. Opportunities are difficult to find. People are folding or going all-in. My calling hands are being made redundant. Without doing a thing I am in the last ten. Second shortest stack. Then the short stack steals twice, cards unseen. I'm short stack. 10,000 chips...blinds are 1500-3000

I do not want to miss out, but have no cards and no possibilities of seeing any cheap flops

Your advice?

I know what you mean, I've often been in this situation and had to try and squeeze into the money (see my posts on playing with a short bankroll) and usually make it to final as short stack rather than go out on the bubble. if there's one more to go before the money and you're last you're right to hold out as long as possible because two medium stacks could clash with big hands. you do have to draw a line somewhere though. I always say to myself I will not go below a full pot raise (7xSB) if I do first hand with ANY value (ie and Ace, two cards 10+, connectors suited or not) I make my move. if yu do it while you still have a full raise you're going to do some damage if someone calls and you win. You're going to be out on the bubble occassionally. someone has to be.

I was. With <10SB left i found an Ace/5 suited, moved in and the big stacked BB called with Ace/higher kicker. Thank you and goodnight. Wanted to wait for something better but was going to be in the blinds next hand so it was now or never....

Sometimes when you can see yourself getting short stacked around bubble time its worth thinking that either your gonna win the tourney by making a few moves or your going out. I tend to find that if the bigger stacks sense your trying to squeeze into the cash they'll simply run over you.

exactly the kind of hand I mean. A5 suited with 8000 chiips when blind are 800/1600 isn't a bad move if there's no-one else anywhere near as short. If not you've got maybe one more round at a push to find better that that.

been in this position many a time

and have decided not to be in this position ever again

I'm pushing in position or no action with an M of 5 or under with lterally any 2,it often backfires but feels better than blinding away..

lets face it with a M of 2 or under as Dan Harrington would say your are in the dead zone, even if you do double through you are still up shit creek...

but im guessing you know all this mr Tighty...I bubbled last week, but was over the moon when my push was called as i had live cards..couldnt ask for more than that...

it's the

without doing a thing
part of your post that concerns me. You didn't not do a thing..you folded your way to the last ten and left yourself with 3 BB's. Surely there had to have been an unopened pot when it came to you at some stage? Why did you not push there? You let yourself get blinded away because you didn't want to go in without a hand, (didn't have the chutspa to just close your eyes and move your chips in the middle and steal, some would say). You left yourself with no FE and then you pushed with ace rag..just about the worst hand in the world to push with (though admittedly when you only have 3 BB's it doesn't matter what sort of hand you have)

Your chips should have gone in several times before you got to that stage..doesn't matter what your cards were.

You say you are in a good position chip wise but you still only just have 10 bb's.

What do you want out of the tournament? To sneak into a money position at the final table or the chance to make top 3 and decent payout to buy in?

My opinion in a crapshoot tournament that you are playing then you cant sit back and wait for decent cards - get agressive or die trying.......... but then i'm going for a top 3 finish
