What.....But I Fell......

Hi,

My girlfriend gave up smoking on boxing day, and since the 27th she has had nicotine patches.

Over the last week she has suffered bad nightmares.

I have searched the internet for side effects of patches but it mentions nothing of nightmares etc......

I did point out to her that it could be withdraw symptoms of the chemicals that were in the cigs?

Have any of you guys that have given up recently suffered from this?

Thanks
Steve

The very last hand of the night goes to Dewi James, who finds ACES and talks Raymond O’Mahoney into calling his all-in preflop bet of 15k.  “If I had AQ, I’d call!” says Dewi.  Raymond calls holding pocket 66’s.

Nicotine Withdrawal

When smokers try to cut back or quit, the absence of nicotine leads to withdrawal symptoms. Withdrawal is both physical and mental. Physically, the body reacts to the absence of nicotine. Psychologically, the smoker is faced with giving up a habit, which requires a major change in behavior. Both must be addressed in order for the quitting process to work.

Withdrawal symptoms can include any of the following:

-dizziness (which may only last 1-2 days in the beginning)
-depression
-feelings of frustration and anger
-irritability
-sleep disturbances, including having trouble falling asleep, staying asleep and having bad dreams or even nightmares -trouble concentrating
-restlessness
-headache
-tiredness
-increased appetite
These symptoms can lead the smoker to again start smoking cigarettes again to boost blood levels of nicotine back to a level where there are no symptoms.

If a person has smoked regularly for a few weeks or longer and abruptly stops using tobacco or greatly reduces the amount smoked, withdrawal symptoms will occur. Symptoms usually start within a few hours of the last cigarette and peak about 2 to 3 days later. Withdrawal symptoms can last for a few days to several weeks.

This may sound daft, but if she could just try quitting without the patches, she'd find it really easy. The Patches just make the yearning worse.

3 days & she'd be through the worst & if she "brainwashed herself" she would quit without ANY pangs at all. It really IS that simple.

Tell her to stop using them - that's the best advice you can give her!

I disagree.  I battled with smoking for 20 years and managed only two sustained periods off them (including the 4 year stretch I'm on now) Both were with the help of patches. different patches affect different people different ways. try 16 hour patches as opposed to 24 hour ones, try different strengths and different brands. All patches do is provide a crutch while you change your habits. doesn't really matter how you do it but no two people are the same when it comes to kicking an addiction.

personally never had nightmares but I got skin irritation from some brands.
