I'm currently living in rented accommodation during the week as I'm working away from homw (Dublin).

I understand that we're on a DEMON Business 500 package with a 512k link and a contention rate of 50:1. Its an absolute joke of a package but generally it works okay in the middle of the night.  Roll Eyes

I investigated this new 24MB line for £24 that some broadband company is rolling out! Now if this ever gets going then there won't be any more problems now will there?

In Ireland the telecoms industry is about 3 years behind the UK in terms of supply & speed. Eircom (similar to BT in that it used to be the state run telecom entity) is pulling faces everytime its asked to allow competition into its exchanges. At the momemt we have a 2MB line which costs €54 a month then on top of that you've got your phone 'rental' charges. All in all its costs me €100 a month to indulge in broadband. I could spent £30 a month in the UK and get the same service!

Well a 24mb line might be nice, but contention on that could be an issue, and of course it all depends on whether your line will pass the test to take that sort of throughput. Just because it was cleared for 512, doesn't mean it will for 24meg. Also you have to take into account how good the actual company is - if their service is dropping all the time, you can have as much bandwidth as they say on the tin, but it's no use if you can't get online Smiley

You'd hope that Demon would have infrastructure to run a business line with nop issues, but historically their connections to hub areas of the web have been sketchy at the very least.

I'd make sure you have a dial up as an absolute last option, and jump on that if you have to Smiley

Here endeth the sermon Smiley

I was just wondering....

I have a plant in my garden that has a thin stem, purple buds and speckled white leaves. About two feet tall.

I didn't plant it, but it looks very pretty

do you know what it is?

only asking, because it seems there's nothing you DON'T know.....

Can you not get NTL in Dublin? NOt a company I'd normally recommend (and I used to work for them) - but if Eircom are at it - they might be your alternative.

Rod,

Mark is very correct about the archaic situation in Eire - Eircom has a stranglehold ont he place. My friend who has recently returned there from a stay working here with me regularly screams in instant messages to me about the fact that he is sat on a crap connection because Eircom are taking the long long long route to get any kind of infrastructure on place, and they won't let anyone else get in there either.

I know the company I work for would love to be able to get their meaty little mits on the broadband scene over there, but they won't allow it.

Tragic really when you think of all the high tech firms that are out there.

As for the plant Tighty, I have no idea - if it's pretty call it what you want  - it's your plant Smiley

Am i right in thinking that 24meg broadband is 48 times faster than 512k broadband?

Theoretically - it should be - in practice it won't be.

Contention ratios (who you share the pipe with) will get in the way, and also remember that you point your browser at a web page, and it won't always be able to give you the informationa s fast as you can actually receive it.

I'd check your bill for eircom broadband Mark, I only pay 39 + vat for the 2mb line. Still extortionate compared to uk prices though.
