It would depend on the song, the quality of your audio setup/mp3 player (ipods apparently being quite bad) and your speakers/headphones.

I can tell the difference between CD and some mp3s (as well different bit rate mp3s).

Also if you've got the flac why would you want to downgrade it? In future it's more likely that you will be able to tell the difference.

How can anybody tell the difference between a decent quality recorded mp3 and a flac file???
Especially if you are using something like an ipod.

I am using Itunes to play through my headphones at home, not for my ipod.

Well i know someone with a 70k hifi, and when we play high bitrate mp3s we cant tell the difference, the reason i woul dprefer it would be down to file size, no other reason.

I can tell the difference on 70p headphones, it does depend on the song though, and your ears to some extent.

Flushy - from what I have read it seems if the earlier xiph link doesn't work for you then you're just going to have to wait for apple to get off their arses and add it. (or try a decent media player Wink)

It all depends on the source of the material and how its decoded, if done correctly it is near impossible to hear the difference.
