KK Played badly?

£30 freezeout, 8 k starting stack we have been very quiet all night played very few pots as table was fairly loose early doors didnt want to get involved too early with non premium hands. After the break level 4 blinds are are 300/600 a tightish player makes it 1800 to go - this guy hasn't been involved in many pots but the ones he has been involved in he had Aces once and AKs, I think his game is fairly basic and happy only to play big aces and big pocket pairs. I repop it upto 4300 with
flop comes down 5 6 9 rainbow, I'm in the bb and decide to check hoping to induce a c/bet from our foe so we can fire back over the top for our last 5k he checks behind (mission fucked) and the A hits the turn. I check again and so to does he, he was playing with chips looking like he was ready to put in a bet and there was a glint in his eye screaming he had an A when it came down. so we ended up checking down and he shows me AQo - the range of hands I am putting him on where TT+ AJo + as I said he was a realy tight player, was my play of checking the flop a bad one? Should I just have got my chips in and let him make the hero call (I don't think he calls a bet tbh with the AQ since he missed flop) Although I would have expected him to take a stab at the pot on the flop with that or is c/betting just not in his make up?
In hindsight I think I played the hand pretty badly, I think the line I took works against a more competent player as I am sure most players holding anything in the range I ascribe to him are making a play once I check the flop. Although I am thinking if he has TT, JJ, QQ, he calls on that flop, I suspect that if he had AA or KK maybe even AK he pushes back at me preflop.

I'd have bet the flop as if he did have a strong ace, I wouldn't want to give him the chance to catch it for free. There are times I would check, but this isn't one of them.

Normally i would take the same line mate, but given that he was initial bettor preflop I kinda hoped he would take a shot at the pot on the flop. A baws, i messed it up pure and simple.

I bet this flop. You've re-raised to show strength, and the check screams AK-AQ-AJ, basically you've missed this flop. The info you've given us ("his play is fairly basic") kinda tells me that he'll be happy to check behind as well, so I probably shove, as you appear to have got half your stack in preflop, get the rest in now!

There was me thinking he did it because he has KK!

any chance of stacks mate?
As played I just iinstashove the flop and try to look nervous. If your playing 8k and make it 4.3k to go then your hand is practically faceup so a shove pre may have been better. if this fella is as tight as you say then his opening and shove calling range probably arent too different

Stacks fairly even he had around 10k I had slightly over 9k at this point.

I think you know yourself that the flop check was a balls up. You have "been very quiet all night"...so your image is rock solid...and then you suddenly wake up with a small, but still half-your-stack-kinda re-raise, against a tight player who has only shown big pairs.
I'd say checking the flop to conceal your obvious strength in the hope our tight friend now goes crazy and pushes into the pre-flop re-raiser is a poor strat. Your remaining stack is less than what's now in the middle so you have to push.
