life does not mean 6 years. The judge did not sentence him to life.  This is poor reporting (which no doubt will be picked up by the tabloids)

Quote
Sentencing, Mr Justice Simon passed an indeterminate sentence for the protection of the public. He ordered Spence serve at least six years behind bars before he be considered for parole

Quite different from a "Life" sentence.

http://www.hmprisonservice.gov.uk/adviceandsupport/prison_life/lifesentencedprisoners/ (Although it is under the "life sentenced prisioners" heading that is quite clearly not where it belongs if you read the piece. It is under there because "technically" it could mean life.)

I know...that's why it's not a "life" sentence.

I thought it was a sentence of at least 6 years before he would even be considered for parole?

A life sentence merely means that whenever you are released (whatever the term) you are basically on probation till you die, if you fail to live a crimefree life you can be returned to continue a sentence.

Most life terms come with a recommendation from the judge which is almost never overturned (i think only the home secretary can), so you can get a life sentence of 12 years with a rec of 8 which means you are not eligible for parole for 8 years (you NEVER get parole at the first attempt btw).
But you commit a serious crime at any point in the remainder of your life you continue the sentence where it was interupted.

In bygone days recs were huge in some cases hence the Krays dying in prison.

you can actually be recalled even without comitting further crime although I'm not sure if this has ever happened

True, it's the threat that is the "life" part though, which is what i was trying to explain.

This is the general misconception mostly down to the wording or reporting.
