I did this blog for work, but have posted in case of interest.

Blog 1

It has to be said that the build up to the trip to Beijing was very quick and we were really excited about our plans.

On arrival in Beijing you are handed a list of do's and don'ts and I was dreading making a mistake, but it is actually much more relaxed than you imagine.

One thing that has struck me since arriving is how you immediately gain the sense of how important these games are to the people of Beijing. This is an opportunity of a lifetime and they plan to make the most of it. They are also really friendly and polite to visitors. Thankfully their English is also much better than my Mandarin.

As you walk up to the Birds nest stadium, you can't help but be impressed at this architecture and everyone was busy clicking away with cameras before entering. I had a sense of feeling like walking up Wembley Way on Cup Final day and couldn't wait for the show to start at 08.08 on 08.08.08. (The number 8 is lucky in China)

It was a complete sell out in the stadium and you it left me with the feeling of realising how lucky we are to have tickets to such a big event. We were also given goodie bags on arrival to our seats with drums, flags and torches. The crowd was an integral part of the celebrations.

We loved the opening ceremony and thought the drummers that got proceedings under way were superb

There was polite applause and flag waving for each of the countries, and a standing ovation and huge cheer when Team GB arrived! You can't help but feel patriotic and want to cheer louder than fans from other countries. Let's hope we win bucket loads of medals in the weeks to come.

It has to be said that the finale to the evening with the lighting of the flame was awesome and there is no doubt that Beijing has done a good job, let the Games begin

Got to bed at 3am and up at 7 so starting to slow up now and must get ready for artistic gymnastics!

Blog 2
Time is really flying by in what has been a really busy schedule.

Day 1 of events was artistic gymnastics followed by Ladies fencing. Although the fencing was good, one semi was USA v USA and the final was USA v USA which wasn't so interesting for the neutrals.

After a late finish it was an early start for beach volleyball, which was something I was really looking forward to. I was impressed by the open air stadium used for this, until it poured with rain!

After this it was a trip to the Great Wall of China and then the sporting highlight of the trip, the men’s Basketball match USA versus China. This was the hottest ticket in town and after watching Croatia beat Australia you could sense the excitement as the Chinese team approached. At this point many fans rushed to the front with their cameras and Security struggled to keep control as did the volunteers who were also busy taking photos.

It may be hard to describe how important the Basketball team is to the Chinese, but it was like Beatlemania as their superstar player Yao Ming arrived. Move over David Beckham and Tiger Woods, Yao Ming is the real star in town. There were also a few VIPs at this game including George W Bush and his father cheering on the US team. The game was off to a great start with Yao Ming scoring the first points and the crowd went wild. Unfortunately it didn't last as USA went on to dominate the game but it was a fantastic evening. Our next event is swimming so we are hoping to see a few Brits in action.

It has been interesting meeting Chinese people at events and several have asked to have their photos taken with us. It feels quite odd as you walk along the street and are approached to pose for a photo. Perhaps they are hoping that we turn out to be someone famous. The locals are also very keen to try out their English. Many will just try small phrases like "Hello, how are you today?" and they are really pleased if they can have a small conversation. They are equally keen to swap pin badges for our special London 2012 badges which are highly sought after!

Beijing is much more westernised than I had imagined, this may be exaggerated by the worldwide sponsors being evident in many places, but I was surprised to see how many western fast food places there were in Beijing.

I have managed to do a bit of shopping along the way and I have found quite a difference between Asian t-shirt sizes and those in the UK. I have tried XL and XXL and realised that my size over here is XXXL, I am hoping this is just down to the size difference and not that I have eaten too many noodles. One word of warning in that what might seem a bargain by UK prices may not quite seem a bargain locally. I managed to haggle a deal for two t-shirts for the price of one, but when I told my tour guide the price I had paid she laughed. It seems that locally I have paid his expenses for a month!

Final Blog
Well time has flown by and we are now back home. I would like to give a quick mention to Terminal 5 for the excellent set up and speedy service. It must be the first time that my suitcase has reached baggage reclaim before me. Thankfully they seem to have overcome their initial problems when it opened.
I must admit that I felt a little sad to have to leave Beijing, with so much more to see and do, but we will definitely return to Beijing one day to take in all the sites. As for the Olympics, I will now be an armchair viewer following Team GB and good to see we have already had some more medal success. Highlights of the trip included the chance to watch sports live that I would never have usually thought about such as the gymnastics or basketball. I am still ignorant on the finer points and rules of these sports, but I am now keen to learn more. I also went to see the Beach Volleyball and despite the torrential rain the games continued and was a lot of fun.
For our last event we went to the aquatics centre for some swimming heats and were lucky enough to see Michael Phelps in action. He really made it look so easy and has gone on to win several Golds. He will be remembered in years to come as a sporting great and hard to see someone winning so many medals like this in the future. However, with Phelps from the USA and previously Ian Thorpe from Australia, lets hope it is our turn next to have a swimming legend.
I have watched a tv recording of some of the opening ceremony and interesting to compare to the live event. There was so much happening on the night that it was hard to take it all in. Looking back it is hard to imagine the amount of time and effort in planning such a spectacle.
Overall, I thought the sports facilities were superb and events were well planned. There are lessons to be learned for any future hosts of such major events, one was that I found that the queues for food and merchandise on the opening night were too long. There also needed to be better communication regarding restrictions to access tourist sites during the games.  However, based on the Games so far I believe that Beijing will be regarded as a success.
I had an unforgettable time in Beijing and once the Games are over the countdown to 2012 can begin and I can't wait!

If I was doing a Blonde blog I would have done it a bit more warts and all. But getting online wasn't easy while over there, very slow and very expensive (in the hotel anyway). Main downside of the trip was at the opening ceremony they took water off you at the first security barrier and then it took 2 hours to get through the next one. Bearing in mind the sweltering heat this was horrible. All the while our meal that was waiting for us was rotting away and was eventually chucked (or reheated for another day). As we had no food we then had to queue for ages for a hot dog, I gave up and tried at about ten when it was a bit quieter, but even then it was a 20 minute queue for a beer. Bearing in mind that the section we were in was full of vip's such as John Howard the ex Aussie PM, this wasn't good and wasn't a night to get drunk.
I did make one complaint to our chinese tour guide about our schedule. She was very concerned and asked what the problem was and I explained that our schedule was too tight for any romance and I needed my lady love!!  Cheesy
Anyway that's my trip, and I am now off this afternoon to France for the weekend for a well earned break.  Wink
