Why would you ever open fold Ah from the Small Blind four handed?

You did exactly the right thing. As did your opponent. Just one of those things...

Cos of the unique structure I suppose. I could try and fold my way to another shot at step 4 perhaps and then get aggressive?

4 handed with the prize structure the way it is - I would do the same as you did every single time.  It's just unlucky, that's all there is.  If you want to mess about and try and scrape another shot at step 4 then you can fold, but who's to say you'll find a better spot.  You want to be coming 1st or 2nd in this, and you're not gonna do that without getting busy.

Serious? I mean you could also put on a dress and go and pick flowers in the woods, but why would you do that? Folding this hand bvb so you can hopefully get back to the same place again is nothing short of ridic as well you know. You don't climb steps by treading water.

Standard shove, the bb would have to be calling over 50% of hands for this to be -ev.

Im pushing quite wide in this spot, as the shortie isn't really that short at all. If he had 3bbs i would tighten up my shoving range but would still shove a8s.
