Hi mate, e4 is pretty much what I play anyway. I either play the scotch opening, ruy lopez or max lange attack (instead of 3. Bb5 it's 3. Bc4 attacking f7). As black I play French defence or the Sicilian. But when someone plays c4 or some quirky opening I get a little stuck. So at least if I know what I'm against I can try to take them off course. I know the things such as double attacks, forks, windmills, pins etc.

Do you play any gambits? I like Danish gambit on e4.

I have been reading up a little on openings, I've played a few Blitz games and am finding myself in a much stronger position in the middle game for my 'work'.  I really struggle when playing as Black though, does anybody have any advice on good/simple black defence as i've tried a few such as the Sicilian and always seem to end up in a mess!

Obviously i'm pretty green when it comes to chess but if anybody could provide a few pointers that would be great.

keeping it simple with e5 in reply leads to some open attacking lines for both sides and good fun blitz games.

I never play the Ruy Lopez (the most common e4, e5 opening).

White I play d4.
Black I play c5.
