Probably the best book I've read so far is Harrington on Hold-Em.

Personally, I really enjoyed Greenstein's Ace On The River. If you're looking for something a little bit different, then that may be the one for you.

Other books that spring to mind are Super System, Theory of Poker, & Book of Tells. I'd recommend all three.

Could you tell us a little more about your experience level and what games you are planning to play?

Most books are targetted towards a specific format or game, so its difficult to recommend one without knowing what games you are interested in.

Of the books mentioned so far Harrington on Hold'em is the only one I'd consider recommending as a first poker book, and only if you're interested in playing No Limit Hold'em cash games or tournaments.  This assumes you have some playing experience behind you.

Of the other books Snoopy mentioned, I have reservations (for different reasons) about recommending any of them as your first purchase, although some of them are 'must read' titles at a later stage.  If you can give me some background info I can give you a few alternative choices.

Yes, soz, my mistake. I forgot that you were first timer to books.

The three are recommended at the end of my post are more suited to more experienced players, especially Theory of Poker which can become quite complex and mathematical at times.

However, I see no reason why a newbie can't give the other two a go.

The first book I ever read was Cloutier/McEvoy's book on Tournament poker. And I turned out all right!
