Origin of the Phrase "To Grim"?

I always thought grimming was named after the high stakes hu player Grimstar who used to agree to flips for large amounts of money but folded if he didnt like his hand.
But tonight I was talking to someone who said the phrase was already in crculation and Grimstar called himself that as a sick joke..
Anyone know?
