Can anyone give me advice on playing rebuys. I was in a tournament last night and as soon as rebuys finished I was fine and played my normal game. However in the rebuy period I just struggled to know what to do. I was getting callers where not expected and it cost me twice where I was hit with bad beats on the river.
Should I play tight and wait for the 90 minutes to be up, or play more aggressive? I found that when I slowed down and played less hands that some of the others were pulling away. This made me go all in a few times and again got busted.
Any tips?

Have played a lot of small rebuy comps

Firstly you have to assess the make up of your table pretty quick....are they aggressive types? newbies? rocks?

One of the adages I worth following if you are unsure of yourself in these is if the table is loose play tight and vice versa

That said, things will also depend on your budget relative to the rest of the table.

In the first level of a two level rebuy I will try and see a lot of cheap flops and then play them hard if I connect. Simply relying on premium cards will see you at a disadvantage because a) they don't come around that often and b) the likelihood is that you will see multiple callers and the hands often get cracked

Once you get to the second level if you still do not have chips there comes a point that by rebuying you are simply fattening up the prize pool for others. If it ain't happening, get up and try again another night.

For example if you are buying 1000 chips for say £10 and you have already spent £50, and the table average is 8,000 chips then two things happen. Firstly even if you double up you are not really in contention and secondly the big stacks are going to take you on with allsorts. So the "utility" of your later rebuys is far lower than going for it early and trying to get chips

Several players I know get round this problem thus. They allocate say a sum of money to go all in regardless for the first 5-7 hands and stop this only when they have won a pot and given them enough chips to play proper poker.

My way is to see virtually every flop for the first fifteen minutes. After then if I have no chips I am reigning back a bit for budgetary purposes but still looking to gamble. The quicker you get chips the cheaper it ultimately is. I am not afraid to get up way before the end of the rebuy period if its not working. Swallow your rpide, there's always another night.

Once you reach the end of the rebuys if you can revert to your proper game then it gets a lot easier, table make up dependent, because often others will not do so

seconded.

Great advice tightend, thats pretty much my exact re buy strategy. great minds. You are very right about that last re buy, usually worthless so don't bother.

People moan about the crazy re buyer's going all in every hand but these people are fattening the prize pool and making your table awash with chips which gives you a distinct advantage over players sat on tight tables. Embrace the maniac.

byron's a rebel at heart.

my advice is better though, played far too many little rebuy comps to be classed as anything other than insane!

I know this may come as a shock......

I play the rebuys pretty damn tight (well for me anyway) you can't run people of pots so i just try and get the best hand paid off!
